Important factors in determining the efficiency of TPV systems

Part I divides the TPV system into its five major components—combustor, emitter, radiant transfer system, photocell, and power conditioner. Using the best data available to the authors from experimental studies, plus theoretical analysis where useful, the probable upper bound of efficiency for each part of a practical TPV device is estimated. A probable overall TPV efficiency of 13% is obtained for a combustion flame temperature of 2000 °C and a fibrous ytterbium oxide emitter temperature of 2000 K. If a flame temperature of 2300 °C and emitter temperature of 2000 °C are possible, this efficiency may approach 22%. Experimental plus analytical studies of the combustor, emitter and radiant transfer system are recommended that should determine what the maximum TPV system efficiency is likely to be. These studies would also give the design data needed for building a practical TPV device. Part II is an analytical model of the radiant transfer system for a fibrous or solid emitter plus thermal and photocell shields. The model is used to calculate the radiant transfer efficiency for several cases using experimental data on fibrous ytterbium oxide from studies by Parent, Nelson and Olow(6) and Nelson(8)(12) These data from the model are an important input into the conclusions drawn in Part 1. The development of the model was supported by the Gas Research Institute, Basic Research Group, Chicago, IL, The Brooklyn Gas Co., NY, The Southern California Gas Co., CA; on Contracts for TPV research by the Tecogen Division, Thermo Power Corp., Waltham, MA.

Visualization and animation tools may become extremely important aids in the understanding, verification, and performance tuning of parallel computations. Presently, however, the use of visualization has had only a limited use for enhancing parallel computation. We hypothesize that one of the primary reasons for the limited use of visualization tools in parallel program development is the difficulty of acquiring the information necessary to drive the visual display. Our approach to this impediment focuses on integrating visualization support directly into a distributed computing system. Central to this integration is the addition of a logical clock that prevents the timestamps of events from violating causality. The implementation requires the "piggybacking" of a negligible amount of extra header information on system messages and the impact on performance is minimal. This results in a system that produces useful visualizations with no extra effort required by the applications programmer. Also integrated into the distributed system is support which simplifies the creation of programmer-defined, application-specific visualizations, unique to each new parallel program developed.

He received both the Diploma and Ph.D. Degree from the Electrical Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Athens in 1986 and 1992 respectively. During the period 1992–1993 he was a member of the Staff of the Hellenic Navy Research Centre working in the area of underwater acoustics. Since 1994 he has been a researcher at the National Technical University of Athens Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Telecommunications Laboratory. His interests include data mobile and integrated services networks. Panagiotis P. Demestichas was born in Athens Greece in 1967. He received the Diploma in electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) Athens in 1993. At present he is a research assistant at NTUA working towards his Ph.D. dissertation. He participated in the BRITE/EURAM-EURATN and in the RACE-TOMQAT and MONET projects. His research interests are in the areas of broadband and mobile networks queueing theory algorithms and complexity theory. He is a Member of the Technical Chamber of Greece. Miltiades E. Anagnostou was born in Athens in 1958. He received the Electrical Engineers Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1981. During the period 1981–1987 he was a teaching assistant at NTUA. In 1987 he received his Ph.D. in the area of computer networks. In 1987–1989 he served the Greek army in the Air Force Research and Development Center. In 1989–1991 he was a Lecturer and since 1991 he has been an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Division Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the NTUA. The reason why cellular mobile telephony systems exist is that they allow frequency reuse. Dynamic allocation algorithms improve the network efficiency and the service quality. Dynamic allocation is closely related to the following instantaneous allocation problem: given a number of channels (frequencies), a cell structure and the number of calls to be accommodated in each cell, find the optimum allocation of channels to cells subject to restrictions concerning the distance of cells, where the same frequency can be reused. In this paper we formulate and solve this problem by showing that it can be reduced to a 0-1 programming problem. Finally we present results, and draw subsequent conclusions.

Dr. Wilson is a member of the Human Factors & Ergonomic Society Transportation Research Forum American Society of Engineering Managers American Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. He is a CG licensed First Assistant Engineer an FAA Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument Airplane and Certified Professional Ergonomist. Michael E. Pollard:is currently President of Chevy Chase Technology Corporation a computer systems engineering firm located in Chevy Chase Maryland. Mr. Pollard graduated from Brandeis University in 1990 and served as a legislative assistant in the U.S. Senate concentrating on science and technology issues until early 1995. This article marks Mr. PollaRD's seventh publication in the field of science and technology.

Current technology centric U.S. maritime manning reduction trends have led both the maritime industry and government policy makers to revisit the safety issue. This paper identifies the manning processes, examines, and assesses process boundaries, and evaluates relevant safety issues. This examination finds that ample opportunities exist for both improved ship safety and proper business process re-engineering, but that current applications of technology will yield dangerous results unless human factors or ergonomics is included.

He is engaged in research on application of graph theory especially in computer-assisted VLSI. He is the recipient of the Paper Award in 1969 1973 and 1985 the Yonezawa Prize in 1971 and the Karuizawa CAS Workshop Special Award in 1989 I.E.I.C.E. Japan. He became an IEEE Fellow in 1992.

