The strategies of private higher educational institutions during the Covid-19 pandemic. A review of literature

This paper sought a qualitative/quantitative bibliometric approach, using the literature review, to present the main strategies with a bias toward sustainability, used by private Higher Education Institutions, in an attempt to neutralize the effects of the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. To meet the reliability requirements of the source of the papers used, a search was made in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, where 47 papers were selected. As a result, there was a scattering of strategic actions in several works. However, no actions were identified that orientated to deliberate planning, as a way of confrontation with the new environment that was quickly established, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, we found fragmented or emerging strategic actions, mostly concentrated on Teaching activities as a possible response, given the circumstances, to a situation that presented itself as an emergency. This study divides the actions identified in the strategic areas of the Institutions into Teaching, Research, Extension, Business Management, and Teacher Training. © 2023

Ship recycling at the end of its useful life presents significant environmental and health challenges due to the presence of hazardous materials, such as asbestos and synthetic vitreous fibers (SVFs). This study aimed to convert SVFs and asbestos into safe, reusable co-products by incorporating them into a glassy matrix. The materials were melted at 1200 °C for 1 h with utilization of niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) to lower fusion temperatures. Samples collected from an offshore vessel and platform being recycled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the presence of SVFs but not asbestos. Seven types of glass were produced, with their non-crystalline, glassy nature confirmed by the presence of an amorphous halo in X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a glass transition observed in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These findings demonstrate the potential to transform hazardous waste into value-added products, advancing a circular economy in ship recycling operations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

This study investigates barriers to adopting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in road freight transportation, a sector where operational efficiency is crucial. A mixed-method approach comprising a Systematic Literature Review, the Fuzzy Delphi Method, and the Best and Worst Method was employed to evaluate these barriers. Five main obstacles were identified: lack of top management and investor support, resistance to change, absence of economic and political incentives, uncertainties regarding return on investment, and high technology investment costs. The most significant barrier was the lack of top management support, which influenced investment and strategic decisions. Theoretically, the research enhances understanding of technology adoption barriers in road freight transportation, providing insights for future academic and practical applications. From a managerial point of view, this study offers insights to improve ICT adoption strategies, thereby boosting sector efficiency and competitiveness.

Overcrowded public emergency services are global issues and their serious healthcare problems are widely discussed in literature. Therefore, there are high rates of morbidity and mortality due to lack of specialized care, especially regarding low-acuity patients identified as those responsible for overcrowded services in scientific literature. Thus, a Lean Healthcare approach was developed in order to understand Fast Track applications in Emergency Care Units (UPA 24H) through a descriptive qualitative research using a statistical data analysis software called IRAMUTEQ, which processes data obtained from technical reports prepared during the Lean Project at 24-Hour UPA..

The efficiency levels at which companies turn inputs into outputs may increase their competitive capacity. Nevertheless, in the literature, there is a lack of methods allowing evaluation of the performance of operations in production systems that take into account all of their components. The objective of this study is to present an analysis of efficiency for a production system using DEA and OEE in an integrated manner (DEA/OEE). To achieve this objective, we conducted a case study of a bus manufacturer and a comparative analysis using the results obtained by DEA/OEE compared with the results of the OEE measured in an operation of the company studied. The efficiency measured by DEA/OEE presents differences in relation to OEE results. The analysis of the causes of such differences pointed out that action taken to improve the OEE indicator decreased the efficiency of the operation analyzed. This study evidences that decision-making focused on improving OEE on its own may lead to an increase in the consumption of resources during an operation. Such an increase does not necessarily increase production levels and may reduce technical efficiency. © 2020, Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management.

