This paper presents a framework to support the development of three-dimensional virtual scenarios for an operator training simulator for electrical systems. Given the need to represent a variety of scenarios of interest, this can be an effort and time consuming task. The proposed framework promotes a systematic approach when building scenarios and is supported by tools from the ontology-based domain. An editing tool is also under construction. As it will be discussed in the paper, this approach resulted in the simplification of the scenario building process which is achieved by interchanging descriptions at different levels of abstraction. The descriptions concern the situation to be represented;plant objects' representation, both visual and behavioural, the latter represented as Coloured Petri Nets (CPN) models. © 2014 SciTePress. This paper presents two energy conversion systems with two-phase permanent magnet (PM) machine and a rectifier with reduced number of controlled switches. The topologies are conceived with the purpose of converting wind energy into electrical energy (i.e., a wind energy conversion system (WECS)) for low power applications. Compared with some three-phase generation systems with reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies permit obtaining sinusoidal controlled machine currents, reducing dc-link voltage and dq currents low harmonic distortion. © 2014 IEEE.

Researches on modern wireless identification methods have been focused on RFID techniques and in particular on chipless solutions. A parametric study of folded multi-layer C-sections fabricated on flexible substrates and a chipless RFID tag with single group of folded C-sections are presented in this paper. Full-wave simulations have been done for the folded multi-layer C-section and the chipless RFID tag. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of the utilization of this concept with multi-layer C-sections in temporal multi-frequency encoding technique based on group delay. It has been found that the techniques with folded multi-layer structure offer a significant amount of group delay and highly narrow band delay peaks.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. This article presents considerations and results of practical tests on the use of insulating polyamide monofilament line as the likely replacement for the traditional non-insulating multifilament ropes, employed in online interventions. The use of insulating polyamide monofilament line decreases the necessary time in online interventions, since some safety distances can be reduced. Furthermore, its cost is less than UD 0.08 per meter. The line samples were firstly mechanically aged, providing five different degrees of degradation. electrical tests were performed in all samples, under three conditions: clean, moistened with tap water and moistened with saline water. A traditional insulating hot stick was taken as reference, due to its reliability and long term use in online interventions. The results are promising and indicate a desirable scenario, since the use of such line reduces time and effort, and also increases the process safety. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper shows the use of PBL (Problem-Based Learning) technique as a key to learning VoIP in courses like electrical engineering and Computer Networks in conjunction with open source and the public domain software called Asterisk which was used to create the scenario of the experiment and the problems presented to the students. In order to make the validation, the experiment was applied to students of Bachelor in electrical engineering and in Communication Technology System, undergraduate courses at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Paraíba - IFPB, in the Telephony subject, with promising results. The Asterisk software was presented as a useful and flexible tool for constructing scenarios and problems for the teaching of VoIP technologies and the used approach resulted as effective for improving the attainment of the defined learning objectives.

This paper presents a comparison among three methods for Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) detection. These techniques are based on Power Spectral Density Analysis (PSDA) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). The first method estimates the signal-to-noise ratio of the power spectrum in each stimulus frequency using PSDA, which is called Traditional-PSDA. The second analysis estimates the relation between the difference of the stimulus frequency and its neighbor frequencies, using the power spectrum in these neighbor frequencies, and seeks the neighbor frequency which present the lowest relation value. This technique is referred to Ratio-PSDA. The third and final technique called Hybrid-PSDA-CCA. The performances of the methods were evaluated using a database of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The EEG signals were recorded from 19 volunteers, from which six people present disabilities. They were stimulated with visual stimuli flickering at 5.6, 6.4, 6.9 and 8.0 Hz. The system performance was evaluated considering the accuracy and the Information Transfer Rate (ITR) for each stimulus frequency. The results showed that the Hybrid-PSDA-CCA method achieved the best result with an average accuracy of 91.44%.

This paper presents a proposal of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) to command an autonomous car. This BCI is based on the paradigm of visual evoked potentials (VEP) and event-related desynchronization (ERD). A menu interface is presented to the user with disabilities in order he/she can choose a destination for the autonomous car. The selection of the final destination is performed using visual stimuli flickering at different frequencies, analyzed through the analysis of brain signals present at the occipital region of the user's scalp. The power spectrum of these signals is then obtained, in order to get the frequency of the visual stimulation. Preliminary tests were performed with healthy users and people with disabilities, which reached an average success rate above 90%. The proposed system is also capable of turning on/off the stimuli, thus reducing the fatigue associated with particular visual stimuli.

Manifestations of cognitive and neurobehavioral disorders such as repetitive movements, impaired communication and social interaction level characterize Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD, a condition of unknown etiology and still without cure. Currently, many researches integrate robotics to the treatment of ASD with varied functions that allow interaction with children with this disorder. Therefore, evaluation criteria become important to analyze the efficiency the use of robotics in this interaction. The methods here proposed are Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), System Usability Scale (SUS) and Fitts' Law. The use of such methods of evaluation allows transpose qualitative assessments into quantitative, making the work more robust and reliable.
