Peripheral pulse harmonic analysis and its clinical application: A systematic review

Introduction: Pulse harmonic analysis is a quantitative and objective methodology within traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used to evaluate pulse characteristics. However, interpreting pulse wave data is challenging due to its inherent complexity. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review and comparison of existing human pulse wave harmonic analysis methods to elucidate their patterns and characteristics. Methods: A systematic review of clinical research reports published from 1990 to 2021 was conducted, focusing on variations in harmonic characteristics across different medical conditions and physiological states. Keyword searches included terms related to analysis methods (e.g., “Pulse Spectrum,” "harmonic analysis," “harmonic index”) and measured indicators (e.g., “vascular response,” "PPG," “Photoplethysmography,” "aortic," “arterial,” "blood pressure"). Supplementary research using PubMed's Mesh terms specifically targeted “Pulse wave analysis” within the methods and statistical analysis domain. Articles were filtered based on predefined criteria, including human participants and research related to pulse pressure or vascular volume changes. Conference papers, animal studies, and irrelevant research were excluded, with literature evaluation scales selected based on the retrieved research reports. Results: Initially, 6487 research reports were identified, and after screening, 50 reports were included in the review. The analysis revealed that low-frequency harmonics increase following vigorous activity or sympathetic excitation but decrease during rest or parasympathetic excitation. Cardiovascular patients exhibited elevated first harmonics associated with the liver meridian, while diabetes patients displayed weakened third harmonics related to the spleen meridian. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by the progressive degeneration of neuronal cells. With the increase in aged population, there is a prevalence of irreversible neurodegenerative changes, causing a significant mental, social, and economic burden globally. The factors contributing to AD are multidimensional, highly complex, and not completely understood. However, it is widely known that aging, neuroinflammation, and excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), along with other free radicals, substantially contribute to oxidative stress and cell death, which are inextricably linked. While oxidative stress is undeniably important in AD, limiting free radicals and ROS levels is an intriguing and potential strategy for deferring the process of neurodegeneration and alleviating associated symptoms. Therapeutic compounds from natural sources have recently become increasingly accepted and have been effectively studied for AD treatment. These phytocompounds are widely available and a multitude of holistic therapeutic efficiencies for treating AD owing to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and biological activities. Some of these compounds also function by stimulating cholinergic neurotransmission, facilitating the suppression of beta-site amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1, α-synuclein, and monoamine oxidase proteins, and deterring the occurrence of AD. Additionally, various phenolic, flavonoid, and terpenoid phytocompounds have been extensively described as potential palliative agents for AD progression. Preclinical studies have shown their involvement in modulating the cellular redox balance and minimizing ROS formation, displaying them as antioxidant agents with neuroprotective abilities. This review emphasizes the mechanistic role of natural products in the treatment of AD and discusses the various pathological hypotheses proposed for AD. © 2023 – IOS Press. All rights reserved.