This article aims to analyze contributions and applications of Queuing Theory (QT) in solving health service management problems. A literature bibliometric review was carried out to present a chronological classification of health care systems examined with the aid of queuing models with the purpose of describing the main trends in QT application to assist decision makers in health services. Methodology: A bibliometric review was carried out to investigate the area of health supported by queuing models. Articles describing models of problems were sought and their topics or keywords related to QT and health care or health problems of the population. Results: 314 articles addressing the applications of QT in Health Care Management (HCM) from 2014 and 2020 were analyzed. Conclusion: It was found that QT contributes to improve health services and provides managers with resources to achieve such improvement. It was also evidenced that it is widely applied in emergency services.

Additive manufacturing is one of the pillars of Industry 4.0 and has been revolutionizing the global market through highly technological and groundbreaking products. One example is the use of additive manufacturing (AM) applied to the construction industry through 3D printing (3DP), which allows greater freedom in the development of new projects, with the use of more complex concrete geometric shapes, greater quality control., and less wasted material. The objective of this paper was to analyze how additive manufacturing, with the help of 3D printing, can help the evolution of civil construction. For this, a systematic literature review of articles published in journals between the years 2015 and 2021 was performed. After the final extraction, a total of 24 articles from 15 countries were identified. It was noticed that even in the face of all the potentials of 3D printing technology for civil construction, its development must be advanced in the coming years, especially in emerging countries like Brazil.

Lignocellulosic agricultural wastes, such as banana trunks, are known to have the potential to be converted into bioethanol. This study aimed to investigate the potassium hydroxide microwave-assisted pretreatment (PhMa) of the banana trunk (Musa paradisiaca) and Simultaneous Saccharification Fermentation (SSF) to produce bioethanol. The study procedures were performed with varying temperatures (55–95 °C) and durations (10–50 min). PhMa was conducted with microwave irradiation at 360 Hz. The SSF process was carried out at 30–40 °C for 4–96 h. The lowest lignin content was approximately 6.84 % at 95 °C for 50 min. The highest bioethanol yield was at 5 % (v/v) during 72 h of fermentation at 30 and 40 °C. PhMa pretreatment method enabled the determination of kinetic parameters by fitting a model to various experimental data. A first-order reaction kinetic was used to calculate the activation energy. The findings indicated the activation energy 19.67 kJ mol⁻¹. © 2025 The Authors

Flexibility in the Brazilian Industry 4.0: Challenges and Opportunities

The aim of this study is to analyze the results of a research carried out in Brazilian manufacturing companies that have typical initiatives of Industry 4.0, in order to identify the main challenges and opportunities of building a flexible industry and to provide elements that enable manufacturers to guide this construction with a little more security. Through the literature review, 28 challenges and 23 opportunities were identified and submitted by a questionnaire to 39 leaders of national and multinational manufacturing companies in Brazil, identifying which challenges and opportunities were the most and the least important. This study brings two theoretical contributions: it enriches the literature on challenges and opportunities of flexibility and draws attention to issues on the implementation of a flexible industry that needs studies. The management contributions are: (1) show the relative importance of 28 challenges and 23 opportunities and (2) detail the content of 24 questions (the 6 most and the 6 least relevant challenges and opportunities) in order to give certain security to the manufacturers to guide the building of the flexible industry and direct implementation actions. The limitations of this study are the reduced number of companies and segments of economy observed (Auto Parts, Metal-mechanics and Metallurgy) for an empirical study and the opinions of leaders in a moment, which may change, not allowing generalizations. © 2020, Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management.

This paper aimed to develop a model to estimate the generation of electrical energy through human muscular effort, using a generator bicycle, connected to the electrical grid. The motivation resulted from the author's experience in distributed electrical energy generation, which identified a difficulty in installing photovoltaic solar generation systems on the top of buildings. As a research methodology, this study used multiple linear regression using time, weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) as independent variables. The model showed promising results, presenting a high adjusted R-squared, respecting the assumptions associated with a linear regression model. The simulations based on the model showed a considerable energy generation potential for Brazil. In conclusion, although the estimated regression model presented a high predictive capability, further studies are recommended before any financial investment. © 2022, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ).
