With large cooling potentials, natural ventilation is the main passive technique applied to tropical buildings. In computational simulations studies, the discharge coefficient (Cd) is required as a parameter to characterize the resistance the opening imposes to the airflow. As shape and angle of shading devices influence the airflow through the openings, accurate setting of Cd has a significant impact on the characterization of the cooling phenomena. This study investigates the effect of accurate Cd of five different configurations of shading devices. Using a classroom as a generic case, corrected Cd obtained from CFD models were used to simulations on the software EnergyPlus identifying airflow levels and periods of thermal comfort under the climate conditions of São Paulo. Results indicate that using 0.6 as a Cd value in the simulations is adequate for openings with shading devices that has a lower level of obstruction on the façade. However, for geometries with several slats and low angles, Cd values can be as low as 0.34. In this case, the airflow through the room decreases in average 15% in relation to the model that used usual Cd. The outcomes contribute to a more precise prediction of natural ventilation of buildings with shaded openings. © Copyright 2017 NCEUB.

High calcium fly ash geopolymer composite was prepared by incorporating short carbon fiber in the geopolymer matrix. The carbon fiber (CF) content was varied from 0 to 1%, the liquid to ash ratio was controlled at 0.5. The workability, mechanical and electrical properties of the geopolymer composites were examined. The result showed that the incorporation of 0.5%CF and above resulted in the ductile failure of specimen. The increasing CF content also resulted in decreasing workability and mechanical strength. The electrical resistivity was also reduced and was more stable to the curing age and temperature. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve of 60°C curing provided less peaks than that of 25°C.

Continuous process for biodiesel production using homogeneous catalysts finds many constraints. Heterogeneous catalysts are the solution for the production of continuous biodiesel. One of the heterogeneous catalysts is zeolite/KIO3. Determination of operating conditions for heterogeneous catalysts, especiallyzeolite/KIO3 is required to obtain appropriate process conditions in order to the continuous system. The Taguchi method is one of experimental design that focuses on the variable approach to product quality improvement by control operation condition. Taguchi method is designed using 4 independent variables with 2 levels (4x2), which are temperature, mole ratio, time reaction and heterogeneous catalyst ratio. The Taguchi method can provide an analysis of the influence of each process variable significantly. This study aims to determine optimal operating conditions for the production of biodiesel with the KIO3 heterogeneous catalyst. Biodiesel is synthesized by esterification (pre-treatment) and transesterification following the Taguchi method. The source of triglyceride is crude palm oil while the alkyl source comes from methanol. Based on the result of analysis Taguchi method known that all process variables have an effect to transesterification reaction. But, variable temperature and reactant mole ratio give the most significant influence and show the interaction with p-value value 0.000 (temperature) and p-value 0.001(reactant mole ratio).Thus, for the production of biodiesel using the KIO3 heterogeneous catalyst obtained optimal operation conditions at temperature 65°C, mole ratio 1:6, time reaction 120 minutes and heterogeneous catalyst ratio at 5% (w/w). ANOVA gave result decided to reject Ho, and decided the reaction model influence by the variable process.

The purpose of this paper is to present a multicriteria methodology with spatial visualization, in order to identify most vulnerable areas regarding violence. We used Dominance-based Rough Set Approach to aggregate social, economic, and demographic characteristics, as well to include the preferences of a decision maker. Among the multicriteria methods, this one has the advantage of do not require the establishment of parameters, such as weights and thresholds. The decision maker only needs to choose a set of reference examples that represents his opinion toward the problem. This method applies decision rules to classify the set of alternatives. In this paper, this methodology was used aiming to classify the census tracts of a city in relation to the vulnerability to homicide. The result is a classification of all 1,854 census tracts of the city of Recife (Brazil) into five vulnerability levels. Based on this application, we can conclude, therefore, that this method may be useful to define where public policies should be allocated, when it is concerned with reduction of violence. © 2016 IEEE.

