Sustainability in practice: Analyzing environmental, social and governance practices in leading Latin American organizations' reports

Sustainable development is crucial for the competitive advantage of industries. However, implementing this business model faces challenges that can impact its integration and compromise the adoption of actions to address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues that are of interest to stakeholders. To date, no in-depth study has presented the relationship between ESG issues and practical actions employed for sustainable development in companies within the Latin American context. Therefore, this article aims to evaluate the relationships between the main ESG issues and the actions applied to develop this theme in the Latin American industrial context, highlighting the main barriers, opportunities, and implications for this integration. As a methodology, a documentary analysis of 79 reports from Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina was conducted using the content analysis method. This analysis highlighted central concerns such as climate change, water management, waste management, biodiversity, local communities, diversity, and inclusion. Additionally, a trend of ESG thematic dissemination was identified, which is in an early stage of maturity and lacks studies to quantify and diagnose the environmental impacts of Latin American industries. These findings directly impact the empirical evidence of how the Latin American industry is neglecting social issues, is still developing studies to quantify its environmental impacts, and strongly adheres to the concept and theme of ESG. The conclusions of this study highlight three main points: (i) From 2018 to 2022, 47% of material topics were related to at least one ESG pillar, with a predominance of the environmental dimension, (ii) there was a trend of increased adherence to ESG and improvements in the materiality of reports, and (iii) it is recommended to enhance indicators, accelerate the sustainable transition, and integrate ESG themes into supplier selection and workplace safety to strengthen sus

Gain scheduling has been successfully applied in many different areas due to the positive results achieved when applied to nonlinear control. Its utilization enables the controller to respond rapidly to changes in operating conditions. This study demonstrates the application of gain scheduling to a SMAR didactic level system to implement adaptive control. The results exhibited a strong response with minor errors using a Proportional and Integral (PI) controller, which facilitated the development of two generic equations for determining the values of K p (proportional gain) and K i (integral gain) based on the desired set point.

Set-Point Tracking MPC with Avoidance Features

This work proposes a finite-horizon optimal control strategy to solve the tracking problem while providing avoidance features to the closed-loop system. Inspired by the set-point tracking model predictive control (MPC) framework, the central idea of including artificial variables into the optimal control problem is considered. This approach allows us to add avoidance features into the set-point tracking MPC strategy without losing the properties of an enlarged domain of attraction and feasibility insurances in the face of any changing reference. Besides, the artificial variables are considered together with an avoidance cost functional to establish the basis of the strategy, maintaining the recursive feasibility property in the presence of a previously unknown number of regions to be avoided. It is shown that the closed-loop system is recursively feasible and input-to-state-stable under the mild assumption that the avoidance cost is uniformly bounded over time. Finally, two numerical examples illustrate the controller behavior. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is widely used in electrochemistry, energy sciences, biology, and beyond. Analyzing EIS data is crucial, but it often poses challenges because of the numerous possible equivalent circuit models, the need for accurate analytical models, the difficulties of nonlinear regression, and the necessity of managing large datasets within a unified framework. To overcome these challenges, non-parametric models, such as the distribution of relaxation times (DRT, also known as the distribution function of relaxation times, DFRT), have emerged as promising tools for EIS analysis. For example, the DRT can be used to generate equivalent circuit models, initialize regression parameters, provide a time-domain representation of EIS spectra, and identify electrochemical processes. However, mastering the DRT method poses challenges as it requires mathematical and programming proficiency, which may extend beyond experimentalists’ usual expertise. Post-inversion analysis of DRT data can be difficult, especially in accurately identifying electrochemical processes, leading to results that may not always meet expectations. This article examines non-parametric EIS analysis methods, outlining their strengths and limitations from theoretical, computational, and end-user perspectives, and provides guidelines for their future development. Moreover, insights from survey data emphasize the need to develop a large impedance database, akin to an impedance genome. In turn, software development should target one-click, fully automated DRT analysis for multidimensional EIS spectra interpretation, software validation, and reliability. Particularly, creating a collaborative ecosystem hinged on free software could promote innovation and catalyze the adoption of the DRT method throughout all fields that use impedance data. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.

What is green finance, after all? – Exploring definitions and their implications under the Brazilian biofuel policy (RenovaBio)

Climate change concerns and energy transitions are currently addressing not only energy technologies and innovations to decarbonize economies, but also financial mechanisms to enable such transitions. The concepts of green finance and green investment have expanded in recent years, bringing perspectives to support sustainable projects. In this study, we examine the scientific research in green finance to identify advances, main topics, and policy recommendations. We then explore how green financing can play an important role in supporting the development and implementation of biofuel projects in Brazil. The biofuel policy (RenovaBio) established a carbon market the so-called “Decarbonization Credits” (CBIOs), which is a financial instrument designed to incentivize the production and use of sustainable biofuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The findings suggest that green finance needs to advance with a clear definition of their requirements and standards not to fund non-green projects and projects that overlook social and environmental sustainability for economic benefits, and to enable investors to better assess risks and opportunities of their investments. Regarding green finance for biofuel, while some studies suggest that biofuels could play a role in the transition to a green economy, others warn of the environmental costs associated with large-scale production, which can lead to negative impacts on biodiversity, and land-water use. It is expected that the green finance issue in Brazil will find fertile ground in the biofuel sector. However, this will depend on sustainable agriculture practices, as well as on designing the RenovaBio program in such a way that is transparent, accountable, and socially and environmentally responsible. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Circular Economy Public Policies: A Systematic Literature Review

