First report of cherry virus A infecting Prunus mume in South Korea

We report the detection of cherry virus A (CVA) in a Prunus mume sample using Illumina HiSeq 2500 paired-end RNA sequencing. CVA isolate OC shared highest sequence identity with CVA isolate J, which was recently identified in P. armeniaca in Japan. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of CVA infecting P. mume in Korea and the first complete genome sequence of CVA isolated from P. mume in the world. © 2017, Indian Virological Society.

European Union, USA and Brazil respond to 74% of pork carcass production. However, the productivity is affected by quality issues in production process, pre-handling logistics and transformation process. The objective of this paper was investigated the causes of Brazil's pig carcass condemnation and calculate its respective costs. A descriptive statistical analyzes was performed using data between 2010 and 2014 and costs are calculated comparing losses with pork price in the Brazilian market, in US dollars. The results showed that cost of losses for Pork Industry were estimated in US$ 27.827 million per year.

The present paper describes the perception and influence of retailers over consumer behavior and examine the factors that affect the meat consumption in São Paulo, Brazil. A survey was conducted in 30 butcher shops between June and July 2014. The data were analyzed using Hierarchical Cluster and K-Means Analysis on to Statistica software. Results identify three different important players for the Meat Supply Chains in São Paulo city: Butcher shops, mix retailers and trust retailers. The practice of the Reverse Logistics (RL) has increasingly been in evidence by the academy and by the companies, due to sustainability and costs. In a progressively competitive business environment, cost reduction becomes a global recurring theme, and in this aspect, RL is a strong ally in the strategic plan of the company. With the advancement of the technology it is more and more common the launch of a new product on the market, increasing the probability of improper disposal of electronic waste by the consumers that replace them. This paper aims to analyze the internal processes of the mechanisms of RL of one of the biggest logistics companies around the world that uses RL as economic and environmental strategy, and identify areas for improvement. We conclude giving some suggestions in order to improve the efficiency of the system.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unparalleled political, economic, and social ramifications, exacerbating global food insecurity (FI). To understand the overall impact of the pandemic and how different socio-economic groups were affected, we assessed prevalence and severity of FI in a sample of 18,997 households across seven countries in South America. We employed the Food Insecurity Experience Scale developed by the FAO. Our results showed that pre-pandemic, 4.5% of the sampled population across the entire continent faced Moderate FI, while 0.6% experienced severe FI. During the pandemic, Moderate FI increased to 16.9% (+ 12.4%), and Severe FI to 2.7% (+ 2.1%). By country, pre-pandemic households in Venezuela had the highest prevalence of Moderate FI (9.7%), with Peru experiencing the highest Severe FI frequency (1.1%). Peru had the greatest rise in Moderate (+ 23.9%) and Severe FI (+ 4.6%) during the pandemic. Low-income households, defined as those earning < 2 minimum wages per month, were most susceptible to FI. Uruguayan low-income families exhibited the most significant rise (+ 40.4%) in Moderate FI, while those in Peru experienced an increase of + 9.1% in Severe FI. This study measures the profound and far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on FI in South America. Our findings also emphasise the critical importance of implementing effective public policy interventions to improve resilience against future shocks. This would enable policymakers to develop targeted strategies that address the immediate challenges posed by pandemics as well as laying the groundwork for a more resilient and sustainable food security landscape in the region. © The Author(s) 2025.

This paper aims at exploring how some factors identified in the PSS and product/service innovation literature can hinder or foster sustainable PSS implementation in developing countries, since there is a lack of knowledge concerning the characteristics of PSS transition processes in different contexts. The identified factors were investigated empirically, through two PSS solutions located in an emerging economy. The main results demonstrated the role of some potential factors in supporting the implementation and diffusion of PSS solutions, especially those related to the involvement of multiple actors in the value creation and the social embeddedness. However, the role of those factors still need to be investigated in future works, since only two cases were analyzed in this research. Analyses of successful and unsuccessful PSS cases as well as the identification of other factors and characteristics of PSS implementation in different contexts are directions for further research.

This paper aims to present a theoretical framework for performance measurement of supply chain quality management (SCQM). A review of the literature on supply chain quality management, supply chain and quality management was conducted to develop key performance measurements related to six areas of integration between quality management and supply chain management environment: leadership, continuous improvement and innovation, sustainability, stakeholder involvement and commitment, information, and management and strategic planning. The findings suggest that SCQM integration can be assessed by nine performance measurements. The study contributes to our understanding of quality management practices within a supply chain (SC) environment from an integrated perspective. It extends the concept of supply quality chain integration by focusing on key performance measurement that may help to improve the overall performance of the supply chain.

Investigation of the visual attention role in clinical bioethics decision-making using machine learning algorithms

This study proposes the use of a computational approach based on machine learning (ML) algorithms to build predictive models using eye tracking data. Our intention is to provide results that may support the study of medical investigation in the decision-making process in clinical bioethics, particularly in this work, in cases of euthanasia. The data used in the approach were collected from 75 students of the nursing undergraduate course using an eye tracker. The available data were processed through feature selection methods, and were later used to create models capable of predicting the euthanasia decision through ML algorithms. Statistical experiments showed that the predictive model resultant from the multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithm led to the best performance compared with the other tested algorithms, presenting an accuracy of 90.7% and a mean area under the ROC curve of 0.90. Interesting knowledge (patterns and rules) for the studied bioethical decision-making was extracted using simulations with MLP models and inspecting the obtained decision-tree rules. The good performance shown by the obtained MLP predictive model demonstrates that the proposed investigation approach may be used to test scientific hypotheses related to visual attention and decision-making.

This study aimed to identify the main causes of pork carcass condemnation due to weather variations in pork industry losses. Two databases were used in the present study from 2010 to 2014. The temperature humidity index (THI) was calculated, and separated into three levels: Normal (THI≤ 79), Danger (793 tons;which represents 0.54% of the total Brazilian annually processed pork. The maximum temperature humidity index values (MTHI) were found during summer and spring, differing from fall and winter (p 84) presented positive and stronger correlation with pork carcass condemnation than THI Danger group (79 to 83).

An efficient transport network needs an infrastructure that would be able to provide an optimization in cargo transport, bringing agility and speed. With respect to this, waterways can be considering a solution due to its energy efficiency, greater productivity in relation to the cargo volumes, and low cost per ton. The purpose of this study is compare Brazilian waterways with the American waterways about costs and infrastructure available. To that end we conducted a bibliographical study to collect data and make feasible the comparisons between countries. The results showed that in Brazil, the one cargo tonne transported by one thousand kilometers, cost three times more that in the United States.
