In the labor-intensive construction industry, workers are frequently exposed to manual handling tasks involving forceful exertions and awkward postures. As a result, construction workers are at about a 16 percent higher risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) than workers in other industries. A biomechanical model-based musculoskeletal stress analysis is one of the widely used methods to identify the risk of WMSDs during occupational tasks. However, the use of biomechanical analysis has been limited to only laboratory experiments due to the difficulty of collecting motion data required for biomechanical models under real conditions. To reflect postural variations when performing construction tasks, an effective and easily accessible mean that enables us to conduct biomechanical analysis under real conditions is required. To address this issue, we propose a motion-data-driven biomechanical analysis by enabling automatic processes to convert motion data from vision-based motion capture into available data for representing motions in biomechanical analysis tools. We conduct a case study on masonry work to determine the feasibility of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed approach has the potential to assess an individual's motions and to provide personalized feedback for the purpose of reducing biomechanical loads and WMSD risk in real workplaces. © ASCE 2014.

Identifying necessary and helpful information in context of a concrete task remains a challenge, even though different information and data management systems are in use to support product development and production processes. This paper addresses the key challenge of providing contextual information of a high quality (e.g. in defined maturity). With current systems, the user (the product developer) is forced to transfer a need for specific information into an appropriate query: He/she must have a well-defined overview on existing information management systems, each providing specific search possibilities. As a possible solution, this paper presents two joined concepts: Knowledge-Briefs are proposed to be used to represent product development related knowledge in a condensed manner (similar to design guidelines). These Knowledge-Briefs are based on predefined templates, providing sections as information containers. The Knowledge-Briefs are linked to a so-called Context-Driven Access (the second concept). The core idea of this approach is to proactively provide supporting information, based on an autonomously identified context. To capture such context an information model is proposed, based on description languages. This way, users will be supported with one or more relevant Knowledge-Briefs throughout their work processes, which cover relevant information for the actual tasks they are working on.

The goal of this paper is to show a study to evaluate the possibility of using ontologies to support maintenance procedures in IT equipment in a small power company. The aim is to improve the degree of reliability in detection of potential failures and defects in maintenance processes of information technology critical assets, trying to obtain less downtime of services that they provide. The methodological procedures used in this study were literature review, to present the modeling concepts of knowledge focused on ontologies creation and state of the art in building of field procedures describing the steps from initial drafting of ontology finishing with their tests. The results demonstrate that it is viable to utilize this technique, where the network equipment that keeps critical services require high level of availability on meeting the needs of the corporation.

Representatives from seven West Coast port authorities and the International Institute for Sustainable Seaports (I2S2) have been developing tools to integrate sustainable best practices into port planning, design and construction of marine industrial development projects. Building on material developed by the Port of Long Beach, the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, Portland, Vancouver, Tacoma, and Seattle have worked collaboratively to create flexible sustainable design and construction guidelines for port infrastructure projects. The guidelines are intended to help ports identify opportunities to go beyond compliance in practicing sustainable industrial development. In addition to creating an initial product, these ports have recognized the importance of establishing an ongoing collaboration to update the tools and share experiences. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is the underground (UG) mine which is located on the East ErstbergSkarn System (EESS) of Grasberg-Ertzberg Au-Cu district in Tembagapura Papua. The DOZ mine is operated by block cave mine method with average of daily production is 80 ktpd ore. Geological information is the important information required for planning, developing, and monitoring the underground mine. This project was initiated in 2007 using the commercial database management software. The objective of the project is to establish the common and centralized underground geology data as well as improve the information transparency. Geological data recording in every draw points is to collect information of rock types proportion, grade and dilution estimates, water condition, clay contents. Solid data integration would help in 3D block model versus the drawn material reconciliation as well as mine planning processes. The first phase of UG geology database management system was successfully to accelerate the creation of routine geological report and improve data and report quality. The second phase of this project was designed to integrate the geo-science data for UG operation support. The paper will be devoted to the management system of geological data collected from production in order to map the characteristics of rock. This may subsequently be used in order to improve all processes including mine planning, production scheduler, draw order, mud rush potential anticipation and mud rush mitigation.

Maximising economies of scale in individualised production is a vital issue for producing companies in high wage countries. A decisive enabler for this is the management of product and process complexity by systematic standardisation. Due to the strong and far-reaching impact of complexity on the value added chain, its management requires an integrative consideration of the entire product and production system. The following paper introduces a methodology facing this challenge. The core element of this methodology is an integrative and complexity-focused assessment model. This assessment model has been validated experimentally by analysing key company data from more than 50 German toolmaking firms. Findings of this empirical investigation are presented in this paper. © 2011 Research Institute for Ope.
