Additive manufacturing is one of the pillars of Industry 4.0 and has been revolutionizing the global market through highly technological and groundbreaking products. One example is the use of additive manufacturing (AM) applied to the construction industry through 3D printing (3DP), which allows greater freedom in the development of new projects, with the use of more complex concrete geometric shapes, greater quality control., and less wasted material. The objective of this paper was to analyze how additive manufacturing, with the help of 3D printing, can help the evolution of civil construction. For this, a systematic literature review of articles published in journals between the years 2015 and 2021 was performed. After the final extraction, a total of 24 articles from 15 countries were identified. It was noticed that even in the face of all the potentials of 3D printing technology for civil construction, its development must be advanced in the coming years, especially in emerging countries like Brazil.

Lignocellulosic agricultural wastes, such as banana trunks, are known to have the potential to be converted into bioethanol. This study aimed to investigate the potassium hydroxide microwave-assisted pretreatment (PhMa) of the banana trunk (Musa paradisiaca) and Simultaneous Saccharification Fermentation (SSF) to produce bioethanol. The study procedures were performed with varying temperatures (55–95 °C) and durations (10–50 min). PhMa was conducted with microwave irradiation at 360 Hz. The SSF process was carried out at 30–40 °C for 4–96 h. The lowest lignin content was approximately 6.84 % at 95 °C for 50 min. The highest bioethanol yield was at 5 % (v/v) during 72 h of fermentation at 30 and 40 °C. PhMa pretreatment method enabled the determination of kinetic parameters by fitting a model to various experimental data. A first-order reaction kinetic was used to calculate the activation energy. The findings indicated the activation energy 19.67 kJ mol⁻¹. © 2025 The Authors

Flexibility in the Brazilian Industry 4.0: Challenges and Opportunities

The aim of this study is to analyze the results of a research carried out in Brazilian manufacturing companies that have typical initiatives of Industry 4.0, in order to identify the main challenges and opportunities of building a flexible industry and to provide elements that enable manufacturers to guide this construction with a little more security. Through the literature review, 28 challenges and 23 opportunities were identified and submitted by a questionnaire to 39 leaders of national and multinational manufacturing companies in Brazil, identifying which challenges and opportunities were the most and the least important. This study brings two theoretical contributions: it enriches the literature on challenges and opportunities of flexibility and draws attention to issues on the implementation of a flexible industry that needs studies. The management contributions are: (1) show the relative importance of 28 challenges and 23 opportunities and (2) detail the content of 24 questions (the 6 most and the 6 least relevant challenges and opportunities) in order to give certain security to the manufacturers to guide the building of the flexible industry and direct implementation actions. The limitations of this study are the reduced number of companies and segments of economy observed (Auto Parts, Metal-mechanics and Metallurgy) for an empirical study and the opinions of leaders in a moment, which may change, not allowing generalizations. © 2020, Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management.

The paraconsistent annotated evidential logic E τ has been studied based on one of the applications of Paraconsistent Annotated Logic. We propose an enhanced logical system T4E τ, an extended version of evidential annotated logics E τ, by adopting rough set theory for a semantic interpretation of truth-value and constructing another deductive system using tableau calculus adding some operations MAX and MIN. Transfer learning for COVID-19 predictive modeling: A multicenter study of 12 hospitals

PURPOSE:To use transfer learning to predict Intensive Care Unit admission (ICU) for COVID-19 patients in a multicenter setting. METHODS:We trained XGBoost algorithms using demographic and laboratory predictors recorded during hospital admissions across 12 hospitals. Our goal was to identify the best-performing hospital and evaluate its generalization capacity through external validation in the other 11 hospitals. Additionally, this best-performing hospital served as the source domain for transfer learning and was fine-tuned by incorporating new decision trees trained with local data from each of the remaining hospitals. RESULTS:We observed considerable variation in ICU admission outcomes across the 12 hospitals, with local predictive performance (AUC - area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) ranging from 0.6239 to 0.9410. The best-performing model's generalization capacity, evaluated through external validation, resulted in an AUC below 0.7 in 6 hospitals. By applying transfer learning and fine-tuning this best-performing model, we found that its performance stabilized after incorporating 20 new trees trained with data from the target hospitals. This adjustment improved AUC in 9 out of the 11 hospitals, compared to the results from the external validation. CONCLUSIONS:The study showed that transfer learning effectively leverages knowledge from the best-performing hospital to initialize and accelerate model training in other hospitals with lower performance or limited sample sizes, thereby enhancing overall adaptability and efficiency.

