The paper presents a novel three-stage algorithm for very-low-light video denoising and enhancement. The proposed technique invokes twice, in the first and the third stages, the well-known Non-Local Means (NLM) method for spatial and temporal denoising: it is well adapted to the application, leading to the definition of a novel NLM tool. The intermediate stage performs a custom tone adjustment specifically aimed at enlarging the dynamic range of very dark videos. The overall approach transforms very dark videos into more watchable ones, effectively reduces very high noise, and all in all, produces high quality restored image sequences outperforming the recent state-of-the-art results. Additionally, the first and third stages can be combined as a two-step filtering scheme for normal-light videos: the novel denoising solution achieves a heavy noise removal, while reducing motion blur artifacts and preserving image details.

In this paper, we employ fluid‐structure interaction (FSI) systems with both immersed flexible structures and free surfaces to study singular value decomposition (SVD) based model reduction methods and traditional mode superposition methods. Our numerical results confirm that SVD‐based model reduction methods are reliable. Excellent comparisons are obtained between original transient solutions and recovered data composed with only a few dominant principal components. For acoustoelastic FSI systems, we employ a three‐field mixed finite element formulation with displacement, pressure, and vorticity moment unknowns. Our numerical examples also demonstrate that mixed finite element formulations can predict different ranges of coupled frequencies and mode shapes without the contamination of spurious nonzero frequencies.

Monte Carlo based methods such as path tracing are the only to do the physically correct simulations of global illumination. Due to its high capability to exploit acceleration structures and SIMD parallelism of modern processors, path tracing is becoming potential in the sense of real time. Basically path tracing generates images with heavy noise. Adaptive sampling is an interesting way to produce less noisy images. In this paper, we make use of both the intra-pixel information and the inter-pixel information to propose a new refinement criterion for adaptive sampling in path tracing to lower the Monte Carlo noise appeared in the generated image. For the intra-pixel information, we take advantage of the non-extensive Tsallis entropy as a homogeneity measurement of sample values within a pixel. For the inter-pixel information, we develop an innovative inter-pixel coherence measure based on the magnitude of spatial gradient and the impulsiveness of the distribution. Implementation results demonstrate that our novel method can perform significantly better than the previously typical ones.

To compare the performance of two speech coders, it is necessary to have some indicator of the intelligibility and quality of the speech produced by each coder. The term intelligibility usually refers to whether the output speech is easily understandable, while the term quality is an indicator of how natural the speech sounds. It is possible for a coder to produce highly intelligible speech from low quality, in that the speech may sound very machine-like and the speaker is not identifiable. On the other hand, it is unlikely that unintelligible speech would be called high quality, but there are situations in which perceptually pleasing speech does not have high intelligibility. In this paper the most common measures of speech enhancement models suited for speech recognition with specific emphasis on wavelet based approach are presented.

Amongst all atmospheric phenomena, rain is probably the most commonly used effect to create realistic immersive virtual environments, and to set the mood in movie storytelling. Although not immediately obvious, the beauty of rain emanates from the interplay of the involved light-matter interaction, generating effects of refraction and reflection, coupled with scattering effects. At the core, rain consists of water droplets under the influence of gravity. Current state of the art methods of generating rain are either computationally burdening, or not realistic enough. The key idea we introduce in this paper is to consider these droplets as transparent objects in the environment matting (EM) framework. This enables careful preprocessing to discover the light transport phenomena. We end up with a free-viewpoint real-time technique of simulating realistic droplets and rain in novel environments.
