ResumoMillions of tons of iron ore tailings (IOT) are discarded annually, being directly responsible for a significant portion of the environmental impact. Given this scenario, this work proposes the use of IOT in partial replacement of natural aggregates for coating mortars. The CCD Experimental Design considered 3 control variables: IOT replacement content, additive content and water/cement ratio. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Desirability function were applied to obtain the ideal response. Confirmation experiments validated the applied modeling, showing that the real optimal results are close to the optimized ones. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Circular economy (CE) has emerged as a strong contender for illuminating the path toward sustainability. Although companies are seen as the most important agents of change, the definition of goals and indicators for assessing the adoption of CE at the company level is still in the early phases. A company that wants to contribute to the CE, whether due to the ambition of the stakeholders or legal requirements, needs to understand what is really within its responsibilities and sphere of influence. However, measuring and evaluating the performance of circularity is still not a common practice in companies. In this context, this paper presents the development of the Overall Circularity Effectiveness (OCE) index to assess the circularity level of manufacturing companies by analyzing inputs and outputs. The index was developed following the design research methodology (DRM) with interactions between theory and practice, based on literature review, survey with companies, development, testing, and evaluation with companies. The paper also presents an application of the proposed index into a case study and discusses its usability and usefulness, comparing it with the existing company-level CE measurement approaches. The OCE was constructed to be simple to understand, practical to calculate through quantitative measures, relevant to the CE context, and generic to be applied in any type or size of manufacturing company. Although the index was developed to be used by any manufacturing company, it was applied in only four companies and all with material from the technical cycle. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The manufacturing sector is of paramount importance to a nation’s economy, as it creates employment opportunities, fosters innovation and enhances the competitive advantage in global markets. With the introduction of smart manufacturing technologies, the manufacturing sector has been able to boost its production performance, however, there is a skill gap that the manufacturing sector is facing when it comes to hiring a trained workforce. The US National Strategy for Advanced Manufacturing has underlined the importance of training an advanced manufacturing workforce with an opportunity to support historically underrepresented and underserved communities. We report the outcomes of a manufacturing training certificate program that is designed to provide equitable opportunities for high-quality, industry-relevant training that can lead to sustainable employment and economic growth. A holistic curriculum was developed to teach manufacturing education including CAD, CAM, 3D printing, AR/VR technologies, robotics and automation, assembly and production lines, and measurement systems. We report the outcomes of two cohorts that graduated in Summer 2023 and Fall 2023, in which a total of 86 training sessions were conducted. Twenty-five students enrolled and 17 students (14 males and 3 females) graduated across the two cohorts - among the graduates 47% identified as Hispanic or Latino, 41% identified as African American, and the rest identified as non-white/Hispanic;16 of the graduates belonged to the low-to-middle income category. In the future, the program can be further expanded to include on the job training opportunities with local employers. We also provide recommendations to improve the learning experience of the students and enhance participation in the program. © 2024 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The context of smart cities has been increasingly recurrent in world literature. The present study aims to analyze the contributions of leadership, governance, and people to the development of smart cities. To achieve this objective, the methodology Methodi Ordinatio was used, and data was collected from Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science using the following keywords combinations: smart cities, smart governance, smart leadership, and smart people. The results of the analysis reveal the importance of people acting with intelligent practices, as well as the need to encourage leadership and governance strategies. If there is a link between these three pillars, with the intention of sustainable development aimed at the common good, the chances of institutionalizing smart cities are greater. The study's conclusions point to the need for interconnection between individuals, leaders, and governments for a city to develop intelligently, therefore, having identified the absence of a concept that encompasses the three dimensions, this article contributes to an expanded conceptualization of smart cities.

The Stock Exchanges are safe and organized markets for stock and bond trading, which aim to expand the capital of both publicly traded companies and investors. Since 2009, cryptocurrencies have been created, mostly decentralized, registered through blockchain and encryption, which can be a new form of investment and trading. The main purpose of this research is to determine the short and long-term relationships of the main indicators of twenty-one Stock Exchanges and three cryptocurrencies and verify their effects on the financial market. The defined methodology was the VAR/VEC Model that obtained as a result the causality between all the series, which are stationary in the first difference, the VAR indicated the short-term relationship, the cointegration indicated the order for the VEC application, which was explained with the help of IRF and the variance decomposition that indicated the long-term relationship between the series and the possibility of cryptocurrencies' influence in the Stock Exchange series. The Bitcoin cryptocurrency, after the shock's application, indicated to influence the Stock Exchanges for an average time of 16 periods, Litecoin for 15 periods, and Ripple for 16 periods. The time evaluated was 24 periods and proved to be sufficient for the study's definition. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