Product-Service Systems (PSS) have been discussed as promising business strategies towards a circular economy (CE). However, PSS solutions are not necessarily more sustainable. PSS lifecycle management may play an important role to improve the offering and achieve sustainability benefits. Nevertheless, bottom-up issues for CE implementation in the industry such as lifecycle management are still little discussed in the literature. In this sense, this paper aims to explore a PSS business strategy adopted by a large white goods manufacturer that transitioned from a linear to a circular business, and the practices applied throughout the entire lifecycle that may be valuable to achieve CE requirements. A case-based approach was employed in this study and multiple sources of evidence were considered. Data were analyzed in the light of the literature, considering an inductive approach. The main preliminary findings suggest that resources consumption reduction and cost savings can be obtained through lifecycle management practices that take into consideration CE issues since the beginning of life of the PSS offering. Design practices, the adoption of different strategies at the end of life (reuse/remanufacturing or recycle), and the implementation of cleaner production practices are some of the identified practices that can contribute to achieve resource efficiency and CE requirements. This is a work in progress and further work is going to focus on a quantitative analysis of the environmental and economic performance of this PSS. In addition, as this study focused on a use-oriented PSS, future research may compare lifecycle management practices adopted by other and distinct PSS categories, and how different lifecycle management practices may contribute to achieving resource efficiency.

RenPower: Software for sizing renewable energy microgrids for academic teaching

This article describes the development of the RenPower (Renewable Power) software for sizing of renewable energy microgrids able to be used in academic teaching. RenPower was implemented using the graphic programming language LabVIEWTM, and being freely used, allows students, teachers and researchers to select a geographical location anywhere in the world, define a user’s monthly energy demand and obtain the annual photovoltaic and wind energy to meet the needs. The software also allows to calculate the amount of batteries to store the energy of the microgrid, as well as the power of the inverter for connection to the electrical network. The sizing results obtained with the software are identical to those obtained by theoretical calculations. RenPower was developed by the following universities: Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano (Colombia), Northwestern Polytechnical University (China), The University of Oklahoma (USA), Universitat Politécnica de Valencia (Spain), Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Colombia) and Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó (Colombia).

Among the wide range of applications of Cobalt Ferrite (CoFe2O4), its usage for the manufacturing of modern electronic devices such as solar panels, capacitors and batteries has been studied' lately. Hence, solar-powered vehicles, which strongly rely their performance on energy efficient electronics, is a sector that could particularly benefit from enhanced applications of such material. In this work, the synthesis of Cobalt Ferrite was studied by means of Solution Combustion Synthesis (SCS) using iron nitrate nonahydrate and cobalt nitrate hexahydrate as precursors, and glycine as fuel. The nitrates were dissolved in distilled water and placed under stirring and heating for 5 minutes; when the temperature reached 60°C, glycine was added; after complete homogenization, the solution was placed in an electric oven (400°C) until complete combustion (approximately 15 minutes). Three syntheses were carried out using different concentrations of fuel: lean, stoichiometric and rich. The product crystallite size and composition were investigated in order to determine the influence of the fuel concentration on the structure of the produced cobalt ferrite.

Visually estimating the gait score in a flock is not a precise task. The evaluation is done based on scores from 0 (sound bird) to 5 (lame bird). The extremes are simply identifiable;however, the midway scores are not evident. This study aimed to evaluate the gait scores by calculating the speed and acceleration of broilers (male and female) using video images. To this end, a special platform was developed and covered with bedding substrate. A blue panel provided a background to contrast with the birds. Selected broilers from the different gait scores were placed to walk on the runway, and a video was recorded. An algorithm was developed to analyze the video streams. The bird centroid was detected and through which the broilers speed, and acceleration from gait score was calculated. The multivariate analysis was applied to data. The velocity and acceleration differed between male and female broilers decreasing as the gait score increased. Further developments are needed for automatically detecting the broiler gait scores.

Work Organization Model Applied on Smallholder Dairy Farms in Brazil

This research identified difficulties faced by dairy farmers in family farming, describing this diagnosis through ergonomic demand items （EDIs）. The objective was to elaborate an organization model of work related to dairy farming （WRDF）. As a methodology, a descriptive exploratory study was carried out in 14 family dairy farms that were visited and had their activities monitored. As main results, 11 EDIs were identified. The ones grouped in the infrastructure factor showed the highest resolution priority. The WRDF model was composed of three categories： management, public policies management and infrastructure, which were further subdivided into technical and social aspects. From this perspective, it is believed that the implementation of the model can bring organizational improvement, once adjustments are made in the procedures and working conditions. This study sheds light on the conditions that need to be resolved with higher priority so that the farmers will remain in the dairy business.
