Connectomics is a branch of neuroscience that attempts to create a connectome, i.e., a completemap of the neuronal system and all connections between neuronal structures. This representation can be used to understand how functional brain states emerge from their underlying anatomical structures and how dysfunction and neuronal diseases arise. We review the current state-of-the-art of visualization and image processing techniques in the field of connectomics and describe a number of challenges. After a brief summary of the biological background and an overview of relevant imaging modalities, we review current techniques to extract connectivity information from image data at macro-, meso- and *** also discuss data integration and neural network modeling, as well as the visualization, analysis and comparison of brain networks. © 2014, Springer-Verlag London.

This paper proposes a shot-based key frame selection technique, aiming at generating a condensed set of frames representing the essential content of a video sequence. Inspired by the successful utilization of Jensen-Shannon Divergence (JSD) and Jensen-Renyi Divergence (JRD) for key frame selection [1] [2], we investigate several popularly accepted f-divergences for calculating the frame-by-frame distance to segment the video clip and then to obtain the key frames. Based on simulation and real test videos, the performances of the key frame selection method by using different versions of f-divergences are systematically analyzed. Extensive experimentation shows that, compared with the methods using JSD and JRD, the new technique is slightly better and computationally faster.

The effects of position and size of drywall on the physical demands for installers

The present study utilized an integrated biomechanical modeling approach that was previously developed by the researchers to investigate the effects of position and size of drywall on the physical demands for drywall installers. If the drywall sheets were stored vertically instead of flat, it reduced the required muscle contraction forces and joint reaction forces at the low back and shoulder approximately 8% on average during drywall installation. In particular, the L4/L5 disc compression forces and the absolute values of L4/L5 anterior-posterior shear forces decreased 6.1% and 8.5%, respectively, and at the shoulder during lifting the forces of rotator cuff muscles decreased 9.8%, and the coracohumeral ligament forces decreased 12.8%. The reaction forces at both the GH (glenohumeral) and SC (sternoclavicular) joints were reduced 7.2% and 3.6%, respectively. The larger size (e.g., 4x12 and 4x16) of drywall sheets increased the physical burden for the installers tremendously and could expose them to a higher risk of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. In some simulations the average low back lateral shear forces increased to 1675 N and 2152 N, respectively. These forces are well above the 1000 N recommended for a single lift. These results indicated that it would be physically too difficult or even impossible for one person alone to lift bigger and heavier drywall sheets. Therefore, sound engineering (e.g., lifting tables) and/or administrative (e.g., two-person team work) solutions to handling oversized drywall sheets are strongly recommended.

In today's dynamic business scenario, in order to sustain within the global turmoil, decision plays a pivotal role. Today's market is completely driven with the choice of the consumer or the end user and toprolong this unprecedented uproar an adroit, firm and stable decision has to be taken. To acclimatize with the changing scenario, the situation demands for development of an expert system to expedite the decision making activity. Advent in MCDM (Multi Criteria Decision Making) techniques diffused with high end mathematical sub-layers isserving this purpose for the past decade. Literature survey reveals lack of availability of a robust expert system encompassing a numerous MCDM techniques, normalization techniques and weight determination techniques. Therefore this project is to mitigate this paucity and to develop a decision support expert system branDEC-V:1R:1 [bran is an eponym derived by taking the first letter of the authors name and DEC is short form of“decision”]which can simultaneously harness all the existing offline MCDM methods and which make a decision avoiding time and computational complexity.

This study attempts to apply, compare and analyze the performance of automated target detection algorithms on hyper spectral data with the aim to identify mangroves species in the Sunderban Delta of West Bengal. The performance of algorithms such as Pixel Purity Index (PPI) and NFINDR has been evaluated on the basis of spectral difference between pure pixels extracted from image data and ground measured values. The accuracy of each algorithm in identification of pure mangrove patches has been assessed from the classification results obtained after spectral unmixing of the Hyperion data. Linear Mixing Model (LMM) has been applied on the hyper spectral imagery for calculation of abundance values of each sub-pixel existent within each pixel using the pure spectra derived from the target detection algorithms. It has been observed that NFINDR shows higher accuracy in identification of pure spectra of mangrove species as compared with PPI. The algorithm has been successful in identifying dominant species namely Avicennia Marina, Avicennia Alba, Avicennia Officinallis, Excoecaria Agallocha, Ceriops Decandra, Phoenix Paludosa and Aegialitis. The accuracy assessment of identified endmembers is achieved by calculating the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of image derived data and field measured data.

