Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides commonly used in agriculture and homes due to their low toxicity to mammals and effectiveness at low doses. However, exposure to pyrethroids can cause various symptoms, depending on the route of exposure. To measure human exposure to pyrethroids, researchers used wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) with polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) sampling. This approach is a cost-effective and efficient way to assess exposure to pyrethroids. The study aimed to evaluate the exposure of an urban population in Brazil to pyrethroids during the COVID-19 pandemic using WBE with POCIS sampling. Researchers analyzed 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) in wastewater using passive sampling with POCIS, which was extracted with methanol and analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. The range of CTWA concentrations of 3-PBA in wastewater was 24.3–298.2 ng L−1, with a mean value of 134 ± 76.5 ng L−1. The values were used to estimate the exposure of the population to pyrethroid insecticides. Three different conversion factors were applied to determine the range of exposure to at least 20 different pyrethroid insecticides. The exposure values ranged from 18.08 to 1441.49 mg day−1 per 1000 inhabitants. The toxicological risk posed to the exposed population was evaluated by calculating the WBE toxicological level (WBE-TL). Lambda-cyhalothrin was used as a reference for risk assessment, and the WBE-TL values for lambda-cyhalothrin ranged from 0.5 to 8.29 (considering the high CF). We compared mobility trends to 3-PBA exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study highlighted the effectiveness of POCIS sampling in WBE and provided useful information for policymakers and regulatory agencies. This bibliometric study examines publications spanning from 1995 to 2023 on biobased materials for food-packaging (BMFP), often proposed as alternatives to petroleum-based on FP. The number of articles related to this topic exhibited an annual growth rate (AGR) of 105.7% from 2019 to 2023 compared to 1995 to 2018, indicating a growing interest in this field over the past 28 years, with 2082 articles published in high-impact journals. Notably, countries such as China, India, and Brazil demonstrate significant scientific output per capita, with influential groups based in institutions from Malaysia and Spain (Universiti Putra Malaysia, IATA, and CSIC). Among over 4,000 key-words, those with high co-occurrence were analyzed to identify crucial research areas and current knowledge gaps. Using the SC database, 1,233 articles from 2019 to 2023 were selected to explore the research landscape and key areas of interest within BMFP. Temporal keyword analysis revealed emerging themes, including active food packaging (AFP) and its antimicrobial capabilities, nanotechnology and composites in FP, biodegradability and edible-films, biopolymers for food-packaging, and pectin-based active packaging materials. Thus, eco-friendly food packaging solutions based on nanoparticles and polysaccharides show prospects for development or contribution to advancements. Consequently, the use of AFP demonstrates a prosperous trend for the food packaging-industry in the future. © 2025 The Author(s)

Efficiency comparison of proactive approaches to deal with machine failures*

Due to the innovations brought by Industry 4.0, decision-makers must rethink the premisses and methods used to solve production planning problems. We study short-term production planning and scheduling problems subject to disruptions, incorporating characteristics of Industry 4.0 into the analyzed scenario. We propose and compare two proactive approaches for dealing with machine failures on the shop floor. The methods aim to find sequences with low probabilities of infeasibility at the scheduling level even with the occurrence of disruptions. One proactive approach performs simulations before the resolution of the planning problems to define slacks added to the capacity constraints of the short-term production planning problem. On the other hand, the second approach determines these slacks based on the probability distributions of the failures. According to the experiments, we conclude that the proposed approaches find similar results for most instance sets when comparing the averages and standard deviations. The results indicate that is not necessary to perform simulations before the resolution of the planning problems; a quick analysis of the probability distributions could be used by the decision-maker.

The aviation industry has a significant impact on the environment, accounting for 13% of global fossil fuel consumption and 2% of annual CO 2 emissions. One of the factors that increase this consumption is engine degradation due to the accumulation of dirt on compressor blades. To mitigate this effect and restore efficiency, compressor washing is essential, but it requires high water consumption. This study analyzes the operational, economic, and environmental benefits of optimizing this process, based on the Blue Economy. Fuel efficiency was assessed using the Fuel/RTM indicator, financial viability using ROI, and environmental impacts using the MIF index. The results indicate a 1.8% gain in fuel efficiency, annual savings of $179,000, a 6.9% reduction in environmental impact, and a 50% drop in water use. The findings demonstrate that sustainable maintenance practices generate economic and environmental gains, contributing to the conservation of water resources in aviation.