This article aims to fill an existing knowledge gap within the literature: the characteristics of networks of publication on innovation management research and its relationship with country’s innovativeness. The study is grounded in the theory that the creation of knowledge and collaboration within networks play a pivotal role in improving a nation’s innovation capacity. It presents and describes the characteristics of co-authorship networks of scientific publications among authors from different countries. The published articles were extracted from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, considering a period of 12 years. Following the identification of pivotal countries, the research proceeded to investigate whether their positioning within the network has an impact on their innovation capabilities. To underpin this analysis, data from the Global Innovation Index ranking were employed. Among the six countries demonstrating noteworthy centrality metrics throughout the entire period, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom are also categorized as innovators according to the Global Innovation Index. The overlap observed suggests a relationship between countries maintaining consolidated and resilient innovation networks and positive performance in terms of innovation. However, it should be noted that innovation is influenced by a range of factors, including strategies and policies on international collaboration. © The Author(s) 2024.

The traditional form of production is called linear economy, which consists of extracting, transforming, producing, consuming and discarding, and is threatened by a series of factors. Among them, we can list the increase in the world population, which went from 3.3 billion people in 1965 to 7.79 billion in 2020, which will consequently lead to an increase in the consumer class. One of the philosophies for meeting this challenge is the Circular Economy (CE), which provides the economic system with an alternative flow model. CE is seen as a new form of sustainability and has gained popularity in the scarcity of resources, the circulation of materials and the facilitation of the reuse and recycling paradigm. Some countries, concerned about the impact of the linear economy on the environment, have proposed specific laws that address the shift from the traditional mode of production to a circular approach. Germany and Japan were pioneers in promoting CE in concrete policies. Followed by China in 2008. Given this scenario, this study aimed to raise which public policies were objects of study in the period 2017 to 2021 and which tools were used to analyze the policies. A systematic review of the literature was carried out, with articles searched in the ScienceDirect and WoS databases, using the descriptors: Circular Economy and Policies. The Sample consisted of 29 articles. The study identified an increase in initiatives to seek circularity through the formulation of public policies. Many countries are demanding more sustainable production processes, with an emphasis on energy savings and fewer carbon emissions. For this, a waste treatment policy is an initial step to seek greater degrees of circularity. The most used tool to study these policies was Framework 9R. Because with it you have an idea of what initial stage the country is in and what stage can be pursued in the future. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

An immobilized hydrogen-producing consortium investigated biohydrogen production from food waste using a combination of sodium alginate and cassava rhizome biochar. We investigated the effect of varying the biochar concentration from 0 to 3% and the size of immobilized cells from 1 to 7 mm. Immobilized cells were prepared using 50% (v/v) enriched hydrogen-producing consortium, 2% (w/v) sodium alginate, and 0 to 3% (w/v) cassava rhizome biochar. The optimal conditions for achieving the highest hydrogen production in the batch fermentation reactor were identified as a biochar concentration of 2% (w/v) and an immobilized cell size of 2 mm. The highest hydrogen yield, maximum hydrogen production rate, and lag time recorded were 0.69 mmol H2/g-COD, 0.02 mmol H2/g-COD.h, and 41.51 h, respectively. This research highlights the potential of cassava biochar technology for efficient biohydrogen production from food waste, contributing to renewable energy generation and sustainable waste management. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This research is dedicated to formulating a practical problem related to the assignment of oncology clinic routes. The objective is to schedule medical events for patients attending health centers, taking into account the variable demand and limited resources in this field. To achieve this, three types of solutions are considered. The first is an Online Scheduling Algorithm, which simulates a scheduling process based on medical routes and also includes its inverse version. The next is a Mixed-Integer Linear programming (MILP) model. In this case, information is centralized, and patients are scheduled based on their requirements, minimizing delays in their appointments and/or medical treatments. These methodologies are compared with the current mode of assignment used. To test the previously proposed solutions, data provided by the Arturo López Perez Foundation (FALP) will be used.

Water scarcity has led to the search for sustainable methods of wastewater management in recent years. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of wastewater management through a systematic literature review, examining thirty articles published between 2012 and 2022. The main contribution lies in the in-depth analysis conducted on the management wastewater supply chain, focusing on the dimensions of sustainability studied, how they are addressed in models, the types of decisions made, and the methodologies employed. This provides insight into how sustainability has been approached in wastewater management while highlighting areas for improvement and future research.A positive trend is observed in related research, indicating a growing interest in the topic of sustainable management of wastewater supply chains up to the year 2020. To assess sustainability, optimization, and case studies were predominantly utilized, with evolutionary algorithms commonly employed in optimizations, complemented by uncertainty *** suggestions for future research, it is recommended to include political and technological aspects in the analysis of sustainability. Additionally, integrating methodologies with a greater capacity to incorporate multiple objective functions, along with a case study to illustrate their applicability, would be valuable. Addressing these outstanding issues could contribute to a better understanding of sustainable wastewater management and provide more effective solutions.
