This study demonstrates how life cycle analysis could be utilized along with other criteria to make an informative decision choosing between different renewable energy sources. The decision framework for a 1 MW solar photovoltaic system and a 1 MW wind turbine system is proposed. Based on a lifetime analysis of 25 years and an emissions time span of 100 years, the operation and maintenance analysis, as well as an economic and efficiency evaluation, the solar photovoltaic energy system was rated higher a more favorable in both environmental impact and maintenance. Additionally, it was concluded that if an investor or stakeholders is considering the amount of profit return to be the most important, then the wind turbine system is the ideal option as it has a high return value on investment.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a comprehensive literature review on the practices and challenges in managing waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in smart cities. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was conducted using the Methodi Ordinatio. Articles published between 2012 and 2022 were analyzed, totaling 149 references, of which 30 were included in the final review. Findings Emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data and artificial intelligence (AI) are frequently highlighted as promising solutions for efficient e-waste management. Governance models and public policies are widely recognized as crucial for the successful implementation of WEEE management practices in smart cities. Originality/value This study underscores the role of advanced technologies, such as IoT and AI, in enhancing urban mobility and WEEE management. Key challenges include information security, privacy, interoperability, costs and sustainability. The findings reveal a convergence between smart cities and WEEE management, fostering the circular economy and the recovery of valuable materials.

Hybrid energy projects are gaining global interest due to their potential to promote sustainable development. This study addresses a gap in the literature by proposing a stochastic model that assesses the economic feasibility of a hybrid energy system combining wind, photovoltaic generation, and battery storage. Unlike traditional deterministic approaches, the model incorporates uncertainties in key financial and operational variables, improving decision-making in real-world conditions. The optimization framework integrates Design of Experiments (DoE), Response Surface Methodology (RSM), and the Desirability function to balance economic return and financial risk. By maximizing the mean and minimizing the variance of the Net Present Value (NPV), the model identifies an optimal system configuration with 92% wind energy, a demand level of 230 kWh/month, and lithium-ion battery storage. This approach reduces computational complexity and enhances hybrid system viability in regions with strong wind resources, providing a valuable tool for investors and policymakers in sustainable energy planning. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly proposed seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) intended to ensure sustainable development worldwide at the economic, environmental, and social levels. SDGs are now being used by some corporations in formulating and expressing business strategies. However, assessing the effects of corporate activities and products regarding their contribution to SDGs is difficult. In this paper, we have developed a method for linking life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) with the SDGs and calculating the contribution to SDG achievement. An essential part of this approach is the weighting of LCSA impact categories, which is typically done using equal weighting. This weighting method enables compensation of negative contributions by positive contributions in different impact categories but results in ambiguity in the results. This article identifies alternative weighting methods, integrates them into a computational approach, and determines their influence on the SDG contribution scores. The analysis shows that the use of alternative weights changes SDG contribution scores. However, the same product always has the highest SDG contribution score, regardless of the weighting method used. Nonetheless, the recommendations for action with regard to the total product alternatives would change depending on the weighting method. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. This paper reviews the literature on additive manufacturing (AM) technologies and equipment, and spare parts classification criteria to propose a systematic process for selecting spare parts which are suitable for AM. This systematic process identifies criteria that can be used to select spare parts that are suitable for AM. The review found that there is limited research that addresses identifying processes for spare parts selection for AM, even though companies have identified this to be a key challenge in adopting AM. Seven areas for future research are identified relating to the methodology of spare parts selection for AM, processes for cross-functional integration in selecting spare parts for AM, broadening the spare parts portfolio that is suitable for AM (by considering usage of AM in conjunction with conventional technologies), and potential impact of AM on product modularity and integrality. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The growing sophistication of cyberattacks exposes small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to a widening range of security risks. As these threats evolve in complexity, the need for advanced security measures becomes increasingly pressing. This necessitates a proactive approach to defending against potential cyber intrusions. Emerging technologies, such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and Zero Trust security framework, offer crucial tools for strengthening the digital infrastructure of SMBs. The Zero Trust architecture (ZTA) holds significant promise as a critical strategy for protecting SMBs. While existing literature explores the implementation of ZTA in various business settings, discussions specifically addressing the financial, human resource, and capability limitations of SMBs remain scarce. Given the vital role of SMBs in the global economy, this research offers a valuable opportunity to bridge this gap and assist researchers and practitioners in enhancing the cybersecurity of SMBs through ZTA adoption by examining and classifying potential risks that may arise during the pre- and post-deployment phases of ZTA implementation within SMBs. The risks, benefits, and challenges of ZTA adoption are introduced from the unique perspective of SMBs. Practical solutions and mitigation strategies will be provided to address the identified ZT risks and streamline the migration process for SMBs. The findings of that research showed that ZTA will bolster the cybersecurity posture and reduce the cyber risk for SMBs only if they address its associated risks effectively. Future research directions underscore the need for more research to help SMBs migrate to ZTA and mitigate the risks it may pose. © 2025 The Author(s). The traditional form of production is called linear economy, which consists of extracting, transforming, producing, consuming and discarding, and is threatened by a series of factors. Among them, we can list the increase in the world population, which went from 3.3 billion people in 1965 to 7.79 billion in 2020, which will consequently lead to an increase in the consumer class. One of the philosophies for meeting this challenge is the Circular Economy (CE), which provides the economic system with an alternative flow model. CE is seen as a new form of sustainability and has gained popularity in the scarcity of resources, the circulation of materials and the facilitation of the reuse and recycling paradigm. Some countries, concerned about the impact of the linear economy on the environment, have proposed specific laws that address the shift from the traditional mode of production to a circular approach. Germany and Japan were pioneers in promoting CE in concrete policies. Followed by China in 2008. Given this scenario, this study aimed to raise which public policies were objects of study in the period 2017 to 2021 and which tools were used to analyze the policies. A systematic review of the literature was carried out, with articles searched in the ScienceDirect and WoS databases, using the descriptors: Circular Economy and Policies. The Sample consisted of 29 articles. The study identified an increase in initiatives to seek circularity through the formulation of public policies. Many countries are demanding more sustainable production processes, with an emphasis on energy savings and fewer carbon emissions. For this, a waste treatment policy is an initial step to seek greater degrees of circularity. The most used tool to study these policies was Framework 9R. Because with it you have an idea of what initial stage the country is in and what stage can be pursued in the future. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Cloud manufacturing (CM) is an innovative and distributed manufacturing concept enabled by modern tools, offering significant opportunities in the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) environment. Emerging economies (EEs), particularly in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, are increasingly adopting CM to enhance competitiveness, seize new business opportunities, and increase sustainability in operations. Nevertheless, there are many obstacles to overcome while implementing CM in an I4.0 environment. This study identifies, prioritizes, and analyzes the challenges to implementing CM in the RMG sector of an EE like Bangladesh. A two-step approach was employed: first, fourteen challenges were identified through a comprehensive literature review and expert input, then ranked using the Best–Worst Method (BWM). Second, interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) were used to explore the interrelationships among these challenges. The results highlight that “lack of interest from top management”, “usability challenges”, and “inefficient financial management” are the most critical barriers to CM adoption. These findings offer actionable insights for industrial managers and policymakers to address these barriers, facilitate the effective integration of CM, and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This work contributes to the literature by offering a structured methodology for prioritizing challenges and uncovering their interdependencies, facilitating more informed decision-making for sustainable industrial practices. © 2024 The Authors

