In low-fertility tropical agroecosystems, intercropping with perennial legumes has the potential to maximize biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and improve non-legume nitrogen (N) uptake and yields. However, the microbial interactions that facilitate the beneficial effects of intercropping in perennial systems remain largely uncharacterized, particularly in the tropics. In this study, we explored the contribution of root-associated bacteria and fungi to N content and the nutritional characteristics of perennial grasses (Cenchrus purpureus and Brachiaria cv. Mulato II) and an annual cereal (Zea mays) intercropped with a perennial legume (Desmodium sp). Sampling approximately every 8 weeks at the time of forage grass anthesis, we collected biomass leaf tissue, bulk soil, and rhizosphere soil. We calculated nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa) in Desmodium leaf tissue to estimate BNF and found that Ndfa increased in intercropping arrangements relative to single-cropped Desmodium by 91.6 - 147.1% on average in intercropped stands with Brachiaria and C. purpureus. Intercropping also induced positive changes in non-legume tissue quality in a species- and site-dependent manner. Furthermore, we identified microbial taxa that were significantly enriched in the rhizosphere of intercropped plants relative to monocropped plants and which correlated to multiple forage nutritive quality metrics. Fungal community structure responded more strongly to the presence of a legume intercrop than bacterial communities. We also identified species-specific trends in the degree to which monocropped and intercropped rhizosphere communities differed. Overall, this study suggests that perennial legume intercropping may recruit beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms in rainfed tropical soils to facilitate nutritional benefits in the non-legume companion crop and highlights the complexity of rhizospheric microbial interactions in intercropped systems. © 2023, The Authors. Introduction The absence of an upper limb, either due to amputation or to congenital malformation, can impair the quality of life, interfering with their ability to perform daily activities and working routine, generating physical and psychological impacts. Thus, the rehabilitation process improves the person's functionality, developing skills, and promoting independence and social participation which are the priority issue. In this sense, the prosthesis plays an important role, as it is a therapeutic technological resource capable of expanding the functional capabilities of the person amputated. Objectives Currently, the orthopedic workshops certificated by the Brazilian Unified Health System (BUHS) are responsible for providing the demands of orthoses and prostheses to insured patients. Normally, these equipment are manufactured by a handmade process, which can initially cause discomfort to the patient that induces adjustment and consequently to substantial increases in the production time. In addition, BUHS provides to the insured patients only standard basic models type prostheses, therefore, it is not offered the chance to make use of the benefits of a robotic prosthesis. Thus, implementing other manufacturing methodologies capable of providing a faster and better adaptable prosthesis to the patient is necessary because this behavior can decrease the discomfort and enable other prosthetic options. In this sense, the development of personalized products using 3D scanning and rapid prototyping techniques appears as essential alternatives. In this manner, a novel model of the prosthesis with automatic movement which has the potential to be included as a viable alternative to be provided by the BUHS is socially important. The cloning of disease resistance genes in wheat has been disproportionately slow, tedious and costly because of the large and complex genome. Wheat gene cloning projects in the late 1990s and early 2000s were multi-year endeavors, often spanning a decade or longer. The development of genomics-assisted gene cloning tools and speed breeding have significantly accelerated gene cloning in wheat over the past years. Here, we present an optimized high-throughput disease resistance gene cloning workflow that allows to identify causal genes in less than six months. As a proof-of-principle, we clone the stem rust resistance gene Sr6, which has been a historically relevant source of resistance to confine a major stem rust outbreak in North America in the mid-20 century. Sr6 encodes a CC-BED-domain-containing nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) immune receptor. The workflow provides a basis to tackle the systematic cloning of all the genetically described disease resistance genes by the wheat community, which will facilitate knowledge-guided deployment of resistance genes in wheat breeding.

To gain insight into the active microbiota during spontaneous fermentation of Theobroma cacao L., this study assessed protein diversity during 120 h using a combined metabarconding and metaproteomics approach. During the first days of fermentation, most of the peptides were associated with T. cacao and yeast (0–72 h). Peptides associated with bacteria became more abundant after 72 h of fermentation, coinciding with a decrease in peptides associated with cocoa (96–120 h). In addition to the known microorganisms involved in fermentation, such as Saccharomyces, Lactobacillus and Acetobacter, novel genera were also metabolically active, including Microvirga, Inquilinus, Candolleomyces and Lasiodiplodia. The results showed a consistency in the main genera detected by both techniques, but the identification of unexplored genera such as Inquilinus, Microvirga, Cyphellophora and Ashbya gossypii, among others, suggests that this omics approach needs to be used together for more comprehensive results on spontaneous fermentation. In conclusion, studies combining techniques such as metabarcoding and metaproteomics should be considered in fermentation studies, as a single technique would result in omissions regarding the activity of certain microorganisms that may be important for the course of spontaneous fermentation. © 2024

