The accelerated increase in urbanization is generating reductions in green areas and phenomena such as the heat island;for this reason, greening solutions are sought in buildings with the use of the green wall, to mitigate the increase in surface temperature on the facades of single-family homes;the present study evaluates the behavior of surface temperature and relative humidity outside and inside in homes;and the surface temperature and relative humidity in a reinforced masonry green wall façade with concrete blocks using a hydroponic system with the species Nephrolepis exaltata. The results indicate that the exterior surface temperatures and interior relative humidity are higher on average by 5.5 °C and 3.6% than the interior surface temperatures and exterior humidity of the homes;instead, in the green wall prototype, the surface temperature decreases from 8.5 to 7 °C and the relative humidity increases from 5.1 to 6.8%. It is concluded that the green wall with hydroponic system with the species Nephrolepis exaltata reduces the surface temperature and increases the relative humidity outside the reinforced masonry homes with concrete blocks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The sustainability of building infrastructure has been a growing critical global concern. However, stakeholders often overlook the sustainability aspect of systems in their everyday lives. This paper presents an exploration of the potential of augmented reality (AR) technology as a tool for enhancing public engagement around sustainable systems in buildings. We introduce an innovative approach to address the challenge of gap between sustainable infrastructure and user awareness. Through data collection such as access counts, usage duration, and user feedback, we can evaluate the effectiveness of AR applications in improving awareness and engagement in sustainability. This study illustrates how AR technology can facilitate a deeper connection between the public and sustainable systems, thus paving the way for a more environmentally friendly society. © 2024 ISARC. SMART quality control analysis of pavement condition data for pavement management applications

Assuring the accuracy and reliability of pavement condition data is crucial for effective decision-making in pavement management. Despite existing data collection protocols, concerns persist regarding data quality. This paper introduces SMART, a systematic statistical method designed to analyze the quality of pavement condition data from field surveys for pavement management applications. SMART employs a structured procedure that expands traditional descriptive statistics by applying interrater reliability statistics combined with bootstrapping methods and Modified Blant Altman diagrams to evaluate data quality. A comparative analysis of interrater statistics, including Cohen's Kappa (CK), Interclass Correlation (IC), Krippendorff's Alpha (KA), Percent Agreement (PA), and Weighted Cohen's Kappa (WCK), is conducted in the research study. As a result, the adoption of KA and Modified Bland-Altman diagrams for data analysis is recommended. KA demonstrates versatility across diverse data types, accommodating nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio-level data, while Modified Bland-Altman diagrams facilitate data dispersion analysis to visualize possible bias trends for the condition ratings. A case study is presented to demonstrate the applicability of SMART to analyzing Pavement Condition Index (PCI) data provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) in California. This methodological approach aims to enhance pavement management decisions by ensuring the reliability of condition field survey data through the implementation of robust analytical quality control procedures. © 2024 Tongji University and Tongji University Press

This article presents a study on the structural behavior of transversely prestressed laminated timber slabs,focusing on an innovative approach:vertically misaligned *** misalignment,achieved by sliding vertically the wooden lamellae rather than aligning them,enhances the slab’s cross-section moment of inertia,thereby improving load-bearing capacity and *** involved two groups of structural size specimens:one with vertically aligned lamellae(control group)and the other with misaligned lamellae(study group).Results showed the study group exhibited 42%superior stiffness and 10%less load capacity compared to the *** typically occurred individually in the lamellae,particularly in those with defects or lower modulus of elasticity,concentrated in the middle third of the slabs’free span where tensile stresses *** a higher number of failed lamellae,the study group demonstrated promising *** of prestressing bar indicated no damage at all in the thread,suggesting potential for reducing bar *** findings offer crucial insights into applying these slabs in timber construction as well as to any kind of construction.

The milling of asphalt pavements has been extensively applied as a restoration technique, however, a large quantity of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) waste is generated during this process. Numerous applications have been developed for the reutilization RAP, yet, these approaches are still not based on a rational criterion methodology for cemented soils, especially for fiber-reinforced ones. The goal of this research was to analyze the effect of fiber reinforcement on the mechanical behavior of reclaimed asphalt pavement–powdered rock–Portland cement mixtures, while proposing a rational dosage methodology through the porosity/cement content index (η/Civ). Resilient modulus, split tensile strength, and durability tests were conducted in non-reinforced and fiber-reinforced mixtures. Results have shown that non-reinforced mixtures depicted higher resilient modulus, split tensile strength, and durability when compared to fiber-reinforced ones, implying that fiber addition only hindered the mechanical properties of the specimens. This was associated with the length and diameter of the fiber along with the grain size and particle shape of the reclaimed asphalt pavement. Finally, the η/Civ index was shown to be an appropriate dosage methodology to predict the mechanical behavior of both non-reinforced and fiber-reinforced mixtures. © 2022

Systemic evaluation of spatio-temporal variations in travel time reliability due to a toll road over time

