Retention is an issue that has been faced by many engineering colleges due to the difficulties and lack of knowledge about what it really is to be an engineer. The first 3 years of the course are particularly intense and hard. A way to overcome this period might be achieved by implementing a new kind of course, more enticing and dynamic. That is the idea of COPEC's engineering education research team, to embed a program with a more interesting activity for students in the first year. It is what has been named after “The Year of Discovery”, a short-term workshop in order to show students the possibilities of performing as engineers in a global environment - a project developed for a private university, in order to decrease the retention rate in their engineering programs.

Interpreting molecular cytogenomic findings that cover the human genome (e.g., microarray results) is challenging, as it requires accessing and working with multiple, diverse sources of data that are often large and heterogeneous. These data need to be accessed, queried, and simultaneously integrated to achieve open-ended goals, such as interpreting findings to make diagnoses and engage in genetic counselling. Currently, typical workows of users are laborious, as data sources are often not integrated and must be accessed separately. Furthermore, large document sets often have to be combed through to assist in interpretation. Analytics tools are needed to help users process and distill large bodies of information into manageable sizes so the most relevant portions can be focused on. Current tools typically do not offer support for interactively exploring and engaging with visual representations of important entities and relationships (e.g., chromosomes, gene-phenotype relationships, and scientific articles). We present VErdICT, a visual analytics tool that can support users in their interpretation of molecular cytogenomic findings. A participatory design approach was taken to make VErdICT human-centered. We describe its development, usability and usefulness, and outline some future research challenges. © 2015 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

With the advent of cloud computing, most of the data owners are outsourcing their complex data management systems from local sites to the commercial public cloud for great flexibility and economic savings. But sensitive data has to be encrypted before outsourcing, for protecting data privacy. However data encryption makes effective data utilization a challenging task. Traditional data utilization based keyword search on encrypted data is a difficult task. Thus, enabling an encrypted cloud data search service is of paramount importance. Considering the large number of data users and documents in the cloud, it is necessary to allow keyword search request and return documents in the order of their relevance to these keyword. In this paper we proposed a system that supports multi-owner keyword ranked search over the encrypted cloud data with good key management scheme. Thorough security and performance analysis show that the proposed scheme guarantees high security and practical efficiency.

Demands for cloud video surveillance systems are growing rapidly. Addressing to the issue of low energy-efficiency in cloud video datacenters, a task scheduling method using a time-clustering-based genetic algorithm is proposed. Firstly, an off-line scheduling model with SLA (service level agreement) time constraint is proposed after the analysis of the constrain relationship between the SLA and surveillance tasks. Then, a time-clustering-based genetic algorithm (TCGA) is proposed to solve the model for an optimal energy-efficient solution. According to the solution, the service quality is guaranteed and the total operating time of virtual machines is minimized. Meanwhile, idle virtual machines are shut down to reduce energy consumption. Simulations of large scale tasks scheduling are conducted. Several comparison experiments verify that the proposed method can improve the resource utilization greatly and achieve energy saving extremely.

The data centers of cloud video surveillance (CVS) systems based on Hadoop have a couple of common problems such as large energy consumption, low power utilization, etc. Addressing to the issue of reducing energy consumption while guaranteeing quality of service, we propose an energy-aware workload balancing method for efficient data storage management in cloud video data centers. A dynamic adjusting algorithm is designed to control the running status of nodes in the data centers according to the access frequency of video data blocks for the purpose of reducing the energy consumption, in order to eliminate the potential influence on the service quality posed by the changes of running status of nodes, the workload balancing between nodes in ring network topology is executed, a nonlinear programming model is established to obtain the minimum number of data blocks transferred during the workload balancing. Experimental results in the GridSim simulation environment show that the proposed method can achieve more energy saving and better performance than the original Hadoop.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the damage to electrical and electronic devices owing to lightning surge-induced overvoltage/overcurrent, in Japan. In particular, the lightning surge overcurrent that flows through grounding lines can cause serious damage to electronic equipment. To understand the phenomenon of the lightning surge current propagation in the ground poles, it is important to understand the lightning current propagation in the soil. We have developed a detection circuit for determining the lightning current distribution in the soil and have measured the lightning current caused by rocket-triggered lightning in the soil. We have observed the lightning current in the soil owing to a negative precursor discharge at a depth of 0.1 m, 30 m from the triggered flash point.

