The textile industry has grown significantly in recent years, reaching a global fiber production of 53 million tons which 12 % are recycled; Construction sector has been using more and more recycled materials from different industrial sources, to apply them in their constructions and to reduce CO2 emissions and final energy consumption. The present study aims to study the behavior of concrete blocks of f´c = 210 kg/cm2 adding polyester textile waste with 3 %, 6 %, 9 %, 12 % and 15 %; void content, compressive strength and thermal conductivity decrease, and water absorption, acoustic insulation and unit price increase by 3 %, 34 % and 16 % compared to conventional concrete block.

The El Niño phenomenon is caused by the change in atmospheric pressures, which produce the accumulation of hot surface waters on the eastern flank of the Pacific Ocean; causing intense rainfall that runs over the surface affecting the urban drainage of the city due to the lack of a permeable pavement; porous concrete allows infiltration of surface water runoff through its pores. The present investigation evaluates porous concrete in the range of w/c relationships of 0.30 and 0.32; the results indicate that the compressive strength, flexural strength and permeability coefficient increase; and that the surface runoff, cost, water footprint and carbon footprint are lower than conventional concrete.

Dynamic pulley damper system (DPDS) as an innovative methodology for a response control system using a block and tackle mechanism to provide enhanced vibration reduction in high-rise buildings, has been proposed. The key aspect of this system is to exponentially increase the damper movement using an amplification mechanism comprising movable pulleys and a wire. This paper presents the relation between the arrangement of the wire's angles, particularly in the amplification part, and the vibration reduction effect. The DPDS is introduced into a center-core high-rise building. Two small building varieties with different core heights are designed; then, a wire is stretched between the frame and the core structures. The capability of the DPDS to control vibration is confirmed via the shaking table test. Additionally, the accuracy of the simulation models is verified by a comparison with the experimental results. Moreover, this paper includes a parametric analysis test to determine the wire-stretching angle for establishing the most efficient design. The results of the above analysis show that the wire-stretching angle influences the seismic performance of the DPDS.

Growing population, rapid urbanization, and increasing travel demand emphasize the need for reliable public transportation systems and sustainable transportation planning. A reliable bus service fosters a more significant, satisfied, and committed base of users. This research focuses on examining the association between on-time performance (OTP) and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics to identify relevant external factors for proactive and reliable public transportation system planning. The analysis was conducted at a bus stop level. Bus arrival/departure data from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) was obtained. The road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics were captured within 0.25-mile and 0.50-mile buffers. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to understand the association between OTP and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics by day of the week and time of the day. The results show that OTP is associated with external factors such as the number of signalized or cul-de-sac/dead-end intersections, number of lanes, network density, population, income (median and total), and land use types related to residential and commercial/employment purposes within the bus stop vicinity. The findings provide vital insights for transit agencies to enhance scheduling, service and maximize benefits, effectively utilize available resources, plan, and provide equitable services to all riders. © 2023 The Author(s)

In this study, an interval two-stage stochastic programming (ITSP) method is proposed for regional solid waste system management system under uncertainty. The ITSP approach can incorporate random events with punishment policies when the promised allowable waste loading is exceeded. An ITSP-based solid waste system management model is developed with an objective of minimizing economic cost in landfill and waste-to-energy (WTE) facility, which include operation, transportation, expansion costs and revenue. A case study in the city of Baotou, China is developed to manage the solid waste system. Three scenarios associated with different economic incentives are employed for analyzing the optimized solutions based on the preference of decision-makers. Under scenario without subsidy, the total system cost would be from 164.13 to 234.37 million yuan, however, due to the national policy subsidies, WTE would make profit and the total system cost would be negative (e.g. from -83.15 to -17.66 million yuan). The results indicated that a higher waste flow to landfill corresponds with a higher system cost, while more wastes transported to WTE facility lead to a lower economic cost. Financial subsidies for WTE facility could compensate the system loss and promote garbage resource utilization to some extent. � 2019 Canadian Society for civil engineering. All rights reserved.

