This paper presents a practical methodology for optimizing the geometry of electrical grounding grids at industrial frequencies of 50Hz and 60Hz, integrating advanced calculation techniques and evolutionary algorithms to improve the safety and operational performance of electrical grounding systems. The proposed approach is particularly beneficial for industrial automation and control systems, where effective grounding is necessary to maintain system reliability and prevent downtime. This methodology employs mathematical modeling and computational tools to optimize grid parameters, ensuring compliance with safety standards while reducing operational costs, thus contributing to the overall efficiency of automated systems in industrial environments. The study reports a reduction of up to 66% in the number of vertical rods and 40% in horizontal conductors compared to traditional methods. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can significantly reduce material usage and costs while maintaining electrical safety in accordance with regulatory standards, making it applicable to a wide range of industrial settings, including substations and automated facilities. © 2025 The Authors

Evolutionary algorithms are heuristic methods that have yielded promising results for solving nonlinear, nondifferentiable, and multi-modal optimization problems in the power systems area. The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm that uses a rather greedy and less stochastic approach to problem solving than do classical evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, and evolution strategies. DE also incorporates an efficient way of self-adapting mutation using small populations. The potentialities of DE are its simple structure, easy use, convergence property, quality of solution, and robustness. This paper proposes a new approach for solving economic load dispatch problems with valve-point effect. The proposed method combines the DE algorithm with the generator of chaos sequences and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) technique to optimize the performance of economic dispatch problems. The DE with chaos sequences is the global optimizer, and the SQP is used to fine-tune the DE run in a sequential manner. The combined methodology and its variants are validated for two test systems consisting of 13 and 40 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects. The proposed combined method outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in solving load dispatch problems with the valve-point effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The adoption of omni-channel strategy has changed the relation between retailers and customers and brought more complexity to the retailing supply chains. To address the increasing complexity, it is necessary to adopt innovative approaches based on information technologies and intelligent decision methods. The challenges to retailers are improving the accuracy of offline and online channels demand forecasting, better managing offline and online customer's needs, thus reducing the uncertainties of the omni-channel retailing supply chain. The purpose of this article is to introduce and test a model for green performance assessment in supply chains. The research method was the qualitative modeling. By literature review a model was proposed, consisting of three constructs described and appraised by categorical indicators: green strategy;green innovation;and green operations. The model originated a scale, with five degrees for the measurement of the indicators: very good=1;good=0.75;neutral=0.5;bad=0.25;very bad=0. An application was made in a supply chain of the footwear industry. Focal company managers were asked to distribute importance among the constructs and fulfill the scale. Outcomes obtained, with uniform distribution, and weighted by AHP methods, reached close to 40% of the maximum possible. The worst-performing construct and indicators were operations, reverse logistics and green distribution. Actions have been proposed to improve them.

In the context of data mining, infrequent association rules may be beneficial for analysing rare or extreme cases with very low support values and high confidence. In researching risky situations or allocating specific resources, such rules may have a much greater impact than rules with high support value. The objective of this study is to obtain association rules from the database of lawsuits filed in the Federal Court of Southern Brazil in 2016, including both frequent and rare rules. By finding these rules, especially rare ones, the information collected can assist in the decision-making process, in this case, such as training clerks or establishing specialised courts. This article presents a model for performance measurement in supply chains. The methodology had two-steps: a qualitative part to identify constructs and indicators and a quantitative one to measure them. The model has two dimensions: SCOR model process: source, make, deliver, and return;and priorities: cost, quality, delivery, flexibility. A 4 x 4 matrix resulted, weighted by AHP. In the cells, indicators, with ranges and five categories [very good, good, neutral, bad, very bad] were allocated to appraise the priority in the process. The ranges were set in the planning process of SCOR. An application was done in the hard core of a supply chain of the footwear industry, including 72 indicators in four suppliers;the focal company;three distribution channels;and a return channel. The SC overall performance reached near 80% of the maximum possible value. Worst performance was flexibility in deliver and delivery in make.

WebLabs, or Remotely Operated Laboratories, allow for remote control and monitoring of interactive or batched systems with educational objectives. Considered as additional resources in education, they contribute to a flexible learning model and make possible for students to perform laboratory experiments remotely, off-class, in collaboration, thus contributing to the reduction of laboratory equipment idleness. The purpose of this paper is to report steps in designing and enabling a WebLab with background theme on the control and monitoring of thermal comfort parameters in a newborn baby incubator. Three didactical experiments can be performed in this WebLab: transfer function evaluation, on-off control and PID controller tuning, with users challenged to optimally tune the parameters of a controller algorithm. In the end of the session, the user can enter his/her impressions regarding the WebLab usage by answering a questionnaire. The WebLab design includes the evaluation of students' abilities through performance indexes while keeping operation within the requirements of an associated medical safety standard. A systematic approach for the WebLab design process has been employed, with the system design split in three layers: physical system, hardware and software. Sets of qualitative and quantitative requirements to be attended were defined. System and product design techniques, such as House of Quality, Morphological Matrix and Pugh's Method, have been employed to address the conversion of the project requirements into the Weblab overall solution. Virtual Instrumentation resources have been used to acquire temperature, humidity and air speed signals. The LabVIEW platform was used to support experiment integration and to create the user interface using LabVIEW Remote Panel architecture. The WebLab has been successfully implemented and presently can be accessed within the university network. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper presents a diagnosis framework based on a qualitative model of the process. Starting from a dynamic abstraction procedure under a defined operating mode a fuzzy partitioning of the variables evolution is made, defining for each measured or observable variable a number of qualitative states. Then time Fuzzy intervals representing the moment of state change are defined. The process behaviour of the operating mode is represented by Time Fuzzy Petri nets (TFPN) model and its evolution is the consequence of events detection due to the partitioning bounds crossing. According to the membership possibility of an event to the estimated time interval and to fuzzy influence knowledge, it is possible to reason about a fault occurrence. The fuzzy data issue from the TFPN components allows evaluating the causes of the fault or failure mode. A model-based diagnosis of a hybrid system is presented. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is an indicator frequently used for measuring efficiency of critical equipment. Typically presents a negative asymmetrical distribution, limited to the interval [0;1]. Due to this characteristic, it is uncommon using statistical control procedures for monitoring OEE. This study aims to contribute to this discussion by presenting an approach for monitoring OEE through statistical control procedures. The OEE/TEEP control chart is presented with sensitization procedures, allowing the user to adapt the results of the monitoring process to the needs of the monitored resource constraint. Performance results are presented based on an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study, with 4551 sets of 20 thousand observations each. One application example is also presented, for illustrating the potential of the proposed control charts.

This article aims to analyze the innovation scores of IT companies and their respective clusters, resulting in a tool for constructing knowledge about these companies and gaining useful information for comparison purposes, since few studies are focused on innovation in Brazilian IT companies, especially microenterprises. A case study methodology was used in this research, and to measure innovation, the model proposed by Edison, Ali and Tonkar (2013) was used. The target audience was the LPA of information technology companies in southwest Paraná, being composed of 50 companies divided into 3 clusters. The data collection was based on a survey with 43 questions built according to the Likert Scale. As a result of the application of the Kruskall-Wallis test, with 5% significance, it was observed that there is a difference between the innovation scores of each cluster, with Clusters 1 and 3 having higher scores. As for the relationship between innovation and turnover, the Spearman Correlation test, with 5% significance, showed that there is a moderate relationship between innovation scores and company turnover. Measuring innovation, both individually and in clusters, is important in the information technology sector because it allows management to see weaknesses and strengths, and implement improvements and changes that ensure increased competitiveness and permanence in the market. © 2017 DEStech Publications.
