The aviation industry has a significant impact on the environment, accounting for 13% of global fossil fuel consumption and 2% of annual CO 2 emissions. One of the factors that increase this consumption is engine degradation due to the accumulation of dirt on compressor blades. To mitigate this effect and restore efficiency, compressor washing is essential, but it requires high water consumption. This study analyzes the operational, economic, and environmental benefits of optimizing this process, based on the Blue Economy. Fuel efficiency was assessed using the Fuel/RTM indicator, financial viability using ROI, and environmental impacts using the MIF index. The results indicate a 1.8% gain in fuel efficiency, annual savings of $179,000, a 6.9% reduction in environmental impact, and a 50% drop in water use. The findings demonstrate that sustainable maintenance practices generate economic and environmental gains, contributing to the conservation of water resources in aviation.

University–industry collaborations create socioeconomic impacts for the areas where they are undertaken. Although these collaborations have recognized importance and a high potential to generate economic and social benefits, there is no consensus in the literature on a consolidated conceptual model for assessing their socioeconomic impacts. Given this scenario, this study reviews 94 studies on the socioeconomic impact of university–industry collaborations using a context– intervention–mechanism–outcomes configuration. The impacts identified in the systematic literature review are classified into: (1) economic, (2) social, and (3) financial. The systematic literature review also indicates that the impact of collaborations can change the context and enhance the mechanisms of technology transfer. From a theoretical viewpoint, this work contributes to the structuring of a conceptual model for assessing the socioeconomic impacts of university–industry collaborations. In addition, the results have contributions for management in each strand of the triple helix: they may be useful to guide universities and companies on how to assess the socioeconomic impacts of each collaboration, direct public agents in the evaluation of results of investments, and support the development of policies for innovation and technology management. © 2021 by the authors. There are several types of wound healing with their own healing properties and alginate bio polymer has been used of several wound dressing materials in order to prevent wound desiccation. Alginate enhances the hydrophilic nature of wound dressing materials to generate the needed moist wound environment, exhibits attractive properties being non-toxic, biodegradable and excellent bio compatibility. In addition, alginate also could easily be cross-linked with other organic and inorganic compounds, and it can aid wound healing in clinical practice. This review focuses properties such as wettability, mechanical and antibacterial studied alginates membrane as wound dressing.

Industrial Safety deals with the physical integrity of humans, machines and the environment when they interact during production scenarios. Industrial Safety is subject to a rigorous certification process that leads to inflexible settings, in which all changes are forbidden. With the progressing introduction of smart robotics and smart machinery to the factory floor, combined with an increasing shortage of skilled workers, it becomes imperative that safety scenarios incorporate a flexible handling of the boundary between humans, machines and the environment. In order to increase the well-being of workers, reduce accidents, and compensate for different skill sets, the configuration of machines and the factory floor should be dynamically adapted, while still enforcing functional safety requirements. The contribution of this paper is as follows: (1) We present a set of three scenarios, and discuss how industrial safety mechanisms could be augmented through dynamic changes to the work environment in order to decrease potential accidents, and thus increase productivity. (2) We introduce the concept of a Cognition Aware Safety System (CASS) and its architecture. The idea behind CASS is to integrate AI based reasoning about human load, stress, and attention with AI based selection of actions to avoid the triggering of safety stops. (3) And finally, we will describe the required performance measurement dimensions for a quantitative performance measurement model to enable a comprehensive (triple bottom line) impact assessment of CASS. Additionally we introduce a detailed guideline for expert interviews to explore the feasibility of the approach for given scenarios. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Value stream mapping (VSM) is a valuable practice employed by industry experts to identify inefficiencies in the value chain due to its visual representation capability and general ease of use. Enabled by a shift towards digitalization and smart connected systems, this project investigates the possibilities of transitioning VSM from a manual to digital process through the utilization of data generated from a Real-Time Location System (RTLS). This study focuses on merging the aspects of RTLS and VSM such that their advantages are combined to form a more robust and effective VSM process. Two simulated experiments and an initial validation test were conducted to demonstrate the capability of the system to function in an industrial environment by replicating an actual production process. The two experiments represent the current state of conditions of the company in two different instances of time. These outputs from the tracking system are then modified and converted into inputs for VSM. A VSM application was modified and utilized to create a digital value stream map with relevant performance parameters. Finally, a stochastic simulation was carried out to compare and extrapolate the results to a 16hrs shift to measure, among other outputs, the utilization of the machines with the two RTLS scenarios.

