The Department of Systems engineering at the United States Military Academy (USMA) offers an undergraduate major in engineering management. This multi-disciplinary major is accredited by the Accreditation Board of engineering and Technology (ABET) of the engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC). All engineering management majors at USMA start their studies with an introductory course in engineering Design and Systems management. In this course, students are introduced to the Systems engineering and management Process (SEMP), which is the foundational problem solving approach used and reinforced throughout the curriculum. This paper describes the engineering management curriculum at the USMA, and shows how the sequencing of courses enhances students' abilities as problem solvers using the SEMP. Students take courses in Systems engineering, engineering management, another engineering discipline of their choosing, Financial management and Personnel management. The program of study culminates with students solving a real-world problem following the framework of the SEMP for a Department of Defense or industry client as part of a year-long Capstone Design course. Students work in small teams of four under the direction of a Ph.D. faculty member in applying the concepts learned throughout the curriculum. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Remote experimentation is the process of conducting real lab experiments without being physically in contact with lab devices. Recently, the development of Internet technologies fostered the spread of online laboratories, and significant benefits helped establish remote experimentation as a potential substitute to real experimentation. Internetworking lab experiments usually involve very expensive hardware;and providing remote access to this type of laboratories is highly desired, especially when a large number of students must share a limited set of devices. Very few remote internetworking laboratories have previously been implemented, and they had several drawbacks. In this paper, we discuss our design of a Remote Internetworking Laboratory which provided access to the internetworking lab at the American University of Beirut (AUB). The uniqueness of our approach is that it uses VLANs (Virtual LANs) to build network topologies, a technique that separates network subnets into different broadcast domains before allowing users to configure each lab device. The proposed scheme overcomes the limitations of other designs, and allows users to build any desired network topology and configure the lab devices in real-time. Many technical and educational features were integrated into the system, and possible enhancements were suggested based on several evaluation criteria. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

We consider N-stage serial production/distribution systems with stationary demand at the most downstream stage. First, we study classical Clark-Scarf model with both average cost and discounted cost criteria. The optimal echelon base-stock levels are obtained in terms of only probabilistic distributions of leadtime demand. This analysis yields a novel approach for developing bounds and simple heuristics for optimal echelon base-stock polices. In addition to deriving known bounds, we develop several new upper bounds for both average cost and discounted cost models. Second and more important, we extend this idea to a more general model with two transportation modes between stages: the regular and expedited shippings (Lawson and Porteus (2000)). The optimal inventory policy for this system is known to be echelon base-stock policy, which can be computed through minimizing 2N nested convex functions recursively. We again develop simple newsvendor type of lower and upper bounds for the optimal control parameters, as well as a simple near optimal heuristic. Extensive numerical results show that the heuristics for both models perform well. The bounds and heuristic enhance the accessibility and implementability of the optimal policies in supply chains with single and dual transportation modes.

Cleveland has over 20 years of experience in the planning and management of a wide variety of functions including business process reengineering and IT security.

We address the performance of a repairable system that is required to perform a sequence of equally spaced, identical missions with breaks between missions. The system is series-parallel in structure, and component repair can only be performed during breaks between missions. Due to limitations on maintenance resources, it may be impossible to make all necessary repairs before the next mission. Such situations require the use of selective maintenance, the process of identifying the subset of maintenance actions to perform from a set of desirable maintenance actions. We build upon previous research in selective maintenance by addressing decisions related to establishing capacities for the limited maintenance resources. We model mission-to-mission changes in maintenance resource capacity, and we develop a methodology for establishing constant resource capacities for a sequence of missions. Finally, we develop a methodology for integrating redundancy allocation and maintenance resource allocation decisions.

The Relationship Between EDI and Supplier Reliability

作者： Steve V. Walton Ann S. Marucheck Steve Walton is an Assistant Professor of Management at Baylor University. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Management from Clemson University and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Walton's research interests include supplier management supplier‐oriented information technologies and environmental issues in materials management and production. He was recently recognized as an Outstanding Teacher in Baylor's MBA program. Ann Marucheck is a Professor of Operations Management and Associate Dean for Ph.D. programs in the Kenan‐Flagler Business School of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a B.S. in mathematics and an M.S.E. and a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Oklahoma. Her research interests include the use of information technology in operations and professional services business process reengineering and manufacturing strategy.

