Microalgae is one of the main substances used in the biomass production process in order to produce environmentally-friendly biofuels. Microalgae biomass production process influenced by several of environmental factors, specifically, the use of catalysts which play an important role in order to produce a significant yield of microalgae biomass. The use of catalyst should obey the rules of green chemistry and also minimalizing the negative impact to the environment. This paper aims to compare the effectiveness of the use of three types of catalysts: biocatalysts (enzymes), homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. These three types catalyst then used as additive components in the transesterification process to produce microalgae biomass. This study was conducted by collecting data related to the yield of biomass contained in several scientific journals through the Science Direct website using the systematic literature review method. The data processing involves a semi meta-analysis method using the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test, followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test using Fisher’s method.

In the current industrial revolution, additive manufacturing (AM) embodies a promising technology that can enhance the effectiveness, adaptability, and competitiveness of supply chains (SCs). Moreover, it facilitates the development of distributed SCs, thereby enhancing product availability, inventory levels, and lead time. However, the wide adoption of AM in industrial SCs creates various challenges, leading to new difficulties for SC design. In this context, this paper proposes a new design approach to AM SCs using optimization methods. More specifically, the proposed approach, comprising the pmedian and mixed-integer linear programming models, considers the decision of deploying productive resources (3D printers) in specific locations of generic spare part SCs. The approach was evaluated in a real-world use case of an elevator maintenance service provider. The obtained results demonstrated the promising capabilities of the proposed design approach in managing the challenges arising from the forthcoming widespread use of 3D printers in manufacturing SCs. © 2020, CC-BY-NC-ND.

To optimize resource use in production, Lean manufacturing is the most widely implemented method in the world. One of the most useful tools in Lean production is Value Stream Mapping (VSM). With focus on visualizing key data of a production process in a single picture, VSM attempts to reveal bottleneck steps in a process. As a consequence, industrial engineers can determine which stages of the process should be put emphasis on improving. However, VSM sole consideration is economics and other aspects of sustainability such as societal and environmental are neglected. With Sustainable Value Stream Mapping (SVSM), all necessary illustrations for a sustainable manufacturing process can be visualized, which leads to higher chances to identify potential problems in the efficiency of production processes beyond the ones identified using lean manufacturing. This research provides a case study where SVSM is applied in an apparel company in order to identify potential issues in the sustainability of their production process. Furthermore, this paper highlights several potential solutions such as Radio-frequency identification (RFID), big data and ergonomics improvement by discussing the impact of their implementation on the process sustainability. Finally, the conclusion section discusses limits in the solutions implementation and suggest future research. © 2018 IEEE.

A multicriteria decision making approach to study barriers to the adoption of autonomous vehicles

Automation technology is emerging, but the adoption rate of autonomous vehicles (AV) will depend upon how policymakers and the government address various challenges such as public acceptance and infrastructure development. This study follows a five-stage method to understand these barriers to AV adoption. First, based on a literature review followed by discussions with experts, ten barriers are identified. Second, the opinions of eighteen experts from industry and academia regarding inter-relations between these barriers are recorded. Third, a multicriteria decision making technique, the grey-based Decision-making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (Grey-DEMATEL), is applied to characterize the structure of relationships between the barriers. Fourth, robustness of the results is tested using sensitivity analysis. Fifth, the key results are depicted in a causal loop diagram (CLD), a systems thinking approach, to comprehend cause-and-effect relationships between the barriers. The results indicate that the lack of customer acceptance (LCA) is the most prominent barrier, the one which should be addressed at the highest priority. The CLD suggests that LCA can be mitigated by addressing two other prominent and more tangible barriers . lack of industry standards and the absence of regulations and certifications. The study.s contribution lies in demonstrating that the barriers to AV adoption do not exist in isolation but are linked with each other in overlapping loops of cause and effect relationships. These insights can help different stakeholders in prioritizing their endeavors to expedite AV adoption. From the methodological perspective, this is the first study in the transportation literature that integrates Grey-DEMATEL with systems thinking. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Transport Airplane Risk Assessment Methodology (TARAM) is a process for calculating risk associated with continued operational safety (COS) issues in the U.S. transport airplane fleet. TARAM is important because its risk-analysis calculations are used when making determinations of unsafe conditions in transport airplanes, and when selecting and implementing corrective actions. TARAM is used by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for risk analysis and risk management decisions regarding COS. Aircraft certification offices use it to resolve COS issues for transport category airplanes. This methodology is also used by design approval holders, in whole or in part, by agreement with the applicable aircraft certification office. The goal of this study is to assess the TARAM process used by the FAA. Including a systematic risk assessment methodology in the continued operational safety analysis is important for a comprehensive approach to the overall safety of the transport airplane fleet. TARAM is an initial attempt by the FAA to fill such a role. A healthy safety culture requires commitment to continuous improvement. Urban in Indonesia, is no longer limited as a center of community settlement. Now the city also functions as a center of government, a central hierarchy, and a center of economic growth. As a logical consequence of the role of cities as a center of growth and economy, urban contributions to national economic growth are increasing. To overcome this problem, a portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system was designed. With the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the dryer will be easily moved and flexible to use. The advantage of portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is the drying process could be done continuously with a little human power. Therefore, this portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is designed to use renewable energy sources. To examine the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the foodstuff was used for a testing of ingredients. The portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system testing show that the amount of water content in the foodstuff reduced, the drying rate accelerate. In addition, the amount of heat energy needed for the drying process also reduced. Hence process of drying foodstuff more efficienct. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this work we consider the problem of path planning for an autonomous vehicle that moves on a freeway. The most common approaches that are used to address this problem are based on optimal control methods, which make assumptions about the model of the environment and the system dynamics. On the contrary, we propose the development of a driving policy based on reinforcement learning. In this way, the proposed driving policy makes minimal or no assumptions about the environment, since a priori knowledge about the system dynamics is not required. We consider driving scenarios where the road is occupied both by autonomous and manual driving vehicles. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first approaches that propose a reinforcement learning driving policy for mixed driving environments. The derived reinforcement learning policy, firstly, is compared against an optimal policy derived via dynamic programming, and, secondly, its efficiency is evaluated under realistic scenarios generated by the established SUMO microscopic traffic flow simulator. Finally, we present some initial results regarding the effect of autonomous vehicles’ behavior on the overall traffic flow. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The present study analyses how the elements of a corporate environmental management system (environmental strategy, environmental management practices (EMPs) and business competitiveness) are connected for the creation of competitive advantage in clothing and leather companies, strongly affected by sustainability issues. The research was conducted through an online survey submitted to Italian companies. A structural equation modelling approach was employed to test the hypothesised model. Results indicate that the implementation of sustainable product and process practices have positive impacts on company’s business competitiveness. Moreover, companies having a greater integration of sustainable practices in their competitive strategy show advantages in terms of brand value, employees’ retention and access to capital. The most important stakeholders involved in the definition of an environmental strategy are suppliers and companies’ employees. Focusing the attention on the business competitiveness impacts of EMPs, companies that have a production plant abroad show greater competitiveness impacts. © 2017, © The Textile Institute and Informa UK Ltd 2017.