In via-minimization in topological routing on a k-layer, an equivalent transformation of a t-terminal net to a collection of two-terminal nets is considered. An equivalent transformation to a special structure of two-terminal nets, which is called a two-terminal net-body, is presented for the case when available vias are through-hole vias and t less than or equal to k and for the case when available vias are adjacent-layer vias and t = 3. The key issue is the proof that the routings of the t-terminal nets in optimum routing are classified into a few fixed number of cases with respect to the division of the layers and that each net is equivalently replaced with a two-terminal net-body.

Korany:received the BS degree in Electrical Engineering (Electronics Section) from the University of Alexandria Egypt in 1971 the MS degree in Electrical Engineering (Computer Section) from Ain Shams University Cairo Egypt in 1977 and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering (Digital Systems) from Florida Institute of Technology U.S.A. in 1982. He is currently an associate professor of Computer Science at the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research University of Alexandria. His research interests are in data communications and multimedia applications computer networks image processing and pattern recognition. Abdel-Latif A. Abdel-Bary:obtained the BEng degree in Electronics Technology from Arab Maritime Transport Academy in 1986. In 1995 he obtained the MSc degree in Information Technology from the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research Alexandria University. His current research interests include ICAL hypermedia and automatic programming.

In this article a multimedia computer-assisted learning (MCAL) system is presented. The major objective of this work was to investigate the potential of using such systems as tools for transferring instructional course information through various types of computer media as opposed to the classic CAL systems. The philosophy and techniques employed to design the system are investigated. Usage of the implemented system and its merits have been illustrated through its application to teach engineering students and technicians the theory and concepts of marine radar. System design, implementation, test, and revision phases are presented and discussed.

An implementation of parallel production systems with two load balancing mechanisms

He is an Associate Professor of School of Information Science Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST). HIS research interests include parallel computer architecture for databases and data engineering. He is a member of IPS I.E.I.C.E. JSAI IEEE and ACM.

An implementation method is proposed for parallel production systems on multicomputers, or message-passing computers, to speed up execution time. There have been proposed parallel production systems using hash mechanism, but they cause a skewed load distribution problem. To obtain more efficient balance of load, the method addressed here and named clustered parallel production systems (CPPS) adopts two load balancing strategies: hash and demand-driven. Taking account of the cost of termination detection, the execution time of the CPPS and simple hash method are estimated, and implement on an nCube2. The estimation meets the execution results. The CPPS provides much better load balance to improve scalability.

He has worked in the fields of communication system design mobile communication network and spacecraft payload design. He is currently working on the development of satellite-based ATM transport and switching architectures for BISDN and Defense Information System Network amlications. Dr. Pond is a member of IEEE. Victor O. K. Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his SB SM and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge Massachusetts in 1977 1979 and 1981 respectively. Since February 1981 he has been with the University of Southern California (USC) LOS Angeles California where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. He has published 150 technical papers and has lectured and consulted extensively around the world. His research interests include high-speed communication networks personal communication networks intelligent networks distributed databases queueing theory graph theory and applied probability. Dr. Li is very active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) having been a member of the Computer Communications Technical Committee since 1983 and having served as Chairman from 1987–1989. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, the required time for establishing a mobile packet radio network using the virtual circuit and time division multiple access protocol developed in Part 1 is analysed. Tools are developed to determine the virtual circuit and network set-up times in terms of the channel bandwidth allocated to establish and maintain the network. The tools are then extended to include the effects of user mobility. Then these results are combined with the network capacity results of Part 1 to analyse the trade-off between the data rate and set-up time of the network. Next a hierarchical architecture is proposed and the network data rate versus set-up time trade-off of this architecture is analysed using these tools. This architecture is shown to both provide a higher data rate and establish faster than flat networks of the same number of nodes.

Undersea technologies in the former Soviet Union

作者： DeHaemer, DJ Dr. Michael J. DeHaemer:is Director of the World Technology Evaluation Center and the Japanese Technology Evaluation Center at Loyola College in Baltimore. He has directed more than a dozen studies of technologies in foreign countries under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation ARPA Departments of Energy and Commerce and other agencies. He has a continuing interest in assessing foreign technologies in comparison to the United States.—-On the faculty of the Sellinger School of Business at Loyola College Dr. DeHaemer is a former department chairman and an associate professor of information systems and decision sciences. He teaches the strategic use of information technology and human-computer interface design. His research includes user performance with automated speech recognition systems for computers and business applications of artificial intelligence. Dr. DeHaemer completed an earlier career as a submarine officer including command of a ballistic missile submarine. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame and a Master's degree in Operations Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School. He has an M.B.A. an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

A team of experts, assembled by the World technology Evaluation Center, visited twenty-five locations in Russia and Ukraine to observe the state of undersea technologies. Academic sites, basic research institutes, industrial development laboratories, and oceanographic operating bases were visited. The report highlights specific technologies that support research submersibles;and critiques the strengths and weaknesses of the ocean technologies establishment. Russia and Ukraine were found to have a number of strengths, especially in test facilities, a large fleet of surface and submersible research vessels, and highly educated and qualified engineers and scientists. Although political and economic conditions need to be over-come, there is motivation for many cooperative commercial or research ventures with both government institutes and new private companies in Russia and Ukraine.
