This work proposes a single-layer finite-horizon optimal control strategy to solve the autonomous navigation problem while accounting for energy efficiency and providing obstacle avoidance feature in cluttered environments with unknown obstacles. Considering the rate capacity effect of electric batteries, the nonlinear state-of-charge behavior is described and included in the optimal control problem to achieve energy-awareness. Besides, artificial potential fields are considered to obtain obstacle avoidance capabilities. The control problem is formulated inspired by the tracking model predictive control framework, and it considers the central idea of including artificial variables into the control problem to obtain a closed-loop system with an enlarged domain of attraction and with feasibility insurance. Finally, numerical results in a case study considering a quadrotor UAV are provided to corroborate the proposed strategy. © 2021 IEEE.

Simulation of inventory management systems in retail stores: A case study

Inventory management has become a key factor in today's world of uncertainty, particularly in the retail sector. Accordingly, there is a high requirement of managing and controlling the inventory with appropriate policies to elevate the organization's performance. In fact, a proper system has to be implemented for monitoring customer demand. This system will, in turn, assist in maintaining the right level of inventory. In this direction, the present research focuses on a retail store and explores a solution for an inventory-related problem experienced by the firm. A simulation model is developed and run for particular merchandise using Arena simulation software. Rigorous experimentation is conducted with the model by altering the inputs/model characteristics, and a more effective system is proposed. Compared with the existing traditional inventory management system, the proposed system will reduce the inventory level by 40% and lost sales by 87%. Furthermore, the proposed system is optimized using the OptQuest module in Arena simulation software. As a result, the inventory level is further reduced by 73% compared to the existing system. Store managers in various organizations may utilize the proposed methodology for improving their inventory management system.

Wasserstein robust classification with fairness constraints

We propose a distributionally robust classification model with a fairness constraint that encourages the classifier to be fair in view of the equality of opportunity criterion. We use a type-1 Wasserstein ambiguity set centered at the empirical distribution to model distributional uncertainty and derive a conservative reformulation for the worst-case equal opportunity unfairness measure. We establish that the model is equivalent to a mixed binary optimization problem, which can be solved by standard off-the-shelf solvers. To improve scalability, we further propose a convex, hinge-loss-based model for large problem instances whose reformulation does not incur any binary variables. Moreover, we also consider the distributionally robust learning problem with a generic ground transportation cost to hedge against the uncertainties in the label and sensitive attribute. Finally, we numerically demonstrate that our proposed approaches improve fairness with negligible loss of predictive accuracy. © 2021, CC BY.

Set-Point Tracking MPC with Avoidance Features

This work proposes a finite-horizon optimal control strategy to solve the tracking problem while providing avoidance features to the closed-loop system. Inspired by the set-point tracking model predictive control (MPC) framework, the central idea of including artificial variables into the optimal control problem is considered. This approach allows us to add avoidance features into the set-point tracking MPC strategy without losing the properties of an enlarged domain of attraction and feasibility insurances in the face of any changing reference. Besides, the artificial variables are considered together with an avoidance cost functional to establish the basis of the strategy, maintaining the recursive feasibility property in the presence of a previously unknown number of regions to be avoided. It is shown that the closed-loop system is recursively feasible and input-to-state-stable under the mild assumption that the avoidance cost is uniformly bounded over time. Circular Economy Public Policies: A Systematic Literature Review

The traditional form of production is called linear economy, which consists of extracting, transforming, producing, consuming and discarding, and is threatened by a series of factors. Among them, we can list the increase in the world population, which went from 3.3 billion people in 1965 to 7.79 billion in 2020, which will consequently lead to an increase in the consumer class. One of the philosophies for meeting this challenge is the Circular Economy (CE), which provides the economic system with an alternative flow model. CE is seen as a new form of sustainability and has gained popularity in the scarcity of resources, the circulation of materials and the facilitation of the reuse and recycling paradigm. Some countries, concerned about the impact of the linear economy on the environment, have proposed specific laws that address the shift from the traditional mode of production to a circular approach. Germany and Japan were pioneers in promoting CE in concrete policies. Followed by China in 2008. Given this scenario, this study aimed to raise which public policies were objects of study in the period 2017 to 2021 and which tools were used to analyze the policies. A systematic review of the literature was carried out, with articles searched in the ScienceDirect and WoS databases, using the descriptors: Circular Economy and Policies. The Sample consisted of 29 articles. The study identified an increase in initiatives to seek circularity through the formulation of public policies. Many countries are demanding more sustainable production processes, with an emphasis on energy savings and fewer carbon emissions. For this, a waste treatment policy is an initial step to seek greater degrees of circularity. The most used tool to study these policies was Framework 9R. Because with it you have an idea of what initial stage the country is in and what stage can be pursued in the future.

This paper presents results from an ongoing empirical study that investigates the effect of human-centered performance management with regard to operational performance and work motivation of shop floor workers. The approach is based on gamified information provisioning. To date, the concept of gamification has been applied in numerous fields, yet hardly any related work provides empirical findings for the production environment. Based on previous approach, we realized our approach prototypically as an MES application. Then, we integrated our application into a business game simulation. The study design builds on an application scenario in manual assembly. Two treatment groups were defined for investigation. Qualitative observations show that the provision of gamified metrics-based information proves to be a motivation driver.

As variable renewables share in the Power System generation mix increases, it becomes more challenging to meet capacity and flexibility requirements. However, hydropower reservoirs can contribute to renewable energy integration due to their storage potential. This article proposes a methodology to measure the hydro plants’ maximum available power for critical scenarios and identify the most significant reservoirs' power losses. The results show that it is possible to increase reservoirs’ available power, aiming to adequately meet demand variations and sustainably improve energy security, mainly in countries where most of the electricity comes from renewables, including hydropower. © 2023, The Authors. This paper presents an empirical study based on the business game simulation method to investigate relationships between gamified metrics-based information provisioning on the shop floor, operational performance and work motivation. For this purpose, we transferred our human-centered performance management approach from previous research into an assembly application scenario. This scenario framed the study design content wise using the method of business game simulation. To this point, we conducted the developed business game amongst 135 trainees in technical vocational schools in Germany. Initially, the obtained data is evaluated with respect to operational performance using descriptive statistics. The findings provide first evidence that metrics-based information provisioning might positively affect operational performance in terms of reworks and errors compared to no information provisioning. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Effectively managing food supply chains is critical for ensuring food security and safety. Identifying and prioritizing the criteria affecting food supply chain performance is imperative to manage uncertainty and avoid undesirable consequences in Supply Chain management (SCM). This study aims to identify and prioritize critical criteria affecting food supply chains under uncertainty. We use the Delphi method to choose the predominating criteria classified into four groups: Resilience and Flexibility, Transparency and Traceability, Communication and Collaboration, and Regulation and Standardization. The fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method is used next to prioritize the selected criteria based on their significance. The results show investment in research and development, transparency and traceability, risk-sharing and collaboration among stakeholders, are the top criteria for food supply chain security and safety. These findings contribute to formulating and developing effective strategies for securing food supply chains. © 2023 The Author(s)