Past studies into EDI have shown, mostly by examples, that EDI can be used as a supplier management tool to achieve improved supplier reliability by providing both trading partners with better information. This, in turn, leads to closer supplier relationships, fewer late orders, and a decrease in problems with delivered quality, quantity, or mix. The research discussed in this article tests this contention by examining EDI usage patterns and supplier reliability in a sample of 30 companies that transmit purchase orders to their suppliers via EDI. The study found that the quality of delivered products and materials, as well as the delivery of the correct item/mix, is related significantly to (1) the buyer's experience using EDI as a tool in supplier management; (2) the willingness of both the buyer and supplier to share sensitive production and capacity information; (3) the acquisition of the EDI system; and (4) the level of EDI integration with other computer applications. Integrating the findings of this study with past research suggests that EDI can be used as part of an overall supplier management strategy to improve supplier performance and reduce the cost associated with materials acquisition.

In this study we propose a method to analyze the configuration and operation of the emergency medical systems (EMS) on highways. Due to the stochastic nature of these systems, especially in the arrival and assistance processes of the emergency calls, we apply the hypercube queuing model to evaluate the performance of the system. This is a well-known model in the location literature, which is based on spatially distributed queuing theory. The EMS on highways operate within a particular dispatching policy which considers that only some ambulances in the system can travel to a certain region and two ambulances can be dispatched to respond to the same call (multiple dispatch). Since the hypercube model is a descriptive model, we develop a hypercube embedded genetic algorithm to create a prescriptive model. This model can support decisions at the strategic level. For example, the optimal dimensions of the primary response areas to each server, as well as decisions on the operational level, and, the optimal dispatch policy of ambulances to respond to the emergency calls. In particular, we apply the model to study an EMS on a Brazilian highway.

The Internet has become an important medium for effective marketing and efficient operations for many institutions. Visitors of a particular web site leave behind valuable information on their preferences, requirements, and demands regarding the offered products and/or services. Understanding these requirements online, i.e., during a particular visit, is both a difficult technical challenge and a tremendous business opportunity. Web sites that can provide effective online navigation suggestions to their visitors can exploit the potential inherent in the data such visits generate every day. However, identifying, collecting, and maintaining the necessary knowledge that navigation suggestions are based on is far from trivial. We propose a methodology for acquiring and maintaining this knowledge efficiently using data mart and web mining technology. Its effectiveness has been shown in an application for a bank's web site. We optimize replacement time for a system that fails according to an increasing failure-rate distribution. The problem has a finite horizon, and our goal is to minimize expected total maintenance cost. The associated objective function is piece-wise convex but discontinuous, and we develop an algorithm to optimize replacement time. We illustrate our approach on a real problem from the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company in Bay City, Texas, USA.

The kind of global village that is developing today demands a new 'communication culture' to reshape the upcoming civilization of tomorrow. Communicating with various consumers and types of people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds would surely be an uphill task for the trades. Using the same language, same framework of communication and the same value systems for catering to the needs of different demographic groups around the world and different segments of consumers would give birth to a 'non-communication' network. To overcome this undesirable situation in global communication, the only way out is to test the message contents 'ergonomically' before communicating the messages to the end-users of the products. Web pages and, therefore, the messages for consumers are designed by the software specialists whose training and experience is primarily technically oriented. On the other hand, the aesthetic appeal and ability to visualize the product from the end-users' viewpoint is critically important. It is this latter type of organization that defines the underlying dialogue and model of the system. Present work analyzed the Web-pages in terms of typing contents, memory load, definition of structure, software design and CAD tools applications. The paper discusses a study of the Web-pages of three multinational companies (Proctor & Gamble, Nokia and Nestlé) involved in consumer goods and evaluated their message contents from an ergonomic point of view. Results indicated that the Web page designs of the three global consumer item companies are statistically significantly different from each other. The analysis revealed that much remains to be done in these Web-pages to make them 'ergonomically fit' for end-users. The paper concludes with the implications of its findings and puts forth the scope for further work.. © 2005 IEEE.
