Biogas : Alternative energy on supporting environmentally coffee shop in Samosir Island

Samosir Island is one of tourism destination in Indonesia and there was an increasing of coffee shop number. This research tries to investigate how much financial profit received by coffee shop if it use biogas as a new energy source. This research had been conducted from April to June 2018. Research parameter were production costs, income, revenue, Benefit Cost Ratio, Revenue Cost Ratio, Return On Investment, Break Even Point, and identify opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses by SWOT analysis to identify whether the community of Samosir is willing to use biogas. The results of financial analysis namely production cost IDR 1,964,500; income of IDR.4,360,000; revenue of IDR. 2,303,000; B/C (%) was 79.7; R/C (%) was 151; ROI (year) of 1.6; BEP Price was IDR. 5,302; BEP production of 361 glass. By SWOT Analysis it was known that development strategies are taken place include socialize biogas technology, benefits of biogas on energy, fertilizer and soil quality to the community, benefits of biogas in saving fuel purchases and providing biogas stock devices on biogas group. The result showed that biogas was worthy of being used as a new energy source on the coffee shop business on Samosir Island.

The Municipal Human Development Index (HDI) was established by the United Nations Development program. It uses data from longevity, education, and income to infer regional social and economic life quality. This work developed a multivariate analysis of the HDI data evolution in years 1991, 2000 and 2010 of 167 municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte State, northeast Brazil. Self-organizing (Kohonen or SOM) maps were used to perform clustering and data visualization. The approach uses map segmentation with k-means algorithm after SOM training. Transition analysis from municipalities in different studied years are performed, presenting ranking of clusters in terms of the three main HDI dimensions. Five groups of municipalities resulted from intragroup similarities and intergroup dissimilarities in each period. The segmented maps present similar municipalities. Thematic maps of the region after data clustering are also shown. © 2017 IEEE.

Mechanical property determination for combined sheet and bulk metal forming process by plane strain compression test

A new forming technique has been developed and improved to reduce the forming load, eliminate forming defects and minimize material waste. The Combined sheet and bulk metal forming process (SBMF) is developed by combining the advantages of both sheet and bulk forming processes. The workpiece is started by using a thick sheet. It will form the material by a common stamping process to preform a skeleton shape and later on the local feature is forged to get the precise dimension. To design this process, Finite Element Modeling (FEM) was applied for the process analysis to determine the flow behavior during the deformation. The flow stress is normally obtained from the conventional tests, namely, upsetting or tensile test, in which the flow behavior would be much different from the real behavior of the SBMF process. To make the simulation result more accurate, plane strain compression test (PSCT) was proposed to determine the flow stress of the material. To achieve the plane strain condition is not realistic and would be rather difficult. The spread exponent was proposed in the equation to determine the accurate effective stress which would compensate the effect of the nonplane strain condition. In this experiment, the material was SS316L with the thickness of 4.5 mm. Teflon and oils were used as lubricants to reduce friction. FEM of PSCT was conducted by using the flow stress obtained from PSCT with different friction coefficients. It was found that the load-stroke curve obtained from the Teflon lubrication condition could provide the friction coefficient closed to zero. This should be suitably used in the test for determining the flow stress in PSCT.

The effects of different types of welding current on the characteristics of nickel aluminum bronze using gas metal arc welding

This study aims to investigate the effects of different types of welding current on the characteristics of Nickel Aluminum Bronze Alloy (NAB) such as microstructure, hardness, depth/width ratio and dilution by using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). The mechanized GMAW was employed for the bead on plate welding of NAB using 3 levels of heat input, 500-600 J/mm, 700-800 J/mm. and 800-900 J/mm with 2 types of welding current: standard and pulsed. The AWS.A5.7 ERCuNiAl solid wire and 100% argon shielding gas were applied. The results indicated that welding current types did not significantly affect the microstructures in the weld area and heat affected zone (HAZ).The hardness of welding from both welding current types were comparable with the average hardness of 160-180 HV in weld metal and 200-240 HV in the HAZ. Nevertheless the more heat per unit length (HI) was the higher depth/width ratio was. However, for pulsed current, the metal was transfer form solid wire to the NAB during the peak current of pulsed current resulting in deeper penetration but with higher dilution ratio compared to standard current. This could indicate that the pulsed current could be more appropriated for groove welding while the standard current for the built-up overlay welding.

