Face detection has become a fundamental task in computer vision and pattern recognition applications. This paper describes a system for face detection using data mining approach. The proposed face detection method is a two phase process comprising of training and detection phase. In the training phase, training image is transformed into an edge and non-edge image. Maximal Frequent Itemset Algorithm (MAFIA) is used to mine positive and negative feature patterns from edge and non-edge images respectively. Based on the feature patterns mined, a face detector is constructed to prune non-face candidates. In the detection phase, sliding window approach is applied to the test image in different scales. Experimental results on FEI face database show good performance even across different orientations, pose and expression variations to a certain extent.

In computer science in general and in particular the field of high performance computing and supercomputing the term scalable plays an important role. It indicates that a piece of hardware, a concept, an algorithm, or an entire system scales with the size of the problem, i.e., it can not only be used in a very specific setting but it's applicable for a wide range of problems. From small scenarios to possibly very large settings. In this spirit, there exist a number of fixed areas of research on scalability. There are works on scalable algorithms, scalable architectures but what are scalable devices? In the context of this chapter, we are interested in a whole range of display devices, ranging from small scale hardware such as tablet computers, pads, smart-phones etc. up to large tiled display walls. What interests us mostly is not so much the hardware setup but mostly the visualization algorithms behind these display systems that scale from your average smart phone up to the largest gigapixel display walls. © 2014, Springer-Verlag London.

Natural disasters can cause huge loss of life, enormous amounts of property damage to the local communities. Although it is impossible to avoid the natural disasters, human sufferings can be reduced by adopting information technologies to the disaster response missions. In this paper, a web-based 3D visualization and cluster computing system was developed to facilitate and expedite the resource distribution process during a disaster. Our disaster management system utilizes state-of- The- Art computing cluster with 16 nodes of Intel Xeon-E5 processors (16 cores per node) to process the emergency supply requests from the disaster victims, and calculate the optimal resource distribution routes with the consideration of the damaged transportation infrastructures. The optimized resource distribution problem was solved with distributed all pair shortest path algorithm and the vehicle routing algorithm. The web-based 3D visualization system was developed with Google earth engine to display the disaster areas, affected households and resource distribution routes. The computation result from the cluster was automatically uploaded to the web-based 3D visualization system, enabling the users to immediately see the optimal resource distribution routes in a virtual 3D environment. The visualization system is flexible and can be easily adapted to a Google earth enabled mobile devices, desktop monitors as well as a Cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE). A historical disaster data from the Northwest Indiana was used to demonstrate the functionalities of the developed system. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2013.

We introduce a geodesic based tractography method for High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging (HARDI). The concepts used are similar to the ones in geodesic based tractography for Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). In DTI, the inverse of the second-order diffusion tensor is used to define the manifold where the geodesics are traced. HARDI models have been developed to resolve complex fiber populations within a voxel, and higher order tensors (HOT) are possible representations for HARDI data. In our framework, we apply Finsler geometry, which extends Riemannian geometry to a directionally dependent metric. A Finsler metric is defined in terms of HARDI higher order tensors. Furthermore, the Euler-Lagrange geodesic equations are derived based on the Finsler geometry. In contrast to other geodesic based tractography algorithms, the multi-valued numerical solution of the geodesic equations can be obtained. This gives the possibility to capture all geodesics arriving at a single voxel instead of only computing the shortest one. Results are analyzed to show the potential and characteristics of our algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Eco-routing is a technique proposed to optimize the fuel consumption in transportation networks. User feedback is used to compute the route's fuel consumption level for other vehicles to build their minimum path routes. When a vehicle traverses a road link, it reports its fuel consumption on this link to a Traffic Management Center (TMC), which updates the vehicles routing information and then vehicles are assigned routes based on this updated information. The vehicular network is responsible for transferring this information from vehicles to the TMC, where packets are subjected to delays and drops. To the best of our knowledge, none of the previous research efforts on eco-routing studied the effect of the data network and communication parameters on the performance of eco-routing algorithms. This paper, firstly, introduces a realistic simulation framework for eco-routing that can capture all the details of both the transportation and the communication networks. Secondly, it studies the effect of communication parameters on the eco-routing performance. The results show that the errors due to data packet drops and delay are not significant. Consequently, the algorithm is robust against drops and delay. However, the number and locations of the roadside units (RSUs) are important factors that affect the network-wide fuel consumption level.