Response time can be considered as a crucial indicator in research involving transport. This indicator usually appears associated with SCM, integrating processes related to the product design and its consequent delivery as part of operations management. This concept may be adequate for the management of EMS operations: response time is defined as the interval between receiving a telephone call at an EMS agency and the arrival of an ambulance and a team at the location of an incident and is a valid indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of the EMS. The objective of this study was to analyze the response time in the EMS called SAMU 192 Southwest of Paraná, a Brazilian EMS agency. From the concepts provided by the literature, this research was able to identify limitations in the internal processes, ICT structure and information quality that must support decision making for ambulance dispatch in SAMU 192 Southwest of Paraná. This set of constraints compromises not only the time taken to respond to emergency calls, but the responsiveness of the EMS as a whole. Further research should be conducted following the steps described in detail in the methodology. Thus, it is a work in progress and presents the perspective for additional research.

Biotic stress consists of damage to plants through other living organisms. Efficient control of biotic agents such as pests and pathogens (viruses, fungi, bacteria, etc.) is closely related to the concept of agricultural sustainability. Agricultural sustainability promotes the development of new technologies that allow the reduction of environmental impacts, greater accessibility to farmers and, consequently, increase on productivity. The use of computer vision with deep learning methods allows the early and correct identification of the stress-causing agent. So, corrective measures can be applied as soon as possible to mitigate the problem. The objective of this work is to design an effective and practical system capable of identifying and estimating the stress severity caused by biotic agents on coffee leaves. The proposed approach consists of a multi-task system based on convolutional neural networks. In addition, we have explored the use of data augmentation techniques to make the system more robust and accurate. The experimental results obtained for classification as well as for severity estimation indicate that the proposed system might be a suitable tool to assist both experts and farmers in the identification and quantification of biotic stresses in coffee plantations. This paper presents a review of literature concepts about Reverse Logistics, Healthcare Waste Management, International Accreditations and Quality. It also provides an overview and benchmark data of healthcare facilities as the first part of an Action Research that intends to discuss results about how much is crucial to create guidelines and adjust waste management plan including Reverse Logistic at healthcare services, especially non-hazardous medical waste management. Economic globalization and population growth have greatly challenged energy, water and land resources to meet demand at national and supra-national level. A growing share of this demand is met through trade. The Belt and Road, a major global initiative of China, with trade as one of its core fields is of particular importance due to greater potential of economic growth, substantial population size and varying degree of resource availability. The initiative reflects a new phase of globalization yet resources management with nexus thinking has received little attention. The increasing economic interdependence of national economies have contributed to rise in production and trade of goods and services, these activities require the input of energy-water-land and generate disturbances in the environment. The multi-regional input-output approach is utilized, to assess resources use by production as well as consumption (for the year 2010). A nexus strength indicator was developed to show the simultaneous use of multiple resources in economic system, conceived as resource nexus. The ternary diagrams were used for screening resources combinations along with *** revealed that China has strong nexus strength that indicates large usage of the three resources together. Besides China, the East European countries were also positioned mostly at the center of ternary plot suggesting somewhat equal contributions of energy, water and land to the resource nexus. On the contrary, countries that appeared at the margins of the plot indicated one or two stronger nexus components in the three resources system. For instance, Russia largely used land, South Korea was entirely driven by energy while India mostly used water in the ternary mix. Energy microgrids have acquired great importance recently thanks to their main characteristics: decentralized generation, use of renewable energy sources in a distributed way, energy storage capacities and the possibility of controlling and managing the use of power flows. This makes the microgrids an excellent option to reduce losses in the transmission and distribution lines and to reduce the use and dependence on fossil fuels worldwide. This article presents a methodology for designing and simulating renewable energy microgrids to operate in countries located near the equator. For this, several mathematical models are proposed for the different components of a microgrid: photovoltaic generator, wind turbine, battery bank and inverter for connection to the electricity grid. Solar and wind resources of five Colombian cities at low latitudes are analyzed: Barranquilla, Santa Marta, Cartagena, Riohacha and Lorica; through NASA’s satellite measurement databases. Through the use of neural networks, microgrids are modeled to meet the monthly energy demand of residential users in the proposed cities. The power curves, energy, performance factor and performance variables of the designed systems are presented and discussed. The results allow to validate the excellent energy option represented by microgrids for low-latitude countries, with good rates of solar radiation and wind speed.