The utilization of natural fibres often entails a lesser environmental impact when compared to synthetic fibres. Biodegradable natural fibres minimize waste and pollution, and promote sustainability, but their weaker bonds limit their resilience. These issues can be addressed by customizing the composite's mechanical properties with natural and synthetic fibres. In this study, hybrid composites were created using the hand layup method with a novel dissimilar layer arrangement of neem (N), sisal (S), and glass (G) fibre and analyze its mechanical and thermal properties. Experimental observation shows that the GN composite had a higher maximum ultimate tensile strength of 26 N/mm2 than the GS, GNS, and GSN composites. The GN composite had a percentage elongation of 6.33%, similar to the percentage elongation of the GS composite (6.833%), and it also had a higher ultimate shear strength of 50 MPa. The composite GS absorbed 6.6 J energy, higher than the composites GN, GNS, and GNS, which absorbed 6.1 J, 4.5 J, and 4.5 J, respectively. The fractured surface's SEM images were obtained and analyzed for failure. The results demonstrated that the hybridization was effective, and better properties can be obtained by combining neem, sisal, and glass fiber, and it can be used for other requirements, including strength, weight, cost, and ecological impact. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Autophagy is a quintessential process for eliminating molecules, subcellular elements, and damaged organelles to enhance homeostasis, differentiation, development, and survival. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the sophisticated mechanism of autophagy can solely contribute to the knowledge of side effects, drug repurposing, and the development of novel poly-pharmacological strategies regarding autophagy-related diseases. Artificial intelligence approaches' broad applicability in system biology has been a promising method in identifying the autophagy-related (Art) protein, which is vitally important to regulate and control various stages of autophagy formation. Underlying explainable XGBoost and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) models, the important features and predictive model of Art protein were established. Consequently, our model performance achieved a sensitivity of 66.52 %, specificity of 82.77 %, accuracy of 77.32 %, and MCC of 0.430 via a 5-fold cross-validation evaluation. Moreover, we evaluated our model on an independent dataset, and the final results reached a sensitivity of 65.1 %, specificity of 79.1 %, and accuracy of 77.1 %. It is then observed that our model was efficient and strongly recommended for further analysis of physiological mechanisms and the development of drugs regarding autophagy. The dehydration of ethanol into diethyl ether over a SO4/SiO2 catalyst was investigated. The SO4/SiO2 catalysts were prepared by the sulfation method using 1, 2, and 3 M of sulfuric acid (SS1, SS2, and SS3) via hydrothermal treatment. This study is focused on the synthesis of a SO4/SiO2 catalyst with high total acidity that can be subsequently utilized to convert ethanol into diethyl ether. The total acidity test revealed that the sulfation process increased the total acidity of SiO2. The SS2 catalyst (with 2 M sulfuric acid) displayed the highest total acidity of 7.77 mmol/g, whereas the SiO2 total acidity was only 0.11 mmol/g. Meanwhile, the SS3 catalyst (with 3 M sulfuric acid) has a lower total acidity of 7.09 mmol/g due to the distribution of sulfate groups on the surface having reached its optimum condition. The crystallinity and structure of the SS2 catalyst were not affected by the hydrothermal treatment or the sulfate process on silica. Furthermore, The SS2 catalyst characteristics in the presence of sulfate lead to a flaky surface in the morphology and non-uniform particle size. In addition, the surface area and pore volume of the SS2 catalyst decreased (482.56–172.26 m2/g) and (0.297–0.253 cc/g), respectively, because of the presence of sulfate on the silica surface. The SS2 catalyst's pore shape information explains the formation of non-uniform pore sizes and shapes. Finally, the activity and selectivity of SO4/SiO2 catalysts in the conversion of ethanol to diethyl ether yielded the highest ethanol conversion of 70.01% and diethyl ether product of 9.05% from the SS2 catalyst (the catalyst with the highest total acidity). Variations in temperature reaction conditions (175–225 °C) show an optimum reaction temperature to produce diethyl ether at 200 °C (11.36%). © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Objective:Liquid biopsy is a promising, non-invasive diagnostic tool for cancer, offering rapid and cost-effective genomic analysis. It provides a less invasive alternative to traditional tissue biopsies, with potential benefits in monitoring disease progression and detecting minimal residual disease (MRD). However, its clinical integration faces challenges, including utility assessment and workflow adaptation. This study evaluates the value of liquid biopsy in Taiwan from a clinical physician's perspective. Methods:A survey was conducted with 16 physicians specializing in thoracic medicine and hematologic oncology. Participants responded to a 5-point Likert scale to evaluate the timing of liquid biopsy adoption, willingness to incorporate it into clinical practice, and agreement on its role in managing specific clinical conditions. Results:Forty percent of physicians preferred liquid biopsy when tissue samples were unavailable. The inclusion of liquid biopsy under National Health Insurance (NHI) was a key factor in its adoption. Hematologic oncologists showed a stronger preference for liquid biopsy, particularly for MRD testing, compared to their counterparts in thoracic medicine (hematologic oncology vs. thoracic medicine: 4.2 ± 0.83 vs. 3.1 ± 0.60; p value = 0.01). Younger physicians valued turnaround time, while senior physicians prioritized test brand, with a focus on report speed. Conclusion:Physicians are generally less inclined to replace tissue biopsies with liquid biopsy, but hematologic oncologists show more flexibility. Test brand plays a role in physician decision-making, and the inclusion of liquid biopsy under NHI coverage is vital for its broader adoption in Taiwan.

Nowadays, combining multiple drugs is the optimal therapy to decelerate the pathologic process, which contains various underlying adverse effects due to drug-drug interactions (DDIs). Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to evaluate the interaction, pharmacodynamics, and possible side effects between drugs. Over the past years, many AI-based DDI prediction techniques, including both machine learning and deep learning, that harness available big data have been presented. Although significant progressives have been gained through previous methods, improvements are still crucial. In this work, we introduce an ensemble deep neural network that can help to improve the predictive performance of DDIs. As a result, our prediction model could predict 86 types of DDIs on a benchmark dataset with an average accuracy of 93.80%. Our ensemble classifier produces better performance when compared with the existing proposed methods on the same dataset. Our model's high performance places it among the top list of those well-built pharmacovigilance-assisted tools that facilitate the detection of DDIs to support medical decisions and drug development. After working 10 years in Beijing China Andrew returned to Singapore in 2012 to work closely with the top leadership at Singapore Management University on the SMU China & East Asia Initiatives. Thomas Menkhoff is the Professor of Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources (Education) at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business Singapore Management University (SMU). In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

In meeting bio-enterprise needs, university education often revolves around introducing students in the sciences to business, managerial and other professional expertise. This paper introduces the Bio-Enterprise Innovation Expertise Model, an alternative driver for bio-enterprise-relevant education that includes science-focused students, but also draws students from non-scientific fields, which are essential to the success of any bio-enterprise. Students are grounded in the global biotechnology industry and the dynamic of expertise required throughout the innovation process - from science to product. Against a backdrop of current approaches, the experience of the Business of biotechnology (BoB) program at the University of San Francisco (USF) is described. It utilizes the model to cohesively integrate multiple degree programs (business, law, information systems and biotechnology.) With a complement of three lecture courses and four study tours to differing global bioclusters, 95 graduate students from four degree programs undertook 170 BoB courses over five semesters. In terms of extensibility, previously unpublished Council of Graduate Schools research data is presented that shows master's focused institutions out-performing doctoral institutions at the master's level, establishing relevance of the model to all universities. The experience further demonstrates how such programs can evolve incrementally with strategic use of the model, opening numerous options for implementation, and increasing the potential to better serve bio-enterprise.