A fortification game (FG) is a three-level, two-player Stackelberg game, also known as defender-attacker-defender game, in which at the uppermost level, the defender selects some assets to be protected from potential malicious attacks. At the middle level, the attacker solves an interdiction game by depreciating unprotected assets, i.e., reducing the values of such assets for the defender, while at the innermost level the defender solves a recourse problem over the surviving or partially damaged assets. Fortification games have applications in various important areas, such as military operations, design of survivable networks, protection of facilities or power grid protection. In this work, we present an exact solution algorithm for FGs, in which the recourse problems correspond to (possibly NP-hard) combinatorial optimization problems. The algorithm is based on a new generic mixed-integer linear programming reformulation in the natural space of fortification variables. Our new model makes use of fortification cuts that measure the contribution of a given fortification strategy to the objective function value. These cuts are generated on-the-fly by solving separation problems, which correspond to (modified) middle-level interdiction games. We design a branch-and-cut-based solution algorithm based on fortification cuts, their lifted versions and other speed-up techniques. We present a computational study using the knapsack fortification game and the shortest path fortification game. For the latter one, we include a comparison with a state-of-the-art solution method from the literature. Over the past 10 years, materials science and engineering have shown increasing interest in incorporating lignocellulosic fibers into polymer and hybrid composites (LCF-CPH). This bibliometric analysis, covering the period 2012 to 2022, examines the current state of research on the application of these fibers in composites, with the aim of identifying significant contributions, new trends, and possible future directions. The analysis included a comprehensive database search using specific criteria, which revealed a significant increase in research activity on a variety of lignocellulosic fibers, such as flax, jute, hemp and sisal. This growth is particularly evident in the packaging, automotive, aerospace and construction industries. Hybrid composites based on these fibers have gained prominence due to their enhanced properties, which include improvements in mechanical, thermal and environmental characteristics. The findings of this research have significant implications for governments, corporations, and academic institutions. Researchers gain a deeper understanding of emerging trends, industry gains valuable insights into the advantages of adopting lignocellulosic fibers, and policymakers gain essential information to support the development of sustainable composites. In the field of advanced composites and sustainable materials, this work lays a solid foundation for future research and industrial applications. © 2024

This paper develops means to analyze and cluster residential households into homogeneous groups based on the electricity load. Classifying customers by electricity load profiles is a top priority for retail electric providers (REPs), so they can plan and conduct demand response (DR) effectively. We present a practical method to identify the most DR-profitable customer groups as opposed to tailoring DR programs for each separate household, which may be computationally prohibitive. Electricity load data of 10,000 residential households from 2017 located in Texas was used. The study proposed the clustered load-profile method (CLPM) to classify residential customers based on their electricity load profiles in combination with a dynamic program for DR scheduling to optimize DR profits. The main conclusions are that the proposed approach has an average 2.3% profitability improvement over a business-as-usual heuristic. In addition, the proposed method on average is approximately 70 times faster than running the DR dynamic programming separately for each household. Thus, our method not only is an important application to provide computational business insights for REPs and other power market participants but also enhances resilience for power grid with an advanced DR scheduling tool. On the Convergence of Nested Decentralized Gradient Methods with Multiple Consensus and Gradient Steps

In this paper, we consider minimizing a sum of local convex objective functions in a distributed setting, where the cost of communication and/or computation can be expensive. We extend and generalize the analysis for a class of nested gradient-based distributed algorithms (NEAR-DGD, [1]) to account for multiple gradient steps at every iteration. We show the effect of performing multiple gradient steps on the rate of convergence and on the size of the neighborhood of convergence, and prove R-Linear convergence to the exact solution with a fixed number of gradient steps and increasing number of consensus steps. We test the performance of the generalized method on quadratic functions and show the effect of multiple consensus and gradient steps in terms of iterations, number of gradient evaluations, number of communications and cost. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of the social and economic effects of solar mini-grids in rural African settings, specifically in Kenya and Nigeria. A group of 2,658 household heads and business owners connected to mini-grids over the last five years were interviewed both before and one year after their connection. These interviews focused on changes in gender equality, productivity, health, safety, and economic activity. The results show notable improvements in all areas. Economic activities and productivity increased significantly among the connected households and businesses. The median income of rural Kenyan community members quadrupled. Gender equality also improved, with women gaining more opportunities in decision making and business. Health and safety enhancements were linked to reduced use of hazardous energy sources like kerosene lamps. The introduction of solar mini-grids not only transformed the energy landscape but also led to broad socioeconomic benefits in these rural areas. The research highlights the substantial impact of decentralized renewable energy on the social and economic development of rural African communities.
