Indonesian river's potentials on Mini or Microhydro fuelled power plants has not been maximally explored despite its big potentials of utilization. The 500 MW energy potentials of Mini or Microhydro throughout Indonesia have only reached the point of 4.5% while National Energy Management Blueprint in 2050 targeted 31% of renewable energy (RE) is coming from Micro hydro energy. The applications of 80 mm diameter cross flow turbine in a household scale have drawn an increase in its experience with 450 Watts of power produced through small discharge of 20 liters/second and 3-meter head. Cross flow turbines testing in 130 mm length and 80 mm diameter conducted using Mini/micro hydropower Plant in environmentally friendly power House drum. Lower investment and operational design cost also to be made on its aim to reach community group or individual segments. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This work presents an analysis of the grid-forming Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC), in the frequency domain, when it is controlled through single or dual-loop implementation. The dual-loop approach presents an inner current-loop control gathered with the external voltage-loop control, whereas the single-loop only presents a voltage-loop control for the grid-forming capability. In both cases, the control algorithms were implanted in a natural reference frame, including resonant controllers. The paper follows an impedance-modeling approach for introducing the analytical representation of the MMC in the frequency domain. These representations are, in fact, the linearized Teéenin-equivalent models of the single- and dual-loop grid-forming MMC. The results showed that the inner current-loop control is a feasible approach for damping specific resonant peaks of the Thevenin-equivalent impedance. In other words, the current-control loop adds a resistive parcel in MMC impedance in the frequency range in which the resonant peaks appear. As a consequence, the LC resonance between this impedance and the capacitor bank in the main bus is damped. The article also contains some switching-level EMTDC/PSCAD simulations to validate the work.

This paper presents a single-phase four-leg ac-dc-ac converter, with one leg shared by the grid side and the load side. The proposed topology can generate input and output voltages with seven levels, presenting reduced harmonic distortion, in addition to using reduced voltage switches. The space-vector pulsewidth modulation strategy (SV-PWM), the control technique, the system model, and a comparison with a three-leg topology will be presented. As for performance comparison parameters, harmonic distortion in currents and voltages, the average switching frequency, and semiconductor losses will be used. The topology was simulated and assembled in the laboratory to obtain experimental results.

In this paper, dual Vienna rectifiers are proposed for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) applications with Open-End Winding (OEW) Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). Due to the reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies have reduced costs and high reliability. Besides, they provide a better power quality using the same number of controlled switches than conventional structures presented in the literature, making them very attractive options for industry applications. The system model, space vector modulation, and control strategy are given. Simulation results are provided in order to validate their performance and feasibility.

Treatments based on Virtual Reality have been successfully used in motor rehabilitation of issues such as Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke. Highly immersive Virtual environments combined with biofeedback can be utilized to train functional activities on patients with these motor disabilities. This work details the development of a portable Virtual Reality environment to train upper limbs activities on Spinal Cord Injury subjects. The Virtual Reality environment depicts a personalized physiotherapy room where the user trains elbow and shoulder by reaching 5 spots on table. Also the user have a biofeedback of both hands’ position. Finally this system will be integrated a pilot biomechanical analysis using The Motion Monitor system to compare a group of patients before and after a 6 week intervention with Virtual Reality. The Piecewise Polynomial Interpolation (PPI) function approach is aimed at solving nonlinear programming problems with disjoint feasible regions. In such problems, disjointedness is generally associated with prohibited operating zones, which correspond to bands of values that a variable is not allowed to assume. An analytical implication of such prohibited operating zones is to make the objective function, as well as its domain, discontinuous. The PPI function approach consists in replacing the constraints associated with prohibited operating zones by an equivalent set of equality and inequality constraints, thereby allowing the application of any efficient gradient-based optimization method for solving the equivalent problem. In this paper a new single-phase AC-DC-AC five- level X-type current source converter is proposed. The use of the X-type topology reduces the conduction losses of the converter, whilst the five-level configuration may reduce the total harmonic distortion under lower frequencies, and allows the increase of the power capability of the converter. The novelty of this paper resides on the multilevel configuration being applied to a X-type current source converter. The operation and sine- triangle pulse-width modulation of the proposed converter are presented, as they are validated by simulation results. Besides that, experimental results for the rectifier side (AC-DC) are presented.

Stainless steel has been used in several types of constructions. Although many of their mechanical properties are similar to the properties of carbon steel, their nonlinear characteristics imply in different design rules. This non-linearity mainly affects the response to local and flexural buckling. The Eurocode 3: Part 1-4 (2006) stainless steel design standard can be applied to hot rolled, welded and cold formed products, but the provisions of this code are rather conservative, with a limited application due to the lack of experimental data. Thus, one of those areas that require attention and study concerns the behaviour of columns made of rolled stainless steel angles. This paper describes an experimental campaign made on rolled stainless steel angles under axial compression. The tests were performed on stainless steel rolled angles with lengths varying from 150 mm to 1400 mm while the collapse involved: flexural-torsional and flexural buckling modes. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.

The applications aimed at monitoring and controlling smart homes and buildings, health, industrial environments, traffic, energy consumption, resources, and so on, are being increasingly deployed due to the advantages they provide, increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. In this context Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have become a leading solution providing the appropriate mean to get and collect data and deliver it for their processing. Sensor nodes in a WSN have resource constraints, presenting low processing power and, in some cases, restrictions in power consumption. Resources availability constraints force researchers and engineers to develop proper Operating Systems (OS) aimed at low-power wireless devices, and one of the most important and in active use is the TinyOS. This paper describes an experimental analysis and evaluation which investigates relevant features and evaluates the performance (throughput, network delay, success rate, and energy consumption) of WSN under the constraint of using the low-power-consumption-aimed chosen operating system in an harsh outdoor industrial environment for with two different protocols: Active Message (AM) layer protocol and the fully 802.15.4 compliant protocol stack TKN15.4. Based on the results we conclude that TKN15.4 is better in energy consumption and success rate. On the other hand, AM protocol allows running multiple services using the same radio, but at the cost of an excessive energy consumption. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents the realization and the experimental tests of a new type of reluctance-based magnetic lead screw (RBMLS) that is attractive for many potential applications. The proposed topology presents structure simplification with the implementation of discretized permanent magnets (PM) and ferromagnetic semi-rings. The proposed RBMLS has PMs only in one of its movable parts, making it suitable for long-stroke applications. The dynamic experimental results for the realized prototype are going to be compared to the 3-D finite-element method (FEM) outcomes. Experimental static results have already been obtained and show good agreement.
