This paper is synopsis of a recently proposed solution for treating patients who suffer from Phantom Limb Pain (PLP). The underpinning approach of this research and development project is based on an extension of “mirror box” therapy which has had some promising results in pain reduction. An outline of an immersive individually tailored environment giving the patient a virtually realised limb presence, as a means to pain reduction is provided. The virtual 3D holographic environment is meant to produce immersive, engaging and creative environments and tasks to encourage and maintain patients' interest, an important aspect in two of the more challenging populations under consideration (over-60s and war veterans). The system is hoped to reduce PLP by more than 3 points on an 11 point Visual Analog Scale (VAS), when a score less than 3 could be attributed to distraction alone.

Human object extraction from infrared image has broad applications, and has become an active research area in image processing community. Combined with chaos differential evolution (CDE) algorithm and morphological operators, a novel infrared human target extraction method is proposed based on nonextensive fuzzy entropy. Firstly, the image was transformed into a fuzzy domain by fuzzy membership function, and the image nonextensive fuzzy entropy was constructed. Then, the image was segmented by thresholding based on the maximum entropy principle and the pseudoadditivity rule of nonextensive entropy. In order to reduce the search time of optimal threshold selection, the CDE algorithm was presented. Finally, the object was extracted using morphological operators to denoise, fill cavity on the threshold segmented image. Experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient and requires less computation time.

This paper presents a method that takes advantage of powerful graphics hardware to obtain fully affine-invariant image feature detection and matching. The chosen approach is the accurate, but also very computationally expensive, ASIFT algorithm. We have created a CUDA version of this algorithm that is up to 70 times faster than the original implementation, while keeping the algorithm's accuracy close to that of ASIFT. It's matching performance is therefore much better than that of other non-fully affine-invariant algorithms. Also, this approach was adapted to fit the multi-GPU paradigm in order to assess the acceleration potential from modern GPU clusters.

In this paper we describe the design, development, formative evaluation and initial findings of one level of a serious game whose objective is to teach Information Assurance concepts to undergraduate students in introductory programming courses. The game level focuses on the concept of 'operator precedence'. The player travels through a multilevel 3- dimensional maze and at each junction in the maze he/she is required to solve a mathematical problem that involves the application of operator precedence rules. A correct answer allows the player to move closer to the maze exit, an incorrect solution moves the player farther from the end of the maze. Initial findings from a formative study with a group of 14 undergraduate students show that the game level is usable, engaging and useful for learning/reviewing the intended programming concept.

Most of the patter search algorithms in literature are mostly string based and do not concentrate on finding sequential patterns with constraints in a given database. Also in query languages such as SQL or MySQL, the select clause does not allow the use of the non-aggregate functions as part of query compilation. The objective of this work is to propose a pattern mining algorithm which may be embedded into SQL or MySQL Query languages so that we can search for presence of sequential pattern in the database. The algorithm makes use of sliding sequential patterns with three look-ahead elements in the event of any mismatch.

Traditionally, thumb print and iris pattern are used for person identification as biometric features. Use of ear is recent biometric evolution for identification. A system is presented here for person identification using ear features. Digitally captured ear image is processed to extract ear features (Helix rim, Lobule, Triangularfossa, Concha and Tragus) and stored in database for matching process. Matching process uses projection lines to quantify ear features. Matching process gives matched profile as a result of system in graphical format as well as textual format with tolerance limit of ± 15%.

Component based software development has gained a lot of practical importance in the field of software engineering from several researchers and also from industry perspective. Finding components for efficient software reuse is one of the important problems aimed by researchers. Clustering reduces the search space of components by grouping similar entities together thus ensuring reduced time complexity as it reduces the search time for component retrieval. In this research, we instigate a new a generalized approach for clustering a given set of documents or text files or components by defining a new similarity function called hybrid XOR function for the purpose of finding degree of similarity between two document sets or software components. We construct a matrix called similarity matrix of the order n-1 by n for a given set of n documents or components or patterns by applying hybrid XOR function. We define and design the algorithm for component or document clustering which has the input as similarity matrix and output being set of clusters formed dynamically as compared to other clustering algorithms that predefine the count of clusters. The output is a set of highly cohesive pattern groups or documents. The approach can be justified as it carries out very simple computational logic and efficient in terms of processing with reduced search space and can be also be used in general for document clustering or software component clustering.
