Proposal of a Hotspot-based Approach to Identifying Social Impacts along the Product-Service Systems Life Cycle in the Early Design Phases

The potential for sustainability has been highlighted as one of the most important characteristics of product-service systems (PSS). Nevertheless, a PSS is not intrinsically sustainable. Methods and tools for PSS sustainability assessment should be developed to be integrated into the design process, especially in the early design phases, in order to conceive sustainable solutions. In addition, a PSS should be planned considering the three sustainability dimensions, from a life cycle perspective. However, PSS design and assessment considering the full life cycle is scarcely addressed in the literature, especially concerning the social dimension of sustainability. In this sense, this study proposes a streamlined life cycle assessment based approach to identify potential social impacts along the PSS life cycle that can be integrated into the early PSS design stages. The proposal is based on a hotspot analysis, which identifies where in the life cycle the most significant issues may occur. The proposal was developed in three main phases, anchored in both hotspots analysis and PSS literature. After developing it, 10 experts in PSS and sustainability assessed the proposal strengths and weakness. Some suggestions were offered by the researchers and improvements were introduced to the proposal regarding PSS life cycle phases and the social impact subcategories. The experts considered the hotspot analysis suitable to be applied in the early design stages when there is not much information yet regarding the system to conduct a complete life cycle assessment. The next step of this research is the proposal assessment by practitioners in industry. Further work will also integrate the environmental dimension of sustainability into the proposal.

Soybean is one of the largest grain production in Brazil, playing an important role in the local economy. In this context, the use of information systems are essential to ensure the communication between the several stages of Brazilian supply chain. Therefore, we will stand out in this paper the role trading companies play in the soybean market, emphasizing the aspects of the use of information systems. Thus, we did a study of the major organizations in Brazil mapping the information systems used. In accordance with several studies, we observed the relevance of business management systems as an organizational strategy.

The houses for the low income residential construction sector are one of the most prominent niches in the building construction sector in Brazil. However, the construction process continues to handcraft, which creates many errors and quality problems. To reach greater efficiency, it is necessary to have large-scale production with repeatability, standardization, high productivity and an accurate management system. The final product of the construction is a unique building, not in serial production. What makes it a project management model widely used nowadays is its unique product through a specific design. However, these management models are generic, for all kinds of activities and sectors, and it does not refer to innovation and industrial environment. Meanwhile, the construction industry needs a model for developing its innovative approaches for the best project management practices, relevant management and the peculiarities of the industry. The reference models suggest that the product can develop by dividing into stages. That division is a way to deal with the complex process of development and aims, in addition, to establish control points to ensure increased design efficiency. The purpose of this article is to generate? from the comparison of the models mentioned? a preliminary proposal phase for new reference model for innovation in construction. © 2016 Portland International Conference on Management of engineering and Technology, Inc.

Urban in Indonesia, is no longer limited as a center of community settlement. Now the city also functions as a center of government, a central hierarchy, and a center of economic growth. As a logical consequence of the role of cities as a center of growth and economy, urban contributions to national economic growth are increasing. To overcome this problem, a portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system was designed. With the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the dryer will be easily moved and flexible to use. The advantage of portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is the drying process could be done continuously with a little human power. Therefore, this portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is designed to use renewable energy sources. To examine the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the foodstuff was used for a testing of ingredients. The portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system testing show that the amount of water content in the foodstuff reduced, the drying rate accelerate. In addition, the amount of heat energy needed for the drying process also reduced. Hence process of drying foodstuff more efficienct.

Tree architecture has evolved to support a top-heavy above-ground biomass, but this integral feature poses a weight-induced challenge to trunk stability. Maintaining an upright stem is expected to require vertical proprioception through feedback between sensing stem weight and responding with radial growth. Despite its apparent importance, the principle by which plant stems respond to vertical loading forces remains largely unknown. Here, by manipulating the stem weight of downy birch (Betula pubescens) trees, we show that cambial development is modulated systemically along the stem. We carried out a genetic study on the underlying regulation by combining an accelerated birch flowering program with a recessive mutation at the ELIMÄKI locus (EKI), which causes a mechanically defective response to weight stimulus resulting in stem collapse after just 3 months. We observed delayed wood morphogenesis in eki compared with WT, along with a more mechanically elastic cambial zone and radial compression of xylem cell size, indicating that rapid tissue differentiation is critical for cambial growth under mechanical stress. Furthermore, the touch-induced mechanosensory pathway was transcriptionally misregulated in eki, indicating that the ELIMÄKI locus is required to integrate the weight-growth feedback regulation. By studying this birch mutant, we were able to dissect vertical proprioception from the gravitropic response associated with reaction wood formation. Our study provides evidence for both local and systemic responses to mechanical stimuli during secondary plant development. Alonso-Serra et al. use birch trees to explore vertical proprioception, the growth response of stems to changes in aerial body weight. They identify a genetic locus, which is required for this developmental response, and study the consequences of cambial growth under mechanical stress. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Improved Combinatorial Benders Decomposition for a Scheduling Problem with Unrelated Parallel Machines

This paper addresses the unrelated parallel machines scheduling problem with sequence and machine dependent setup times. Its goal is to minimize the makespan. The problem is solved by a combinatorial Benders decomposition. This method can be slow to converge. Therefore, three procedures are introduced to accelerate its convergence. The first procedure is a new method that consists of terminating the execution of the master problem when a repeated optimal solution is found. The second procedure is based on the multicut technique. The third procedure is based on the warm-start. The improved Benders decomposition scheme is compared to a mathematical formulation and a standard implementation of Benders decomposition algorithm. In the experiments, two test sets from the literature are used, with 240 and 600 instances with up to 60 jobs and 5 machines. For the first set the proposed method performs 21.85% on average faster than the standard implementation of the Benders algorithm. For the second set the proposed method failed to find an optimal solution in only 31 in 600 instances, obtained an average gap of 0.07%, and took an average computational time of 377.86 s, while the best results of the other methods were 57, 0.17%, and 573.89 s, respectively. © 2017 Francisco Regis Abreu Gomes and Geraldo Robson Mateus.

The Brazilian pig production generates substantial effluent that may be used for the generation of bioenergy. Bioenergy is an opportunity to reduce costs production and environment impact, as well as to offer better prices to consumers and obtain a better profit unit. Thus, the present study aims to show the importance of spending in pig production as a precondition for a proper sustainable business management. The study shows the scenario of pig production in Brazil, and the Direct-Costing concepts as a decision support tool for the production optimization based on the demand of slaughter plants. A case study was conducted on a farm located in the Southeast of Brazil. For financial measurements, the Direct-Costing method was used. The survey was conducted with the use of financial and accounting information by the composition of farm costs from the production process to the turnover in the slaughter of the pigs. The results showed that the usage of alternative energy based on waste of pigs activity provided a profit increase of 52.73% per unit to famer. Thus, we conclude that biodigester applied in pigs farms is profitable.

Restricted Boltzmann machine to determine the input weights for extreme learning machines

The Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is a single-hidden layer feedforward neural network (SLFN) learning algorithm that can learn effectively and quickly. The ELM training phase assigns the input weights and bias randomly and do not change them in the whole process. Although the network works well, the random weights in the input layer can make the algorithm less effective and impact on its performance. Therefore, we propose a new approach to determine the input weights and bias for the ELM using the restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM), which we call RBM-ELM. We compare our new approach with a well-known approach to improve the ELM and a state of the art algorithm to select the weights for the ELM. The results show that the RBM-ELM outperforms both methodologies and achieve a better performance than the ELM. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.