Fuzzy Rule Based Classification Systems (FRBCSs) are widely used tools in classification problems. An important aspect in the design of a FRBCS is the number of fuzzy labels per variable (granularity level), which significantly influences the performance of the fuzzy system. Another relevant issue to be considered when generating a FRBCS is the accuracy-interpretability tradeoff, which can be addressed in the context of multi-objective optimization. Thus, in this work, we propose a new approach to design a FRBCS in which the accuracy and the interpretability (number of rules) of the FRBCS are considered objectives to be treated with the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Inspired by the backbone architecture of wired networks, in this study, we applied the concept of a virtual backbone to the routing scheme in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) to develop an effective routing method. Using connected dominating set (CDS)-based methods to construct a virtual backbone network can effectively improve routing performance in a MANET. The CDS virtual backbone network we developed in the present study can respond quickly and identify routing paths through these CDS members as the network topology changes. Meanwhile, the nodes that are not CDS members can enter the power-saving mode to minimize unnecessary power consumption. Wireless nodes in a MANET can move freely within the network;therefore, CDS virtual backbones are easy to deconstruct. Researchers have developed centralized and decentralized CDS algorithms to reconstruct network topologies. When previously developed centralized CDS algorithms are applied, the system requires the information of all nodes in the network to reconstruct the virtual backbone. Therefore, the information exchange costs of such algorithms before refactoring are high. By contrast, decentralized CDS algorithms can use local information to reconstruct virtual backbones quickly. Yet, decentralized algorithms produce larger CDSs than centralized algorithms. To improve upon the performance of previously developed decentralized algorithms, we developed and herein present a new decentralized CDS algorithm called APP-CDS that can quickly construct a virtual backbone with the smallest possible CDS for use in MANET environments. © 2023, The Authors. Business models and investors should understand the meaning of ‘value’ from a different perspective if the ultimate goal is to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs). New business strategies for pursuing the SDGs and the aptitude to set up cleaner and more collaborative production systems must replace the traditional approaches tied to a value perception that is not coherent with the actual sustainability performance of companies. This outdated but still largely used value perception is often vague, abstract, and lacks more objective models and indicators to avoid misleading choices of investments in companies with low levels of sustainability. Using a mining company in Brazil as an example, this commentary letter aims to provide insights about the need for information rooted in science, considering biophysical perspectives under a systemic approach to fully understand the meaning of value behind companies' performance and support investments in those more sustainable ones. Parameters to quantitatively assess companies' sustainability are presented to start the discussions about how investors can make better choices when putting their money on those really more sustainable companies that, besides returning profits, will support the achievement of SDGs. © 2022 The Authors

This work focuses mainly on wind energy usage as a renewable source for energy generation in urban environments, where the variability of air current flow is a challenge. One of the main objectives to be achieved in this study is to develop small vertical wind turbines. Design thinking methodology was used to innovative ideas development using the application of concepts from rapid prototyping (additive manufacturing). As a target object to idealize an innovative product, was the providing of a mobile equipment recharging system, using the air current generated by the urban public transport vehicles. As a result, a modular system of small power generation was produced, tested, and validated. The mini-turbine with the best performance in power generation in wind flows lower than 4 m/s was the VAWT, which achieved the smallest difference, 18 % greater. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the installation of small wind turbines in an urbanized area requires a minimum of wind measurements at the exact location to validate the innovative design. © 2024 The Authors

This study examines Brazil's soybean trade through the dual lens of economic and environmental considerations, employing emergy synthesis to reveal hidden resource dependencies and costs within production and export processes. It bridges ecological modeling and sustainability science by analyzing Brazil's soybean trade through the interplay of economic and environmental dimensions. By applying emergy-based indices—such as the Emergy Exchange Ratio, Emergy Benefit Ratio, and Opportunity Ratio - the analysis offers a nuanced understanding of trade dynamics between 2015 and 2019, particularly with partners like China and Europe. The trade with China showed an average EER of 0.27, meaning that for every unit of emergy value Brazil exported in raw soybeans, it received substantially more emergy in currency terms. In comparison, trade with European partners, such as Spain and The Netherlands, with EE>1, was notably unfavorable for Brazil. The Opportunity Ratio is another key metric to indicate the potential economic gains from processing raw soybean commodities domestically. The analysis revealed that, on average, domestic processing could potentially lead to a GDP increase of 17 % from the soybean sector. Highlighting the environmental implications of reliance on non-renewable inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, the study underscores the potential benefits of domestic soybean processing for enhancing GDP, reducing import dependency, and fostering equitable resource use. The research provides insights into sustainability through carefully integrating economic and ecological perspectives, informing strategies for addressing environmental costs while fostering balanced global trade practices.

The role of online platforms to enable the process of industrial symbiosis: An analysis of tools available in the market

The Circular Economy is driven by sustainable strategies of management and the reuse of materials and power to try to decrease the demand of resources and minimize the environmental impacts. Aligned to said perspective, the Industrial Symbiosis (IS) is opposite to the linear production's logic, enabling the sharing of resources, waste, and by-products, that is, the circular flow of power, water, materials, and information. In the last few years, to improve these IS strategies, platforms and tools were created to intermediate this process and facilitate the match between those who demand and offer waste and resources, such as the online waste markets or e-marketplaces. From this perspective, the objective of this study is to evaluate how these tools contributed to the IS process, going beyond the problem of the local factor. For this purpose, ten online platforms, found in the literature, were selected. The analysis was made based on the identification of key elements, which enabled the creation of a list with different types of traded materials, sectors and areas served, how wide was the service, the year when the activities started and, ultimately, the business model adopted. As a result, the evaluation shows that these tools enhance the symbiosis process because they approach the parties and facilitate the identification of synergies. Generally, the use of online platforms widens the geographic scope of the IS processes, enabling the interaction of parties from different places and regions. Was observed that these tools are characterized by the use of intelligent systems, based on algorithms that identify and recommend relations, providing greater assertiveness and speed to the decision-making process. Among the research's findings, we must stress that the IS potential extends much beyond the reuse of waste. There are opportunities for other synergies, such as infrastructure and service sharing.