This paper describes the operational performance results after one year of monitoring (2017), for the first photovoltaic (PV) micro-grid installed in Medio San Juan, Andagoya (at 5°05’34”N 76º41’43”W and 96m of altitude) in Chocó, Colombia. The renewable energy system consists of a 20 kW photovoltaic array, a three-phase grid connection inverter of the same capacity and a 132.7 kAh energy storage system. This microgrid (MG) is installed in the Renewable Energy Building of Chocó, Colombia. Power generation of the photovoltaic system and the behavior of the building’s energy storage system, was evaluated by a remote monitoring system, developed through the internet. An Optimal Power Flow (OPF) model is applied to analyze the building’s energy storage performance (integrated by two battery banks) and it is validated with the micro-grid performance results for each month of 2017. The results showed that the generation of altern (AC) PV- energy was 23301 kWh/year for 2017. The average of the photovoltaic system’s efficiency was 11.09 %. The correlation between the OPF model results and the stored energy reported 98.79% for the battery banks.

The safety of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) remains a critical challenge for their clinical translation. To address this, we developed a machine learning (ML) framework that predicts NP toxicity both and , leveraging physicochemical properties and experimental conditions. A curated cytotoxicity dataset was used to train and validate binary classification models, with top-performing models undergoing explainability analysis to identify key determinants of toxicity and establish structure-toxicity relationships. External testing with diverse inorganic NPs validated the predictive accuracy of the framework for settings. To enable organ-specific toxicity predictions , we integrated a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model into the ML pipeline to quantify NP exposure across organs. Retraining the ML models with PBPK-derived exposure metrics yielded robust predictions of organ-specific nanotoxicity, further validating the framework. This PBPK-informed ML approach can thus serve as a potential alternative approach to streamline NP safety assessment, enabling the rational design of safer NPs and expediting their clinical translation.

Application of Response Surface Methodology for Biodiesel Synthesis Optimization Through Transesterification Reaction using h-zeolite/ki Heterogeneous Catalyst

Biodiesel production based on crude palm oil (CPO) using heterogeneous catalysts is a new hope for solving the energy crisis. One type of heterogeneous catalyst is H-Zeolite/KI synthesized from natural zeolite impregnated with 0.05% (w/v) KI compound for 2 hours. The research focuses on determining the optimum operating conditions for biodiesel production using H-zeolite/KI catalysts. As raw material used CPO which has pre-treatment through an esterification reaction using 15% H2SO4 (w/v) as catalyst, temperature 65°C, stirrer speed of 400 rpm for 2 hours to reduce the free fatty acid content of raw materials up to 40%. Optimization of biodiesel production is carried out at the transesterification reaction. The research data was designed following the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) method using 3 independent variables and 5 levels, namely the ratio of H-zeolite/KI catalyst, transesterification temperature and mole methanol: CPO ratio with coded level (-1.682), (-1), (0), (+1), (+1.682). The research results show that the optimum operating conditions of biodiesel production were at the ratio of H-zeolite/KI catalyst at 2% - 2.5% (w/w), temperature at 45°C-50°C and mole ratio of methanol: CPO at (1:6). The biodiesel product was confirmed using gas chromatography and showed ester content of 88.02%. Characteristics of biodiesel products showed flash point 130C, acid number 0.4%, glycerol free 0%, viscosity 3.6 cP, density0.879 gr/cm3.

Bicycle sharing systems (BSS) arise as a proposal to respond to the challenges of urban mobility as a healthy, efficient, and relatively inexpensive mean of transportation. Although these systems are widespread, BSS still present challenges for implementation. In this context, this paper aims to identify the barriers to implementation of this kind of product-service systems (PSS) and to analyze which ones most impacted the failure of two BSS. The main results demonstrate that resistance to change both by users and those involved with the project hinders BSS implementation. Besides involving several actors, the system needs an adequate projection of the demand and costs. Some alternatives are: the integration of stakeholders in the development of the solution and the promotion of policies for the diffusion of sharing systems and education to conscious consumption. The results could be used in future PSS implementations to support overcoming the barriers.