The traditional form of production is called linear economy, which consists of extracting, transforming, producing, consuming and discarding, and is threatened by a series of factors. Among them, we can list the increase in the world population, which went from 3.3 billion people in 1965 to 7.79 billion in 2020, which will consequently lead to an increase in the consumer class. One of the philosophies for meeting this challenge is the Circular Economy (CE), which provides the economic system with an alternative flow model. CE is seen as a new form of sustainability and has gained popularity in the scarcity of resources, the circulation of materials and the facilitation of the reuse and recycling paradigm. Some countries, concerned about the impact of the linear economy on the environment, have proposed specific laws that address the shift from the traditional mode of production to a circular approach. Germany and Japan were pioneers in promoting CE in concrete policies. Followed by China in 2008. Given this scenario, this study aimed to raise which public policies were objects of study in the period 2017 to 2021 and which tools were used to analyze the policies. A systematic review of the literature was carried out, with articles searched in the ScienceDirect and WoS databases, using the descriptors: Circular Economy and Policies. The Sample consisted of 29 articles. The study identified an increase in initiatives to seek circularity through the formulation of public policies. Many countries are demanding more sustainable production processes, with an emphasis on energy savings and fewer carbon emissions. For this, a waste treatment policy is an initial step to seek greater degrees of circularity. The most used tool to study these policies was Framework 9R. Because with it you have an idea of what initial stage the country is in and what stage can be pursued in the future.

Oil palm fronds and trunks leave a lot of lignocellulosic residues in the agricultural field. Due to its highly complex chemical composition, the lignocellulosic matrix is difficult to break down. This study aims to investigate the effects of chemo-physical pretreatment of oil palm fronds and trunks with ultrasound in a low alkali concentration solution. The microstructure and thermal stability of the oil palm frond and trunk were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a thermogravimetric (TG) method. SEM analysis proved the deterioration of the lignocellulose matrix of the ultrasound-assisted alkali pretreatment compared to raw. According to the TG results, the decomposition temperature curve of treated oil palm shifted to the right side after 50 percent mass degradation, indicating more excellent thermal stability than untreated oil palm biomass. On the other hand, at a temperature above 350 °C, the pretreated biomass has less thermal stability. It has been demonstrated that a combination of low chemical concentration and physical pretreatments can disrupt the oil palm lignocellulose microstructure and potentially shorten the time required to achieve maximum hydrolysis efficiency. Furthermore, ultrasonication power of 300 W, frequency of 40 kHz, temperature of 80 °C, and time of 30 min in combination with low alkali-based pretreatment in oil palm residue will be helpful in applications requiring greater thermal stability. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. The costs in the health area with patients cared for and admitted to health institutions is a matter of debate that has been carried out by academic leaders and researchers around the world;those concerned with an economic generation of sustainable industrial products and services. Radio frequency identification technology helps in tracking and controlling stocks and logistics systems, in order to reduce losses and reduce operating losses. The study aims to analyze the use of radiofrequency identification and rapid response code in medical portables, in order to improve the logistical management in healthcare. The research was developed through a literature review, using the Web of Science database. A total of 259 texts were retrieved based on the following search equation: "(Hospital and radio frequency identification device)". Of these, 239 abstracts were selected for reading, 20 were excluded for not meeting the objectives, leaving 219, of which 48 were read. The top ten articles were selected for analysis. Research period was between February and August 2021. In the results, the authors of this study present a table with the selected articles in order to organize the findings regarding the applicability and usefulness of radiofrequency identification. The discussion showed that there are ways and strategies for using technology in the supply chain in various health contexts. It is concluded that the adoption of radiofrequency identification in logistics provide promising health outcomes, although there are still some surmountable barriers that need further studies. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Since COVID-19 became a global pandemic, improving air quality has been increasingly important to mitigate the transmission of pathogenic aerosols. Air filters such as MERV filters have been widely used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to clean inlet air. In recent years, ultraviolet (UV) light has been used for decontamination and disinfection in various applications, including indoor air cleaning, e.g., upper-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). There are a variety of air purification devices available in the market, with some incorporating UV technology. However, many of them are not formally tested and certified for their effectiveness in mitigating airborne pathogens and particulate matter. The research's objectives are to (1) evaluate, design, and upgrade an existing air filtration device (~2,200 CFM) with the addition of UV-C lamps;(2) test the effectiveness of the upgraded device in mitigating airborne pathogens (bacteria) and particulate matter (PM) in real scenario (poultry farm). The testing results of air quality are expressed in particular matter (PM) levels and colony-forming units (CFUs). The preliminary data showed that both MERV-8 & MERV 13 and UV-C lamps can inactivate up to 100% of airborne bacteria, and the device can remove over 95% of total PM after treatment in a ~150-layer room. © 2022 ASABE. This study aims to analyze the reasons that motivate Brazilian companies to implement Quality Management Systems, according to ISO 9001:2015 requirements. Based on information collected in the literature, a questionnaire was developed and answered by professionals that work with the mentioned standard in their companies. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted with the collected data to group the validated variables into two constructs that present the most part of information variance. These constructs were entitled “internal improvements related motives” and “market related motives”. The findings of this research confirm and complement previous studies performed in Brazil and in other countries. © 2021 American Society for Quality.
