Reverse supply chain issues in Indian electronics industry: a case study

The electronics industry is growing fast with the advent of new technologies and product innovation across the globe. Short product life cycle coupled with the huge demand for electronics products, generating a pile of discarded products results in e-waste generation. The industry is also facing the higher product returns due to the increase in online business and liberal policies offered to the consumers. Effective and efficient reverse supply chain implementation may help in managing these returns along with the end of life product returns. Despite a growing body of research in the area of reverse supply chain, industries are reluctant to adopt best practices of the reverse supply chain. The proposed study aims at exploring the key strategic issues and challenges faced by the electronics industry by using case study method. A case of Indian Electronics Organization is analyzed to identify key strategic issues and challenges in the managing reverse supply chain. The study will help the managers in understanding the complexities of reverse supply chain management in the electronics industry such as critical success factors, outsourcing decisions, disposition decisions, performance evaluation, and forecasting product returns. © 2018, Springer Nature B.V.

The aim of this study is to understand the blockchain adoption behaviour in Brazilian supply chains. Specifically, the study aims to unlock the potential of social influence; taking into consideration workers from the Brazilian supply chains. We proposed a model using constructs from a unified theory of acceptance and the use of technology (UTAUT). The models were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and the findings indicated the power of social influence in predicting other UTAUT constructs. In addition, this study shows the mediation effect of effort expectancy and the facilitating conditions in the relationship between social influence and the behavioural intention to adopt blockchain. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (KSat) is a key soil attribute that influences hydrological processes at multiple scales. It is well known that KSat is difficult to measure in the field. Field KSat measurement requires time and expensive equipment, skilled labor, and due to the variability of KSat, many samples are required. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are powerful non-linear mathematical models that can estimate KSat from different soil and environmental input variables as well as using dimensionless variables generated using database resizing techniques via principal component analysis (PCA). Our main goal is to construct artificial neural network models for predicting KSat using soil and different land uses as input variables at a watershed scale. The study area is the Eller Creek watershed of about 0.7 km2 in southern Brazil, in which we established an experimental grid of 178 sampling points. Data of soil bulk density, total porosity, microporosity, macroporosity, soil organic carbon content, sand, silt and clay, and KSat were determined at each point in the 0-20 cm layer. A land-use map was derived from satellite images and used to identify the land use around each soil sampling point. PCA was applied to the original dataset and two selected PCs were included as input variables for ANN modeling. Our results suggest that PC inclusion as input parameters, collectively or individually, combined with the original data, increased the performance of the analyzed ANN models, when compared to similar models using only the original data and without PCs. The use of ANN models showed that the variation of KSat in the ECW watershed is not only associated with soil hydrological and environmental covariates, but also to PCs which are orthogonal linear recombinations that encapsulate the main sources of variation of the original datasets. © 2024, The Authors. The sources of aroma can be varied according to the food's type and it is part of the ingredients that has an important role to increase people interest in certain foods. However, the most popular source of aroma is rum which is not halal for Muslim community. In this research, the researcher wanted to see the effect of adding essential oil from nutmeg seeds to the addition of the aroma of cookies made from durian seed flour to see the acceptance of customers of the product innovation using nutmeg essential oil to increase the aroma of cookies or food products that usually using rum or non-halal products and seeing the long-term impact that could possibly create sustainability advantages by occupying the waste of durian seed in to flour to substitute wheat flour. This study uses an organoleptic test. The science that uses the human senses to measure the texture, appearance, aroma, and taste of a food product is called sensory or organoleptic evaluation. Assessment of appearance, taste, and texture describes consumer acceptance of a product. The results show that consumers acceptance for this product innovation well so that the control prescription that can be given for this product innovation can be continued. The second experiment got the highest response compared to the first and third experiments.

A deep reinforcement learning driving policy for autonomous road vehicles

This work regards our preliminary investigation on the problem of path planning for autonomous vehicles that move on a freeway. We approach this problem by proposing a driving policy based on Reinforcement Learning. The proposed policy makes minimal or no assumptions about the environment, since no a priori knowledge about the system dynamics is required. We compare the performance of the proposed policy against an optimal policy derived via Dynamic programming and against manual driving simulated by SUMO traffic simulator. There has been a great focus for manufacturing companies in Iraq and developing countries to obtain ISO 9001 Quality management System, as a standard for Quality management and Quality Assurance to document processes and procedures. ISO 9000 is a process that typically changes the culture of an organization to enable TQM to be successful. Most companies believe that, implementing ISO9000 would be a suitable approach to gain advantages in product quality, delivery, productivity and customer loyalty, despite common misunderstandings which exist between the concepts of ISO9000 and the TQM approach, and the nature of the relationships between them. The purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which the advantages of ISO9001 can be utilized as a mediating factor in implementing TQM practices in Iraqi manufacturing companies, based on a comprehensive review of the most recently published papers about this issue. Researchers have concluded that ISO9001 certification is only the beginning, not the end of a process of continuous improvements. It can be a useful cornerstone of TQM. ISO 9001 has a significant influence, that If it is explicated in a method that allows the organization to initiate a continuous improvement process through the teamwork of employee in the organization, which may facilitate an excellent start for the TQM journey.

Determination of the abstraction level in production network models

In recent years the importance of production network modeling has increased significantly, as companies face rising complexity and dynamics in their environment. Quantitative models help to gain understanding and support strategic decision making in production network management. Choosing the right abstraction level by determining the trade-off between model accuracy and effort for modeling is crucial for developing viable and applicable models. While experienced model builders can identify the right abstraction level intuitionally, a structured process would lead to results which are more consistent. This paper presents an approach to structure and streamline the determination of the abstraction level. A basic concept is presented, that enables systematic definition of the abstraction level for a given model framework. A process implementing the concept is proposed, that helps to identify the right abstraction level based on case-specific requirements and restrictions and tailor the model to solve the examined problem. The process is tested in a case study at a globally operating tooling machine company.

Investigation and analysis of accumulators for the use of electrochemical storage in hybrid shunting locomotives

This paper evaluates storage batteries with respect to usage in hybrid shunting locomotives. Topics are the status quo of existing technologies as well as future electrochemical storage technologies. A target system is used to evaluate the technologies. Furthermore, relevant battery characteristics for the usage in hybrid shunting locomotives have been identified. The necessary data have been retrieved from current literature (document analysis) and by a survey made with scientific and industrial experts. The results of the study show, that batteries of the lithium-ion-technology with a lithium-titanate anode and a lithium-iron-phosphate cathode are currently the most suitable batteries for the use in hybrid shunting locomotives. Promising future technologies are under investigation, but these technologies are several years away from their market entry.

Since the inception of Agile Manifesto and in the 15 years since agile project management (APM) has been in use, it has become a cutting-edge approach practiced, primarily although not exclusively, in the software industry. APM is slowly breaking through into other domains as well. Therefore, the objective of this study is to summarize and critically examine contributions of past research and existing knowledge concerning APM applicability beyond software industry and its co-existence with traditional project management (TPM) practice, and to identify the potential challenges and benefits of APM in innovation and new product development processes. Systematic literature review (SLR) protocol was developed to systematically locate, assess and aggregate the outcomes from all relevant studies in a transparent way. Gaps identified in this SLR will be used to suggest areas for further investigation and to provide a framework for appropriate position of future research activities. © 2018 IEEE.