Morphology of cardiovascular tissue is influenced by the unsteady behavior of the blood flow and vice versa. Therefore, the pathogenesis of several cardiovascular diseases is directly affected by the blood-flow dynamics. Understanding flow behavior is of vital importance to understand the cardiovascular system and potentially harbors a considerable value for both diagnosis and risk assessment. The analysis of hemodynamic characteristics involves qualitative and quantitative inspection of the blood-flow field. Visualization plays an important role in the qualitative exploration, as well as the definition of relevant quantitative measures and its validation. There are two main approaches to obtain information about the blood flow: simulation by computational fluid dynamics, and in-vivo measurements. Although research on blood flow simulation has been performed for decades, many open problems remain concerning accuracy and patient-specific solutions. Possibilities for real measurement of blood flow have recently increased considerably by new developments inmagnetic resonance imaging which enable the acquisition of 3Dquantitative measurements of blood-flow velocity fields. This chapter presents the visualization challenges for both simulation and real measurements of unsteady blood-flow fields. © Springer-Verlag London 2014.

The success of eLearning depends on the broad availability of educational materials that provide a high-quality delivery of high-quality content. One approach for high-quality delivery is to rely on a computer animated instructor avatar that not only speaks, but that also gestures to elucidate novel concepts and to convey an engaging personality that captures and maintains the learners’ focus. The traditional approach of manual key frame animation does not scale, as it requires a substantial time investment as well as artistic talent. We have developed a system that allows animating an instructor avatar quickly and without the prerequisite of artistic talent through a text script. In this paper we quantify the speed/quality tradeoff made by our scripted animation by comparison to manual animation. © Institute for computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2014.

We present a framework for the conversion of existing 3D unstructured urban models into a compact procedural representation that enables model synthesis, querying, and simplification of large urban areas. During the de-instancing phase, a dissimilarity-based clustering is performed to obtain a set of building components and component types. During the proceduralization phase, the components are arranged into a context-free grammar, which can be directly edited or interactively manipulated. We applied our approach to convert several large city models, with up to 19,000 building components spanning over 180 km squares, into procedural models of a few thousand terminals, non-terminals, and 50-100 rules.

Automatic tuning of liver tissue model using simulated annealing and genetic algorithm heuristic approaches

Mass Spring Model (MSM) is a highly efficient model in terms of calculations and easy implementation. Mass, spring stiffness coefficient and damping constant are three major components of MSM. This paper focuses on identifying the coefficients of spring stiffness and damping constant using automated tuning method by optimization in generating human liver model capable of responding quickly. To achieve the objective two heuristic approaches are used, namely Simulated Annealing (SA) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) on the human liver model data set. The properties of the mechanical heart, which are taken into consideration, are anisotropy and viscoelasticity. Optimization results from SA and GA are then implemented into the MSM to model two human hearts, each with its SA or GA construction parameters. These techniques are implemented while making FEM construction parameters as benchmark. Step size response of both models are obtained after MSMs were solved using Fourth Order Runge-Kutta (RK4) to compare the elasticity response of both models. Remodelled time using manual calculation methods was compared against heuristic optimization methods of SA and GA in showing that model with automatic construction is more realistic in terms of realtime interaction response time. Liver models generated using SA and GA optimization techniques are compared with liver model from manual calculation. It shows that the reconstruction time required for 1000 repetitions of SA and GA is faster than the manual method. Meanwhile comparison between construction time of SA and GA model indicates that model SA is faster than GA with varying rates of time 0.110635 seconds/1000 repetitions. Real-time interaction of mechanical properties is dependent on rate of time and speed of remodelling process. Thus, the SA and GA have proven to be suitable in enhancing realism of simulated real-time interaction in liver remodelling.
