This paper aims at develop a tool - ProdutMap - to aid product design based on the organization of the knowledge involved in the early stages of the design progress. ProductMap organizes knowledge in classes and categories, allowing freshman designers to explore the broad range of prototypes and solutions for the problems associated to the product to be designed. The products and the associated knowledge categories are represented using a visual structure called mind map that allow designers to establish relations among different functions and solutions. This knowledge structure is built considering function, materials, manufacturing processes, design solutions, components, etc. and each topic is linked to the others according to the purpose or product similarity. Chairs are used as an example of ProductMap functionality, showing the similarity of design solutions between two chairs and compare other attributes related to furniture conception.

This paper describes the issue of knowledge management in the product design activity using as an example the Baja project: the project of a small car conducted by a team of engineering students with the advice of a faculty member of Mechanical and production engineering Department of Escola Politécnica of UFRJ. This paper aims at explain how engineering knowledge is shared among the design team members and which are the main knowledge management enablers used by students in these projects. A survey was done with ten Brazilian Baja teams and a questionnaire was applied to fifty three students interviewed during two Baja competitions during the year of 2008. Students were asked to respond to questions, which content was able to identify if a formal practice of knowledge management was being used by the team. Data collected was treated by simple tools of descriptive statistics, and the results showed that some activities have a strong correlation with others, considering their contribution for the knowledge conversion process established within the group. The paper introduction presents some concepts related to the design process and its relation with knowledge acquisition, and the integration of different universes of specialization. Section two is dedicated to discuss knowledge management, knowledge conversion and the nature of engineering knowledge. In this section is discussed which practices enable knowledge management and knowledge conversion in the design process. Section three describes the Baja project and the main issues related to knowledge transfer among participants with different technical background. Section four presents the survey done with Baja teams and the main results of knowledge conversion are analyzed, considering the list of practices established in section 2. Section five comments the results and presents some conclusions.

This study proposes to identify and select indicators contributing to the evaluation of the levels of sustainability in the family agriculture production of castor beans in the state of Paraíba. To achieve these objectives, we used the Pressure-State-Impact-Response (PSIR) model, which describes the human activities, processes and standards that impact on sustainable development. The methodology was based on Descriptive and Exploratory research applied in a case study of an agricultural cooperative. The primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews with representatives of public organs and agriculturists. Based on the reality and the problems that affecting the production system, a total 47 indicators were set, classified and tailored to the specifics of the activity, considering the different dimensions of sustainability. The results showed that the indicators selected enabled the systemic analysis of agricultural activity, facilitating the identification of the positive and negative aspects that influence the productive sector, and also propose possible solutions and improvements to stimulating the local oleaginous production.

The S?o Paulo sanitation sector generates annually great revenues, becoming a great attraction to investors. Improve results and expand the customer base is responsibility of the company's commercial area. Increase the sales has become a great challenge for the managers. One of the ways to increase the business is through the effective use of large amounts of information stored on corporate systems. In this context the Business Intelligence emerged as a key differentiator, since this architecture allow to access and explore the information contained in corporate databases. The Enterprise Architecture provides a set of best practices focused on improving the performance by structuring the information and integrated views of strategy, business processes, systems and technologies. The aim of this paper is to analyze the BI application in conjunction with Enterprise Architecture in the commercial area of a sanitation company to identify the contribution of the association of these two architectures.

This paper is focused on product development planning and the growing role that intellectual property is assuming in the technological strategies of the companies. Planning is one of the main phases of the design process as its interface with the enterprise business strategies is a driver for the definition of the technological strategies that will guide the search and the selection of ideas for product development. Powerful methodologies based on the patent system, some like TRIZ, have been used to obtain relevant information from the system thus fomenting new ideas for evaluation and selection, mapping the technology evolution or supporting other strategic activities. Considering the strategic dimension assumed by patents at the planning phase, this paper aims to use the patent information available on products and TRIZ tools as an analytical method of product development strategies. An example focusing aerogenerators is presented in order to evaluate the proposed perspective.

With the appearance of several non-classical logics notably over the past decades, one natural question arises: What is the algebraic version of these logics? In this paper, we discuss some applications of the concept of Curry algebra for algebraisation of some paraconsistent, paracomplete and non-alethic logics. Such concept is also correlated with some fundamental themes in logic, such as computability, constructability, topology and many other basic branches. Copyright © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The aim of this paper is to present a study of brain EEG waves through a new ANN (artificial neural networks) based on Paraconsistent Annotated Evidential Logic, Eτ, which is capable of manipulating concepts like impreciseness, inconsistency, and paracompleteness in a nontrivial manner. As an application, the Paraconsistent Artificial Neural Network (PANN) proved capable of recognising children with Dyslexia with Kappa index at a rate of 80%. Strategic management using VoIP technology: A case study In a call center company

The ability of voice transmission over TCP/IP package, also called Voice over IP or VoIP, allows voice integration and data in just one structure;this enables a very cheap communication among remote locations. The main goal of this article is to analyze and demonstrate VOIP applications in the corporate market networks, their advantages and applications on the feasibility of tooling use in the corporate world. The method applied in this article is qualitative, semi-structured as a unique case study. The studied company is called KONTAK, a Brazilian organization of the call center segment located in the east region of "São Paulo". Intrinsic to the business, the major operation costs are related to telephony management. The results show a reduction in the calling costs among branches, customers and suppliers obtained after the implementation of this technology, as well as a better control of operational processes and organization management strategy in terms of the voice and data technology management. The business feasibility is evidenced by the return on investment (ROI) reached by the company due to this technology.
