This paper presents our study on a development of a Qinger rehabilitation device, especially a prototype of pneumatic actuator we newly designed for a Qinger rehabilitation. Because the actuator made from nylon Qilm can be actuated under low air pressure, a a-little-volume pump can even actuate the nylon-Qilm actuator. The Qinger rehabilitation device including the nylon-Qilm actuator and the air pump driven by a DC motor will be suitable for the rehabilitation at home for people who want to carry it anywhere and anytime because the actuator and the air pump are small and light. The nylon-Qilm actuator is designed for two kinds of Qinger motions. One is for the extension that is most important to people with hand paralysis. Another is for the Qlexion, which each joint angle and the actuator’s lengths between joints can be adjusted for individuals. The actuator is activated under low air pressure and assists Qinger motions even if a little volume air pump driven by a low power DC motor is used for a drive unit. Before we made a prototype of the nylon-Qilm actuator, we considered using one of the existing soft pneumatic actuators made from elastomer for the rehabilitation device. However, it was not activated at under low air pressure drive unit. In contrast to the weight of the previous elastomer actuator that is approximately 30g, the nylon-Qilm one we developed is approximately 10g. So, the device consisted of the actuators will give less stress for people’s bodies and allow them to continue Qinger rehabilitation for extended periods of time. The rehabilitation device consisted of the nylon-Qilm actuator with small drive unit will be also portable and wearable. Moreover, because the nylon Qilm is cheap and the actuator can be easily made, it is more accessible than the elastomer actuator. © 2019 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

The fatigue ratio [fatigue limit (?W) / tensile strength (?B)] of bulk metallic glass (BMG) was initially smaller by an order of magnitude than that of the crystalline structural alloys of 0.3 to 0.6. Then, the BMG was regarded as useless for structural members. However, the ?W/?B of BMGs increased with increasing the year, and recently a large value of about 0.8 was shown for a Ti-based BMG, and the maximum cyclic stress (?max) was about 90% of the ?B. Since BMG has no dislocation, it may not show fatigue. Therefore, in this report, using high-purity elements, the Zr-based BMG with less impurities and less defects was made by arc-melt Cu mold tilt casting method, which is expected to have less impurities or defects, and fatigue strength of the BMG was examined by also paying attention to the polishing of the specimen surface. As a result, higher value of the ?W/?B about 0.8 ~ 0.9, and the ?max/?B of about 0.9 ~ 1.0 were shown. In addition, the influence of increase in number of casting times with same master BMG, which raises the yield rate of the master BMG, on the ?B and ?W and the influence of the specimen surface polishing level on the ?W are reported. © 2019 Society of Materials Science Japan. This study examined the effect of the surface conditions on evaluating ductile cast iron matrix with the eddy current method. Specimens having matrix with various pearlite ratio were prepared. The surfaces of the specimens are machined by face mill and shaping machine with various cutting conditions. Surface roughness of the test piece was measured. Eddy current testing was carried out with an eddy current flaw tester. Cutting condition affects the eddy current signals especially when a worn cutting chip was used. Difference of matrix can be evaluated by using eddy current signals, but the surface machining has unignorable effect. © 2016, The WFO (The World Foundry Organization Ltd). All rights reserved.

Clustering is a fundamental tool for data analysis. Typically, all attributes of the data are used for clustering. However, if a set of attributes can be divided into meaningful subsets, it may be effective to cluster the data for each subset. In this paper, we propose a method for dividing the set of elements of feature vectors into meaningful subsets. Considering the dependencies between the elements, the correlation is used as the metric for clustering. In order to effectively solve the optimization problem, a technique for graph cut is used. After dividing the set of elements into subsets, clustering is performed for each subset. Experiments using a handwritten image database show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Sensor Network technologies are expected to be used in various kinds of application systems. Most of them, however, have been developed to work in a dedicated system. It is desired that various types of sensor networks could be operable in a same application system. To meet the requirement, we have studied middleware architecture named CMSAS (Common Middleware in Sensors, Actuators and Storages), which aims to realize virtual communications between various devices such as heterogeneous sensor networks, actuators and storages. In this paper, we propose the concept of CMSAS based on RT middleware, which was developed by National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) to integrate components in robot technologies. We also discuss implementation design of CMSAS in wireless sensor networks to collect acceleration data. Copyright © 2014 ACM.

Owing to the occurrence of the Great East Japan Earthquake and a rise in concern about the global warming issue, we are required to review the conventional Japanese life style and to improve our awareness of energy conservation. At schools, education on energy saving as part of the environmental education field attracts our attention. “Technology for visualization of electric power consumption” has been developed as a tool to promote energy saving activity. In this research, we propose a novel system to promote energy saving activity at school using a sensor network, and complete the proto-type equipment and confirm its performance and usefulness. The system has the following features: offers various functions for energy-saving activities, lower price and ease of construction when compared with conventional tools.

In this paper, we propose a new switching median filter with signal dependent thresholds designed by a genetic algorithm (GA). The switching median filter detects noise-corrupted pixels based on a threshold. Then it restores only the detected pixels. The present switching median filter deals with the random-valued impulse noises, whose distribution is ideally assumed as a uniform distribution. In the present method, the switching median filter, which has two kinds of the thresholds, is introduced. One is switching thresholds to detect the noise, and the other is selecting thresholds to choose the suitable switching threshold. As the suitable selecting threshold, a variance of signals is used. Then all of the switching and selecting thresholds of the proposed switching median filter are automatically optimized by using GA. To optimize the thresholds with GA, distribution distance between the assumed and the detected noises is employed as a fitness function. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by some experiments.

Increasing of Java Scripts of malware requires automatic malware detection systems in these days. Our research takes note of the appearence probability and the state transition probability of first order Markov source for both of malware Java Script and other Java Script. The preexperiments found statistical significance. We propose the malware detection method using Mahalanobis-distance with the probability variable of the appearance probability of characters and the probability variable of state transition probability of first order Markov source. As the results of experiments, the method of combining two probability variables proved the effectiveness compared to the method using single probability variable.

In this paper, the novel active composite right/left-handed transmission lines (CRLH-TLs) are presented incorporating FETs for the reconfigurable antennas. The demonstrated CRLH-TL with three FETs has four states with respect to the bias combination of the FETs. The measured characteristics of the developed active CRLH-TL indicate two states of the radiation and the reflection with the bias combination. In the case of the radiation state, the backward radiations are observed from the EM simulation in the left-handed (LH) region. The proposed active CRLH-TLs incorporating FETs provide the reconfigurable characteristics for the leaky wave antenna.
