Faced with a scenario where the growth of urban centers is increasing, the BRT system comes as a viable solution to this, enabling the development of functional bus corridors, serving to meet the demand of rapid shifts, especially in areas with high population density. However, to characterize as a system, it is necessary to measure their level of performance in the face of various aspects that are part of his characterization. For this, the article aims to study the main criteria influencers for the development of a performance measurement system for the BRT systems in Brazil, using for this the bibliographic research, technical manuals and expert opinion about the subject, focusing, at the end of this, to reveal these criteria, aiming at the future the elaboration of indicators to facilitate its performance evaluation.

The use of Lean Construction (LC) practices has gradually spread in the construction industry. Accordingly, mechanisms are necessary to evaluate their use so as to facilitate identifying strengths and weaknesses in the LC implementation process. This paper presents a protocol for assessing the use of LC practices, which has distinctive characteristics, such as: (a) assigning weighting factors to each practice, according to their degree of importance as attributed by the perceptions of seven experts;(b) establishing explicit conceptual links between each practice and lean principles, (c) selecting practices to be included in the protocol based on a systematic review of the LC literature;and (d) the use of multiple sources of evidence to carry out the assessment, which increases the credibility of the results. The protocol comprises 103 LC practices, distributed over 15 categories. This paper reports the application of the protocol in a residential building project, which allowed identifying its strengths and weaknesses.

The predicted food shortages have caused the agribusiness to become proeminent in the world scenario. Nowadays those developing countries have shown that agribusiness, driven by the continually-increasing world crave for consumption, is the great business opportunity for continued growth and sure returns. The Brazilian soybean production is spread among various of its States, especially Bahia, Paraná, Mato Grosso e Mato Grosso do Sul. There is, however, much to be done, since the infrastructure for actually selling this produce is sorely lacking, due to problems such as scarcity of roads, lack of transportation alternatives, and of facilities and equipment to provide correct storage for this produce. So, this paper proposes an evaluation of the impact of storage strategy in the competitiveness of soybean-complex in the market. These actions allow a increase soy value in the market. The result was demonstrated by a case study in a soybean farmer, realize that considering a storage strategy, farmer has been grown his profitability in 42%.

The great urban population growth generates several changes in life style, land use, energy demand and consequent environmental pressure. In this way, studies related to environmental sustainability of urban systems and the availability of natural resources are of major importance. EMergy is considered to be a powerful tool to environmental accounting and measures both natural and human resources to generate products and services. The evaluation through eMergy synthesis of cities, states, nations and its base resources provides large scale perspective to evaluation of environmental areas and can help selection of policies for public benefit. This preliminary study applies the eMergy synthesis to evaluate the sustainability of the cities that compose the ABC Paulista, accounting the local free renewable and the purchased resources that give support to the cities.

Brazil responds for an approximately one third of the world's charcoal production, with 90% is used to produce pig iron, iron alloys, among others. Surely, 70% of the charcoal is still produced by traditional handicraft method, with almost half of the firewood from the native forests. The pressure for ecologically correct and self-sustainable production has driven the search for cleaner and more efficient technologies. These can contribute to change the present charcoal production model in Brazil. This paper intends to show the research on a metallic vertical cylinder for a charcoal production unit as a model that can meet the basic requirements of being ecologically correct, socially fair, economically and then be culturally accepted to replace the traditional model. According to the sustainability pillars, this model has shown the possibility of a 25% of firewood saving, pointing out to an economical feasibility, an ecologically correct procedure and then to comply with the Brazilian labor legislation, achieving a socially fair condition for the work force. Finally it was evidenced that the process' crucial point is to burn the dirt smoke generated during the wood's carbonization process and the use of the generated heat for a previous drying of the firewood.

This paper considers the pipeline network design problem (PND) in ethanol transportation, with a view to providing robust and efficient computational tools to assist decision makers in evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of ethanol pipeline network designs. Such tools must be able to address major design decisions and technical characteristics, and estimate network construction and operation costs to any time horizon. The specific context in which the study was conducted was the ethanol industry in Sao Paulo. Five instances were constructed using pseudo-real data to test the methodologies developed.

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) with Variable Speed Limits (VSL) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Recent studies in a macroscopic simulator have shown optimal and feedback MTFC potential to improve traffic conditions. In this paper, local feedback MTFC is applied in microscopic simulation for an on-ramp merge bottleneck. Traffic behavior reveals important aspects that had not been previously captured in macroscopic simulation. Mainly, the more realistic VSL application at specific points instead of along an entire freeway section produces a slower traffic response to speed limit changes. In addition, the nonlinear speed limit-flow relation observed in the microscopic model is more pronounced than what was observed at the macroscopic level. After appropriate modifications in the control law significant improvements in traffic conditions were obtained.