In all applications involving swarms, it's crucial for the group to achieve its objectives safely and with efficient energy utilisation, while adhering to constraints and meeting mission requirements. This article focuses on addressing the offline path planning problem for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), with a specific emphasis on enhancing energy efficiency. Each UAV in the swarm is guided along a candidate path represented by a Bézier curve, which evolves through a two-step procedure. Firstly, a genetic algorithm (GA) normalises the fitness function to ensure fair comparison of traits. Secondly, a multi-objective swarm-based path planning approach is employed to find the most energy-efficient and safe route for the swarm, meeting predefined criteria. The designed solution paths accommodate the functional and physical limitations of aerial vehicles, while also considering factors such as vessel traffic and weather conditions in the operational area. Simulation examples demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Improved Rank-One-Based Relaxations and Bound Tightening Techniques for the Pooling Problem

The pooling problem is a classical NP-hard problem in the chemical process and petroleum industries. This problem is modeled as a nonlinear, nonconvex network flow problem in which raw materials with different specifications are blended in some intermediate tanks, and mixed again to obtain the final products with desired specifications. The analysis of the pooling problem is quite an active research area, and different exact formulations, relaxations and restrictions are proposed. In this paper, we focus on a recently proposed rank-one-based formulation of the pooling problem. In particular, we study a recurring substructure in this formulation defined by the set of nonnegative, rank-one matrices with bounded row sums, column sums, and the overall sum. We show that the convex hull of this set is second-order cone representable. In addition, we propose an improved compact-size polyhedral outer-approximation and families of valid inequalities for this set. We further strengthen these convexification approaches with the help of various bound tightening techniques specialized to the instances of the pooling problem. Our computational experiments show that the newly proposed polyhedral outer-approximation can improve upon the traditional linear programming relaxations of the pooling problem in terms of the dual bound. Furthermore, bound tightening techniques reduce the computational time spent on both the exact, linear programming and mixed-integer linear programming relaxations. Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