The increasing demand for cement in the world of construction can have an extraordinary effect, especially in the production of cement which produces CO2. So we need an alternative material as a substitute and even replace the role of cement. Utilization of coal waste in the form of fly ash is in the spotlight to be maximized. Therefore this research was conducted as an alternative contribution to the solution using geopolymer concrete in terms of setting time and compressive strength with variations in the addition of cement. The method used is experimental in the laboratory which produces qualitative data for further numerical calculations. Tests focused on the setting time and compressive strength of concrete using 5 mix designs with cement variations ranging from 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% of the use of fly ash. The results of the setting time with the highest duration, namely 100% FA=1.5, 95 minutes initial setting time and 225 minutes final setting time, then decreased to the lowest duration, namely 60% FA: Pc 40%=1.5. The initial setting time is 15 minutes and the final setting time is 37 minutes. The highest concrete compressive strength results in the MD 4 mix design with 70% FA mixture: Pc 30%=1.5, which is 43.3 MPa. While the lowest compressive strength is the design mix MD 1 with a mixture of 100% FA=1.5 of 21.8 MPa.

Currently,China has entered the period of land-sea coordinated planning,yet there are few studies on the interaction between land use intensity and sea eco-security in coastal ***,taking the coastal zone of Xiamen as an example,this paper develops a comprehensive system to evaluate the coupling degree between spatial utilization intensity and eco-security based on the coupling degree theory in *** the paper quantitatively analyzes and identifies the coupling coordination degree of various shore sections into four categories:well-coordinated and highly-coupled,moderately-coordinated and moderately-coupled,moderately-coordinated and slightly-coupled,and primary-level coordinated and ***,it puts forward spatial planning guidelines for the four types of shore sections on the basis of land-sea ***,reserved ecological section should follow the principle of giving priority to the marine ecosystem,and strictly protecting the ecosystem and controlling development;ecological promotion section should follow the principle of optimizing land development based on the sea resources,and reserving space for transformation;restricted development section should follow the principle of land-sea balance,and only allowing low-impact development activities to achieve synchronous land-sea development;development leverage section should follow the principle of optimizing marine development based on land resources,giving full play to the advantages of coastal resources and featured coastal space,and achieving spatial optimization in accordance with people-oriented principles and local *** research intends to provide a scientific basis for coastal zone planning and decision-making and a paradigm guide for gulf cities to coordinate the marine ecosystem and land development.

Beach Topographic Change Analysis Using Multi-temporal UAV Data

A time-serial topographic change was performed using two kinds of surveying methods, including direct measurement and indirect remote sensing technology for beach topography surveillance. Compared with reference topographic data, the root mean square error was 0.169 m. From May, 2018 to March, 2019, multi-temporal beach topographic change results indicated that the distance between baseline and shoreline varied in the range of −24.82∼9.58 meter, and weekly variates are −3.16∼0.45 m. The UAV technique can be efficiently used to detect topographic change information in the coastal area.

The deterioration of the surfaces of the constructions made with mortar C/A 1: 5 of Portland cement, are produced by being exposed to the emission of toxic gases emanating from the growing automobile fleet, this problem causes alternatives to be sought in order to counteract its effect on buildings and the environment. A new method to deal this problem is the incorporation of the titanium dioxide photocatalyst (TiO2) into the Portland cement mortar, which can develop self-cleaning and air purification properties to be in contact with sunlight. This work seeks to introduce this organic component to the Portland cement mortar, used for the facade charging and structural elements, for this purpose, different percentages (5%, 7.5% and 10%) of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are added and the properties of the modified mortars making use of [1] compression tests, [2] fluidity tests, [3] absorption tests and [4] photocatalytic activity tests with which the self-cleaning capacity was verified. This study concludes that the best percentage of titanium dioxide addition is 5%, with which the Portland cement mortar is granted self-cleaning property without substantially damaging its mechanical properties.

Vegetation optical depth (VOD) depends on the water, structure, and biomass of vegetation. Here, we propose a multi-sensor approach to isolate the water component from the VOD and to retrieve gravimetric vegetation moisture (m g ) in the western United States. The approach estimates VOD from radar and LiDAR data and minimizes the differences between these estimates and SMAP/AMSR2 VOD observations. This minimization allows to obtain the best fitting value of m g with help of a dielectric model. Results are consistent both in space (drier vegetation in arid areas) and time (drier vegetation in drier months). The mg estimates are in the same range than in situ mg data, with some underestimation (bias ~ -0.07 kg/kg). Statistical results are reasonable (r ~ 0.45, RMSE ≤0.10 kg/kg), yet the different spatial and temporal representation of in situ and remote measurements have an impact in the direct comparisons. Our results highlight the potential for developing new vegetation moisture datasets based on VOD decomposition.
