Optimizing large-scale emergency medical system operations on highways using the hypercube queuing model

In this study, we present a series of well-known optimization methods to address two related decisions associated with the design of large-scale ambulance operations on highways: (1) The question of location, and (2) the issue of districting. As a result of computer storage and runtime constraints, previous approaches have only considered small-to-moderate scale problem scenarios, generally employing exact hypercube queuing models integrated into optimization procedures. We overcome these limitations here by embedding a fast and accurate hypercube approximation algorithm adapted for partial backup dispatch policies in single- and multi-start greedy heuristics. The proposed methods are tested on small-to-large-scale problems involving up to 100 ambulances. The results suggest that our approach is a viable alternative for the analysis and configuration of large-scale highway emergency medical systems, providing reasonable accuracy and affordable run times. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

Basically, EOQ inventory model is well known approach using for arrangement of spare parts stocking policy. But EOQ model cannot be used for explanation about the separation between high and low cost material that is not available to be the reference boundary between high and low. Thus, the interesting of the separation between high and low cost spare part will be issued in order to fulfill this niche. Meaningfully, this is the study of finding the representative line which is used for classifying either high or low cost spare part. The aftermath of this result can be in accordingly applied to the inventory model until entirely reduced parts as zero inventories. Furthermore, the case study is emphasized and thought by based on slow moving item. And the extension of EOQ model will be applied in order to meet discrete demand.

Contingency factors and globalization phenomena are forcing companies to revise the way they conceive and manage their operations network. operations strategic management systems should develop specific design requirements to deal with a complex and changing environment, that is, operations strategy plans should be continuously assed and updated. This paper frame a discussion based on operations strategy and performance measurement framework. Performance measurement roles are revised in order to assess their alignment to new design requirements for operations strategic management. Based on a set of updated performance measurement systems roles, a case study protocol is developed and applied to manufacturing and service companies. Although classical roles as performance monitoring and control are still the main focus of operations performance measurement systems, evidences collected show a growing use of these management systems for continuous improvement and change management processes.

Maximising economies of scale in individualised production is a vital issue for producing companies in high wage countries. A decisive enabler for this is the management of product and process complexity by systematic standardisation. Due to the strong and far-reaching impact of complexity on the value added chain, its management requires an integrative consideration of the entire product and production system. The following paper introduces a methodology facing this challenge. The core element of this methodology is an integrative and complexity-focused assessment model. This assessment model has been validated experimentally by analysing key company data from more than 50 German toolmaking firms. Findings of this empirical investigation are presented in this paper.

In times of shorter product-life-cycles and new restrictions the requirements for industrial buildings steadily increase. The need of flexibility in utilisation of industrial buildings is rising and quick changes of production process need to be feasible, for instance if a logistic centre will be used as laboratory. Furthermore, the government lays a stronger emphasis on sustainability and efficiency of modern industrial buildings. Current structures, processes and services in the construction industry are not suitable for the new requirements. This paper presents an approach which tries to handle the named complexity during the development process as well as an innovative product service system for the construction industry.

This paper explores two important themes in the implementation of RFID in supply chain management: (1) analyzing differences between actual (perceived) and potential (expected) key benefits to see if there are benefit shortfalls for the key performances;and (2) performing a two-dimensional expectation- perception analysis (EPA) for the purpose of identifying competitive niche and strategically allocating and adjusting the company's resources. Empirical data were collected through surveys of executives of selected Taiwan based companies who had experienced RFID adoption in the supply chain practices. Finally, managerial implications and suggestions were provided for companies and industries that may be considering the adoption of RFID in SCM.

In this paper, the bullwhip effect in a two-stage supply chain with one supplier and two retailers is measured. The customer demand is assumed to be followed an AR(1) model and is forecasted at each retailer by using the minimum mean square error forecasting method. In addition, the retailers employ the base stock inventory policy. Among the findings of this research, it is interesting to note that the bullwhip effect in supply chains will be minimized as the retailers have the same market share. ©2010 IEEE.