Electromobility (EM) has emerged as a promising solution to achieve carbon neutrality goals by replacing traditional fossil fuel-powered transportation with electric vehicles (EVs). This sustainable transportation option significantly reduces energy consumption and eliminates greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to mitigating climate change and improving air quality. While some countries have implemented strategies to promote EM adoption, emerging economies like Brazil face complex challenges. This research employs Q-methodology to explore the viewpoints and opinions of Brazilian specialists in the field of EM, identifying challenges and opportunities for successful adoption. The study also examines the broader implications for emerging countries and their automotive industries. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing EV costs, propulsion technologies, and the need for government incentives and policies. Additionally, the research highlights the role of education and urban mobility in promoting EM. While the study offers valuable insights, it acknowledges limitations in the sample and suggests future research directions. © 2024 The Authors

Almost all farmers are unaware that rice straw and paunch manure are potential feedstocks for bioethanol besides organic fertilizer, biochar, and biogas. Farmers' perceptions regarding the multiattributes of bioethanol development are still underestimated, indicating that farmers are still indecisive about the potential use of rice straw and paunch manure as feedstock for bioethanol. They still need extension and training to improve their knowledge. The Location Quotient (LQ) value of rice straw and cattle paunch manure is > 1, indicating that Karanganyar Regency could become a base for bioethanol development from rice straw and cattle paunch manure. © 2024 The Authors

Decision support framework for evaluating alternatives for decommissioning offshore oil and gas structures

The process of decommissioning fixed offshore platforms involves several decision-making processes and various stakeholders with conflicting objectives. Among these decisions is the choice of the best alternative for decommissioning, taking into account costs, environmental and social impact, safety and technical factors. The literature has not found any application of a multi-criteria model for choosing the decommissioning alternative for fixed offshore oil and gas platforms, simultaneously considering the five criteria required by legislation. The aim of this article is to propose a decision support framework for the evaluation of decommissioning alternatives for fixed offshore oil and gas platforms, considering the criteria for meeting stakeholder and international regulatory requirements. To develop the model, a literature review of the relevant criteria for decision-making was done, and these criteria were refined by 5 experts from different institutions with experience in decommissioning fixed offshore platforms, in the environmental, social, economic, technical and occupational safety areas. Five criteria, 25 sub-criteria and 63 factors were selected. The model follows a mathematical logic with the application of the ELECTRE III multi-criteria method. Adaptations were made because it was necessary to structure it for a single decision-maker, since the environmental specialist does not have the know-how to evaluate economic criteria, for example. Four scenarios were created to rank the decommissioning alternatives, considering variations in weights, thresholds and the inclusion of a veto. The model was applied to a real example, showing its viability and applicability. In all scenarios, the leave-in-place alternative was the best-ranked, with partial removal coming in second. The complete removal alternative was the worst ranked in almost all scenarios.

Socio-biodiversity supply chain: Sustainable practices of a Brazilian cosmetic company

The purpose of this article is to analyze and describe sustainable practices based on biodiversity assets adopted by one of the largest global cosmetics company, located in Brazil. The company occupies the 19th position of the Global Ranking 100 Sustainability. The research method is bibliographic research that employed open, non-classified documents publicized by the company. The main findings of the study underscore the relevance of the rural communities in developing a supply chain based on biodiversity as well as the importance of the relationships among the tiers to implement a sustainable business model. The company relies on high-quality products associated with environmental development. Currently, biodiversity suppliers account for 80% circa of natural raw materials, the so-called biodiversity asset, which represents the core of the sustainable business model of the company. The findings can be generalized by helping other supply chains to develop and implement sustainable business models supported by biodiversity. Such type of a model can help companies achieve expressive business performance and, at the same time, social relevance to peripheral or vulnerable rural communities. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC

The objective of this study was twofold: first, to investigate how fermentation treatments influence the volatile composition across different cocoa fractions, from beans to chocolate;and second, to apply and demonstrate the use of the ComDim method for analyzing multi-block datasets generated by the same analytical technique. While principal component analysis was used to provide insights into individual datasets, ComDim revealed complementary information across all data tables, enhancing data interpretation. Cocoa pulp reduction and inclusion of malt residue and banana peel partially affected the volatile composition of cocoa beans, nibs, liquor, and chocolate. The results indicated that cocoa beans and nibs were more affected by fermentation treatments than liquor and chocolate. This study not only advances the understanding of cocoa volatile chemistry but also highlights the potential of circular economy practices by incorporating valuable co-products into cocoa fermentation, thereby enhancing sustainability and adding value throughout the cocoa supply chain. © 2024