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of toll roads in reducing congestion and improving travel time reliability on streets within its vicinity, over time. The data, from the year 2013 to 2017, for the Triangle Expressway in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina was used in the systemic evaluation process. The spatial and temporal variations in the travel time distributions on the toll road, parallel route, and near-vicinity cross-streets (in a 2-mile buffer) were evaluated. The average travel time (ATT), the 95th percentile travel time (or planning time, PT), the buffer time (BT), and the buffer time index (BTI) were computed for each link by the day-of-the-week and the time-of-the-day. Though there was an improvement in travel time after the speed limit change in the year 2014, the travel time reliability got reduced on the Triangle Expressway. Over time, there was a gradual improvement in BT and BTI. The parallel route reliability decreased significantly over time, whereas the travel time reliability of cross-streets showed a consistent trend. The stabilization of travel time distributions and the reliability measures in the year 2017 indicate that further reduction in performance measures may not be expected in the next few years on the near-vicinity links. © 2020 The Author(s). Multimodal facilities are being built in a majority of urban areas to accommodate both motorized and non-motorized traffic. The resulting transportation system is susceptible to complex interactions between different modes and users. These complex interactions are hard to quantify and capture on a regular basis. There is a need to rely on a microsimulation platform to replicate such real-world scenarios and forecast future conditions. This study focuses on assessing the effect of heterogeneous traffic conditions involving multiple modes like light rail transit (LRT), walking, bicycling, and motorized traffic on vehicle delay at intersections using Vissim traffic simulation software. A 2.5-mile urban arterial corridor comprising of seven at-grade and two grade-separated signalized intersections along US-29 route in the city of Charlotte, NC, USA was chosen for analysis and modeling. Base simulation model was developed by replicating the traffic scenario for the year 2018 (without LRT and non-motorized traffic). External controllers like VisVAP and Viswalk were used to assign signal priority and model heterogenous traffic conditions. The vehicle operational performance of the corridor improved along the major street after the addition of the LRT. An increase in vehicle delay on the major street was observed with an increase in the non-motorized traffic. Contrarily, the operational performance of the cross-streets at at-grade intersections did not see any significant change due to the addition of non-motorized traffic. The proposed framework assists planners to assess the impact of adding a new transit system like LRT and associated non-motorized traffic on the urban corridor. © 2022

Finite element modeling of the seepage flow of water under concrete dams with sheet piles

A finite element model (FEM) is developed to analyze the problem of seepage flow of water under concrete dams with sheet piles. The model was developed using the finite element software ANSYS, based on equivalent thermal analysis and correlation with seepage performance. The issue of water seepage under concrete dams is addressed mathematically. In this study, the effects of several parameters on porous soil seepage velocity distribution are studied. Sheet pile parameters were varied in depth, location and number of sheet piles. The sheet pile with variables of 0, 1, 2, and 3 pieces, location of 0, 0.5, and 1 of dam width, and the depth of the sheet piles varying as 2 and 4 m, respectively. The developed FE models were verified by a previous study and used for further parametric studies. It was concluded that increased sheet pile depth reduces the seepage flow. In addition, the location of the sheet pile is an important factor in seepage velocity, as it might increase the flow away from dam toe in a similar fashion to dam depth effects. Moreover, increasing the number of sheet piles further reduces the seepage velocity in comparison to usage of a single sheet pile. The sheet pile configuration and parameters are integrated with each other and each factor influence the others, resulting in various seepage flow patterns. This study demonstrates that FE modeling can effectively predict seepage flow under concrete dams with sheet piles.

Provisions for seismic detailing of column-beam connections according to SNI 2847:2019

This research discusses seismic detailing for column-beam connections based on the special moment-hoe frame system (SPRMK) stipulated in the concrete regulations of SNI 2847:2019. Exterior-type column-beam connections with beam sizes of 200 mm × 300 mm and column sizes of 300 mm × 300 mm. The beam span is 1450 mm and the column height is 2850 mm. The reinforcement used in the beam diameter D13 as much as 6 pieces with a barge diameter of 8 mm. In the column, the main reinforcement diameter is D16 as much as 8 pieces with a barge reinforcement diameter of 8 mm with a distance of 75 mm. The detailing provisions are based on SNI 2847:2019 specifically in article 18.6, article 18.7, and article 18.8. Based on this provision obtained for detailing the connection of the column including blocks, columns, and joints meet the requirements specified in SNI 2847:2019.

The construction of coastal ports requires the use of materials that meet the demands of the marine environment, to prevent underwater concrete structures from cracking and spalling easily; basalt fiber is used to delay the expansion of concrete and prevent the formation of cracks. This research studies the behavior of concrete for prefabricated piles with Portland Cement Type I and basalt fibers added in 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.6%; the results indicate that the fiber is suitable for concrete, the slump decreases, the compressive strength increases for specimens cured in tap water and sea water, the relationship between resistances does not vary, and the depth of carbonation decreases.
