Achieving Supply Chain 4.0 and the Importance of Agility, Ambidexterity, and Organizational Culture: A Case of Indonesia

This study explores the key determinants of Supply Chain 4.0 (SC4.0) maturity in the context of a developing country by examining the relationships between supply chain ambidexterity, supply chain agility, and the maturity of SC4.0. The study was carried out using the survey method involving 154 managers from Indonesian manufacturing companies. The SC4.0 maturity model was developed and tested using structural equation modeling. From our analysis, it was found that supply chain ambidexterity emphasizing on innovation positively influences the companies’ agility and SC4.0 maturity levels, and supply chain agility partially mediates supply chain ambidexterity. This paper contributes to the operationalization of SC4.0 maturity determinants that incorporate innovation and technological aspects and extends the extant literature by empirically elaborating the determinants and antecedents of SC4.0 maturity that may expedite the achievement of SC4.0 maturity. This implies that companies and supply chain professionals aiming at achieving their SC4.0 maturity should do so by being outward-looking and, at the same time, foster supply chain collaboration with external networks. This paper is pioneering the empirical study on SC4.0 and offers a means to achieving SC4.0 maturity through SC ambidexterity and SC agility, particularly in the context of a developing country. © 2022 by the authors. Refineries execute a series of interlinked processes. Given the output of a certain unit serves as the input of another one, the failures within these processes affect the quality of the end products and the revenue of the entire refinery. The implementation of realtime quality monitoring helps with accurate decision-making regarding process operations. In this paper, multiple machine-learning models aimed at forecasting the amount of ethylene (C2) and pentane (C5) content in the final product mixture are compared. In particular, strategies to deal with zero-inflated data are explored. The presence of zeroes in the dependent variable usually affects the models' learning and may result in poor performance. Furthermore, the presence of zeroes also affects the metrics used to compute the regressor's prediction quality, making it hard to assess their quality. The research results show a two-fold machine learning model leads to the best outcomes. The approach was validated with a real-world use case from a refinery.

This study aims to analyze the reasons that motivate Brazilian companies to implement Quality management Systems, according to ISO 9001:2015 requirements. Based on information collected in the literature, a questionnaire was developed and answered by professionals that work with the mentioned standard in their companies. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted with the collected data to group the validated variables into two constructs that present the most part of information variance. These constructs were entitled “internal improvements related motives” and “market related motives”. The findings of this research confirm and complement previous studies performed in Brazil and in other countries. © 2021 American Society for Quality.

Lignocellulosic agricultural wastes, such as banana trunks, are known to have the potential to be converted into bioethanol. This study aimed to investigate the potassium hydroxide microwave-assisted pretreatment (PhMa) of the banana trunk (Musa paradisiaca) and Simultaneous Saccharification Fermentation (SSF) to produce bioethanol. The study procedures were performed with varying temperatures (55–95 °C) and durations (10–50 min). PhMa was conducted with microwave irradiation at 360 Hz. The SSF process was carried out at 30–40 °C for 4–96 h. The lowest lignin content was approximately 6.84 % at 95 °C for 50 min. The highest bioethanol yield was at 5 % (v/v) during 72 h of fermentation at 30 and 40 °C. PhMa pretreatment method enabled the determination of kinetic parameters by fitting a model to various experimental data. A first-order reaction kinetic was used to calculate the activation energy. The findings indicated the activation energy 19.67 kJ mol⁻¹. © 2025 The Authors

The transportation sector is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly due to the emissions released by motor vehicles, shipping, and aviation. Carbon emissions increase significantly as demand for transportation services rises, especially in emerging economies like Bangladesh. Substantial reduction of these emissions by this sector is essential for mitigating climate change. However, decarbonization strategies and initiatives face numerous challenges in emerging economies, where transport infrastructure is still developing and heavily reliant on fossil fuels. This study, therefore, identifies and examines the barriers that emerging economies like Bangladesh encounter when implementing decarbonization strategies. First, based on literature research and expert validation, the study identified sixteen of the most relevant barriers. Then, an integrated approach combining the Bayes theorem and the Best-Worst Method (BWM) was utilized to evaluate and rank these barriers. The results obtained from this study indicate that among the sixteen barriers assessed, the top three are investment risks, high dependence on fossil fuels, and poor purchasing and expenditure power of residents (having a global weight of 0.0972, 0.0863, and 0.0847, respectively). These findings are expected to assist policymakers in emerging economies in developing structured strategies and making more targeted investment decisions that promote decarbonization in the transportation sector. They will also facilitate a smoother transition towards a sustainable transportation system and a cleaner future.

