Selecting Oil Wells for Hydraulic Fracturing: A Comparison between Genetic-Fuzzy and Neuro Fuzzy Systems

Hydraulic fracturing is widely used to increase oil well production and to reduce formation damage. Reservoir studies and engineering analyses are carried out to select the wells for this kind of operation. As the reservoir parameters have some diffuse characteristics, Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) have been tested for these selection processes in the last few years. This paper compares the performance of a neuro fuzzy system and a genetic fuzzy system used for selecting wells for hydraulic fracturing, with knowledge acquired from an operational data base to set the SIF membership functions. The training data and the validation data used were the same for both systems. We concluded that, despite the genetic fuzzy system being a newer process, it obtained better results than the neuro fuzzy system. Another conclusion was that, as the genetic fuzzy system can work with constraints, the membership functions setting kept the consistency of variable linguistic values.

DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON SAGITTAL LUMBAR SPINE CHANGES IN STUDENTS OF THE FEDERAL EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM OF FLORIANÓPOLIS

UNLABELLED:The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of sagittal lumbar spine postural abnormalities and associated factors among students in the federal educational system in Florianópolis. METHODS:288 adolescents (156 males and 132 females), aged from 15 to 18 years, who were students in the federal educational system in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, were evaluated. To gather data, photogrammetry was used following a specific protocol for postural assessment, and a questionnaire was used to identify the prevalence and frequency of pain, and the activities that triggered the problem. In the data analysis, descriptive statistics, Student's t-test for independent samples, chi-square test and Poisson's regression were used, with the significance level set at p<0.05 for all the tests. RESULTS:The prevalence of low back pain was 49.3%, with weekly frequency in 43.1% of the sample. The prevalence of deviation was 53.8%, and 90.9% corresponded to rectification of lumbar curvature, and this affected males more frequently. A significant difference in lumbar angle was found between the sexes; higher prevalence ratios of postural deviations were found in the male group. CONCLUSIONS:The prevalences of low back pain and lumbar postural deviation were high, but the relationship between these variables did not present significance. The main causes of the lumbar pain were sports practice or vigorous activities and remaining in a seated position for extended periods of time.

In this work we summarize some of our studies on paraconsistent artificial neural networks (PANN) applied to electroencephalography. We give attention to the following applications: probable diagnosis of Alzheimer disease and attention-deficit /hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). PANNs are well suited to tackle problems that human beings are good at solving, like prediction and pattern recognition. PANNs have been applied within several branches and among them, the medical domain for clinical diagnosis, image analysis, and interpretation signal analysis, and interpretation, and drug development. For study of ADHD, we have a result of recognition electroencephalogram standards (delta, theta, alpha, and beta waves) with a median kappa index of 80 %. For study of the Alzheimer disease, we have a result of clinical diagnosis possible with 80 % of sensitivity, 73 % of specificity, and a kappa index of 76 %.

The purpose of this article is to introduce and test a model for green performance assessment in supply chains. The research method was the qualitative modeling. By literature review a model was proposed, consisting of three constructs described and appraised by categorical indicators: green strategy;green innovation;and green operations. The model originated a scale, with five degrees for the measurement of the indicators: very good=1;good=0.75;neutral=0.5;bad=0.25;very bad=0. An application was made in a supply chain of the footwear industry. Focal company managers were asked to distribute importance among the constructs and fulfill the scale. Outcomes obtained, with uniform distribution, and weighted by AHP methods, reached close to 40% of the maximum possible. The worst-performing construct and indicators were operations, reverse logistics and green distribution. Actions have been proposed to improve them.

This article presents a model for performance measurement in supply chains. The methodology had two-steps: a qualitative part to identify constructs and indicators and a quantitative one to measure them. The model has two dimensions: SCOR model process: source, make, deliver, and return;and priorities: cost, quality, delivery, flexibility. A 4 x 4 matrix resulted, weighted by AHP. In the cells, indicators, with ranges and five categories [very good, good, neutral, bad, very bad] were allocated to appraise the priority in the process. The ranges were set in the planning process of SCOR. An application was done in the hard core of a supply chain of the footwear industry, including 72 indicators in four suppliers;the focal company;three distribution channels;and a return channel. The SC overall performance reached near 80% of the maximum possible value. Worst performance was flexibility in deliver and delivery in make.

This research handles a proposed technology in the defense and security system is Anti stealth technology, This technology supposes increasing radar cross section (RCS) of the stealth system by increasing relative permittivity ε' and decreasing attenuation ε" consequently loss tangent tan(δ e ). Non lethal pulsed ND YAG 532nm laser is the proposed solution for enhancing stealth EM 3500 wave absorber's relative permittivity. This research handles a probabilistic Algorithm for detecting stealth target by using neural network as future implementation for Anti stealth technology.

The program Support Plan Restructuring and Expansion of Brazilian Federal Universities (REUNI) allowed the expansion of course offerings and the number of university students in Brazil. In this sense, the participation of the Federal University of Santa Catarina allowed the creation and installation of new campuses Araranguá, Curitibanos and Joinville in 2009. The engineering Center for Mobility (CEM), installed on campus in the city of Joinville, had based their design limitations related to infrastructure in Brazil. Mobility engineering is a field of knowledge that deals with the development of technical systems and vehicular transportation infrastructure whose function is to transport people, products and information. This is a qualitative study, with analysis of documents and searches the sites, papers. In Political Pedagogical Project are offered three cycles of knowledge, the first two years of basic training and disciplines of engineering, the second course of a year, with disciplines that enable specific skills, and the third two-year cycle and how engineers in seven specialties (Naval and Oceanic engineering, Aeronautics and Space, Automotive, Railway, Mechatronics;Traffic and logistics, and transportation infrastructure). The objective of this paper is to analyze the innovative aspects of the political pedagogical project of CEM/UFSC, one of the organization in cycles with the training of engineers at the end of the fifth year of study, and also allows an exit for intermediate students who do not most want to complete engineering, at the end of the second cycle. In this case they can apply for graduation Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Mobility emphasis on training: vehicular or transport. Thus formed technicians and engineers, these professionals in underserved areas and with strong impact on the country's development.

The University is considered as playing a relevant role in the local context, as well as collaborating for the regional development due to its plural character. The Federal Universities are formal institutions that follow specific rules and regulations and are present in all Brazilian states aiming at educating professionals to meet the country's needs. Although being country-wide organizations, their action is local. A Federal University may be considered as a driver for local and regional development. Additionally, the institution has innovative principles and follows them, as is the case of UFSC (Santa Catarina Federal University) campus in Joinville-SC/BR. The aim of this paper is to analyze the creation of the Inovaparq in the light of the Triple Helix (TH) since the implementation of the Mobility engineering Center at UFSC. To this end, we adopted a qualitative approach as a method, with bibliographical and documental research, being configured as a case study. As a result of this action, there are the establishment of an Technological Innovation Park in Joinville and Region (Inovaparq), two public notices and some companies that had already working at Inovaparq platforms. The success of the incubated companies in Inovaparq is also an important outcome of this venture.