We present here an application of Grover's search algorithm for quantum way web search engine. Grover's search algorithm mathematical expression use for interconnected set of servers functions. In this research article we split whole network connection into finite number of blocks. Subsequently, analyze single block function, since each block has similar function as well as architecture of a network. Furthermore, each server consists of n number of streams. From these streams amplify that stream which matches with intended entity. Rest of stream keeps unchanged in all set of servers. Superposition uses in network servers for efficient search a specific entity. Addition of it, n-qubits Hadamard H ⊗n as well as unitary transformation U f uses for activation intended signal. Through H ⊗n and U f enhance search operation in a network. Through experimental set up we find that an entity efficient search by using linear optical technique.

Mobile Adhoc Networks is a self organizing network composed of mobile terminals connected by wireless links. Adhoc Networks are created dynamically without any preexisting network infrastructure Ad-hoc networks are very useful in situations like emergency search and reuse operations and meetings where people want to quickly share information. This network does not have any central administration, hence there are no designated routes, all the nodes can serve as routers for each other, and data packets are forwarded from node to node to node in multi hop fashion. Cluster based Mobility and Energy Aware (CMEA) routing protocols is used to find the reliable route in a cluster networks. The clustered network avoids path breaks and long path delay. When applying the energy and mobility aware metric over clustered network gives reliable route between Source and Destination. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an evolution of past platforms, preserving successful characteristics of traditional architectures and bringing with it distinct principles that follow service orientation in support service oriented enterprise. It forces the network to improve the reliability, security, integrity etc. By applying the proposed XML technique for encrypting the secure data improves the content delivery over the CMEA network. Therefore SOA based secure data transmission over the reliable route improves the network performance.

In this paper, we had analyzed a large scale Diabetic data sets for several patients to find the length of time taken for treatment for each class of Diabetes and the risk of re-admission of diabetic patients performing Bigdata analytics, the type of diabetes and its outcome which acted as a high risk sample of patient data sets. We have collected and integrated different sources of diabetic information for several patients, from primary and secondary treatment information to administrative information, to analyze novel view of patient care processes such as type of treatments and every patient behaviors on which results multifaceted nature of chronic care that we take into our account to predict the survival factors and length of stay. Nowadays by using electronic medical equipments with high quality and high degree calibrations, we are able to gather large amounts of real-time diabetic data sets. The requires the usage of distributed platforms for making BigData analysis that results on making decisions based on available data and its trends. This type of Bigdata analysis allows geographical and environmental information of patients’ enables the capability of interpreting the ethnicity of data gathered and extract new analysis to identify survival options and treatment timelines (LOS) from them.

Diabetic Retinopathy Detection Based on Eigenvalues of the Hessian Matrix

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a medical condition caused by fluctuating insulin level in the blood which causes vision loss in case of severity. Timely treatment of such risks requires identification of the first clinical symptoms like microaneurysms (MAs) and hemorrhages (HMAs). The presence of those symptoms are visible in the digital color photographs of the retina and appear as round dark red spots in the image. In this paper, two approaches in the detection of MAs and HMAs are proposed. First, the semi automated approach applies semi automated hessian-based candidate selection algorithm (SHCS) followed by thresholding to detect true MAs and HMAs. The automated approach applies automated hessian-based candidate selection algorithm (AHCS) followed by feature extraction and SVM classification that uses twenty images for training manually annotated by medical domain experts. Implementations of both the approaches have been tested on real world images from retinal scan. From the results, the detection rate of automated algorithm when compared with that of the semi automated algorithm has been found to be significantly lesser with a probability p<0.005.