A Scalable Random Forest-Based Scheme to Detect and Locate Partial Shading in Photovoltaic Systems

All photovoltaic (PV) systems are prone to partial shading (PS) due to the environmental factors that they function in. All types of PS scenarios can lead to power loss and hot spots in the PV system. To mitigate the power loss that occurs due to PS, it is imperative to detect PS and its characteristics, such as the number of shaded modules and the associated shading factor (SF), in a reliable manner. This paper proposes a three-step framework to detect and locate PS, the number of shaded modules, and the SF in the PV system using a random forest (RF)-based model. The proposed approach utilizes independent string current and voltage measurements to distinguish different PS scenarios. This approach allows for a scalable data acquisition through an uncoupled modeling scheme. PS, the number of shaded modules and the SF are deduced with accuracies of 99.5%, 92.3%, 90.2%, respectively. Further, the proposed approach is validated through two testing tiers, and its ability to detect multiple PS scenarios in a PV system has been highlighted. The results observed through different PS scenarios confirm the high reliability and demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed RF-based approach. © 2022, The Authors. Preferences for COVID-19 vaccine: Evidence from India

India's mass vaccination efforts have been slow due to high levels of vaccine hesitancy. This study uses data from an online discrete choice experiment with 1371 respondents to rigorously examine the factors shaping vaccine preference in the country. We find that vaccine efficacy, presence of side effects, protection duration, distance to vaccination centre and vaccination rates within social network play a critical role in determining vaccine demand. We apply a non-parametric model to uncover heterogeneity in the effects of these factors. We derive two novel insights from this analysis. First, even though, on average, domestically developed vaccines are preferred, around 30 percent of the sample favours foreign-developed vaccines. Second, vaccine preference of around 15 percent of the sample is highly sensitive to the presence of side effects and vaccination uptake among their peer group. These results provide insights for the ongoing policy debate around vaccine adoption in India. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Inspired by the backbone architecture of wired networks, in this study, we applied the concept of a virtual backbone to the routing scheme in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) to develop an effective routing method. Using connected dominating set (CDS)-based methods to construct a virtual backbone network can effectively improve routing performance in a MANET. The CDS virtual backbone network we developed in the present study can respond quickly and identify routing paths through these CDS members as the network topology changes. Meanwhile, the nodes that are not CDS members can enter the power-saving mode to minimize unnecessary power consumption. Wireless nodes in a MANET can move freely within the network;therefore, CDS virtual backbones are easy to deconstruct. Researchers have developed centralized and decentralized CDS algorithms to reconstruct network topologies. When previously developed centralized CDS algorithms are applied, the system requires the information of all nodes in the network to reconstruct the virtual backbone. Therefore, the information exchange costs of such algorithms before refactoring are high. By contrast, decentralized CDS algorithms can use local information to reconstruct virtual backbones quickly. Yet, decentralized algorithms produce larger CDSs than centralized algorithms. To improve upon the performance of previously developed decentralized algorithms, we developed and herein present a new decentralized CDS algorithm called APP-CDS that can quickly construct a virtual backbone with the smallest possible CDS for use in MANET environments. © 2023, The Authors. Willingness to pay and attitudinal preferences of indian consumers for electric vehicles

Consumer preference elicitation is critical to devise effective policies for the diffusion of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. This study contributes to the EV demand literature in the Indian context by (a) analysing the EV attributes and attitudinal factors of Indian car buyers that determine consumers' preferences for EVs, (b) estimating Indian consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) to buy EVs with improved attributes, and c) quantifying how the reference dependence affects the WTP estimates. We adopt a hybrid choice modelling approach for the above analysis. The results indicate that accounting for reference dependence provides more realistic WTP estimates than the standard utility estimation approach. Our results suggest that Indian consumers are willing to pay an additional US$10-34 in the purchase price to reduce the fast charging time by 1 minute, US$7-40 to add a kilometre to the driving range of EVs at 200 kilometres, and US$104-692 to save US$1 per 100 kilometres in operating cost. These estimates and the effect of attitudes on the likelihood to adopt EVs provide insights about EV design, marketing strategies, and pro-EV policies (e.g., specialised lanes and reserved parking for EVs) to expedite the adoption of EVs in India. By replacing conventional gray cast iron (GI) with compacted graphite iron (CGI), automotive industry could keep up with stricter regulations on emissions and demands on higher engine performance. CGI has improved properties as to GI but is more difficult to machine. This study evaluates the machining performance at sustainable machining during finish face milling when using minimum quantity lubrication applied vegetable oil with and without graphite nano-additive, resulting in 8% or 17–23% improved tool life respectively as to dry conditions. The major part of the study investigates the wear mechanisms in commercial Ti(C,N)-Al2O3 CVD-coated cemented carbide. The coating degrades by mechanically induced cracking and fractures, oxidation of adhered CGI inside cracks, diffusional dissolution of Ti(C,N) layer, and reaction of Al2O3 layer with MgO inclusions forming a softer (Mg,Fe,Mn)Al2O4 spinel which is easier removed by the superficial plastic deformation due to chip flow. Other oxide inclusions, when deposited on cemented carbide surfaces, prevents adhesion of CGI material and thus reduces the wear rate. CGI adhering to cemented carbide induces diffusional loss of cobalt and carbon that eventually forms (Fex,Co1-x)3C iron carbide at the tool-workpiece interface which can reduce the diffusion rate. Novel findings also relates to the formation of 15 µm deep cracks in the cemented carbide due to inward diffusion of Fe accompanied by its oxidation that speeds up the oxygen ingress and further oxidation of W and Co. However, oxidation was found to provide a positive effect when the adhered CGI completely oxidized to form Fe2SiO4 oxide ceramic Tool Protection Layer which slowed down tool material degradation. © 2023, The Authors.