Poisson disk sampling has been widely used in many applications such as remeshing, procedural texturing, object distribution, illumination, etc. While 2D Poisson disk sampling is intensively studied in recent years, direct Poisson disk sampling on 2-manifold surface is rarely covered. In this paper, we present a novel framework which generates approximate Poisson disk distribution directly on mesh, a discrete representation of 2-manifold surfaces. Our framework is easy to implement and provides extra flexibility to specified sampling issues like feature-preserving sampling and adaptive sampling. We integrate the tensor voting method into feature detection and adaptive sample radius calculation. Remeshing as a special downstream application is also addressed. According to our experiment results, our framework is efficient, robust, and widely applicable.

In this paper we analyzed the performance of Aggressive Packet Combining (APC) scheme. Various researchers have already suggested some protocols or schemes for the improvement of performance and correction capability of APC. Here we proposed four new protocols for improving the correction capability of APC. The four new protocols have been studied numerically and presented in this paper.

Indisputably, search engines (SEs) abound. The monumental growth of users performing online searches on the Web is a contending issue in the contemporary world nowadays. For example, there are tens of billions of searches performed everyday, which typically offer the users many irrelevant results which are time consuming and costly to the user. Based on the afore-going problem it has become a herculean task for existing Web SEs to provide complete, relevant and up-to-date information response to users’ search queries. To overcome this problem, we developed the Distributed Search Engine Architecture (DSEA), which is a new means of smart information query and retrieval of the World Wide Web (WWW). In DSEAs, multiple autonomous search engines, owned by different organizations or individuals, cooperate and act as a single search engine. This paper includes the work reported in this research focusing on development of DSEA, based on topic-specific specialised search engines. In DSEA, the results to specific queries could be provided by any of the participating search engines, for which the user is unaware of. The important design goal of using topic-specific search engines in the research is to build systems that can effectively be used by larger number of users simultaneously. Efficient and effective usage with good response is important, because it involves leveraging the vast amount of searched data from the World Wide Web, by categorising it into condensed focused topic -specific results that meet the user’s queries. This design model and the development of the DSEA adopt a Service Directory (SD) to route queries towards topic-specific document hosting SEs. It displays the most acceptable performance which is consistent with the requirements of the users. The evaluation results of the model return a very high priority score which is associated with each frequency of a keyword.

In this paper, parametric and numerical model of the motors of a robot are extracted. A method is proposed here to control the torque and velocity of the motor simultaneously using the extracted dynamics of the motor and consequently control the robot motion more accurately. Parametric model of the motors are derived by conducting standard tests like locked rotor test and step and sine wave input test. In order to derive the neural network and numerical models, a set of sinusoidal, triangular, and random steps signal, are applied as the input to the motor and its speed is recorded as the output. Neural network model of the motors is extracted by using these dataset and considering the MLP neural network structure with Levenberg _Marquardt training method. Results of the numerical model and parametric models are compared and validated by experimental tests.

In this paper,we present a hybrid method,which integrates PIC/FLIP and vortex particle methods into a unified framework,to efficiently simulate vortex shedding that happens when fluids flow around internal *** improve efficiency and reduce the numerical dissipations,we first solve the governing equations on a coarse grid using PIC/FLIP,and then interpolate the intermediate results to a finer grid to obtain the base *** the regular particles in PIC/FLIP enter the boundary layer,if the specified conditions are satisfied to cause vortex shedding,they are selected as vortex particles by assigning additional vorticity related *** vortex particle dynamics are controlled by the vorticity form of NS equations,and several efficient methods are proposed to solve them on the finer ***,the obtained turbulence flow is added to the base *** a result,we are able to simulate turbulent water with rich wake details around the internal obstacles.
