A "graphics for vision" approach is proposed to address the problem of reconstruction from a large and imperfect data set: reconstruction on demand by tensor voting, or ROD-TV. ROD-TV simultaneously delivers good efficiency and robustness, by adapting to a continuum of primitive connectivity, view dependence, and levels of detail (LOD). Locally inferred surface elements are robust to noise and better capture local shapes. By inferring per-vertex normals at sub-voxel precision on the fly, we can achieve interpolative shading. Since these missing details can be recovered at the current level of detail, our result is not upper bounded by the scanning resolution. By relaxing the mesh connectivity requirement, we extend ROD-TV and propose a simple but effective multiscale feature extraction algorithm. ROD-TV consists of a hierarchical data structure that encodes different levels of detail. The local reconstruction algorithm is tensor voting. It is applied on demand to the visible subset of data at a desired level of detail, by traversing the data hierarchy and collecting tensorial support in a neighborhood. We compare our approach and present encouraging results.

Estimating intrinsic geometric properties of a surface from a polygonal mesh obtained from range data is an important stage of numerous algorithms in computer and robot vision, computergraphics, geometric modeling, industrial and biomedical engineering. This work considers different computational schemes for local estimation of intrinsic curvature geometric properties. Five different algorithms and their modifications were tested on triangular meshes that represent tessellations of synthetic geometric models. The results were compared with the analytically computed values of the Gaussian and mean curvatures of the non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBs) surfaces, these meshes originated from. This work manifests the best algorithms suited for that indeed different algorithms should be employed to compute the Gaussian and mean curvatures.

This paper introduces an effective modification for the catalyst regeneration system used to improve the octane number of the complex naphtha reformers in the refiners. Thinking for modification is initiated due to the serious problems that may happen as a result of uncontrolled temperature rise over the permissible limits in the regeneration tower (problems have been actually happened in some companies). Modification methodology depends on an addition of a new temperature element into the most effective area of the regeneration tower, and then a fuzzy control module is built in the existing distributed control system (DCS) to automatically control the system behavior. This approach will enhance system performance and improve factor of safety over the supplier regulation, which mainly depends on the human behavior, and tracing the temperature before the critical area. Through this paper, the catalyst regeneration process is described, the temperature rise problem is classified and several solutions to prevent such problem are proposed. Simulated results are presented to show system response with the proposed modification and to validate such solution for practical implementation.

An e‐fulfillment system is designed to meet the high order volume and stringent customer service requirements of global business‐to‐consumer e‐commerce. The system converts the traditional warehouse into a multi‐channel e‐fulfillment center. In the e‐commerce environment, some of the toughest decisions must be made on little or no hard information. In this study, the nature of e‐business and the typical fulfillment process are discussed. The authors further examine the strategy and operational requirements for e‐fulfillment. This article is concluded with the implication of a successful e‐fulfillment system, a suggested design of an e‐fulfillment center, and the future research focuses.

We propose a new prototype Chinese-to-Korean machine translation system called TOTAL-CK, a prototype transfer based MT system designed for the large-scale practical domain. TOTAL-CK consists of the components of analysis, transfer, and generation. In this paper, we mainly discuss the transfer issues resulting from stylistic structural differences between Chinese and Korean. The dependency grammar formalism is employed for Chinese parsed trees and their equivalent Korean parsed trees. We deal with structural transfer ambiguities that arise when a given source language syntactic pattern is potentially translated by a number of different target language syntactic patterns. Also, structural transfer ambiguities are the major complex transfer problem appearing during dependency transferring, in an SVO pattern that most frequently occurs in Chinese sentences. There are three types of structural transfer ambiguity: transitive transfer, subject-governing transfer and verb-governing transfer. They are discovered by analyzing the ambiguity and the related formalism. Finally, we present a thesaurus-based disambiguation approach for dependency structural transfer, which is adopted in TOTAL-CK. Our approach achieves 94.6% in precision for SVO sentences and 93.5% for overall sentences.

This paper presents a new wavelet based image denoising method, which includes a Bayesian framework and classical thresholding methods. The main goal here is computing for each wavelet coefficient the probability of being sufficiently clean. The three main novelties of our approach are: (1) estimating local regularity of an image and distinguishing between useful edges and noise; (2) initializing the mask by thresholding the average cone ratio (ACR); and (3) probabilistic shrinkage of wavelet coefficients, using a statistical sampler. The main advantage of this algorithm is improved denoising performance over earlier techniques, which is demonstrated in the results.

Knowledge management (KM) is the process of leveraging organizational knowledge to deliver long‐term advantage to a business and is based on a business strategy that involves engineering various knowledge‐centric business processes and developing organization structures to support these. These, in turn, require technology to capture, codify, store, disseminate and reuse the knowledge. Successful deployment of KM is not a simple process. This paper suggests that a major reason for the failure of many KM projects is the absence of a well‐defined strategic plan to guide implementation. This paper discusses the strategic planning needs of the KM deployment process, and develops a framework that could be used specifically by engineering firms to guide the KM implementation process.
