CMOS imagers are complex systems whose design requires quite different pieces of expertise, namely: pixels, analog signal processing, pixel readout and analog-to-digital conversion, digital signal processing, output drivers, etc. Confronting the design of new imagers require hence the concourse of multidisciplinary teams. However, because correct operation calls for the close interconnection among the different parts, global knowledge is mandatory for successful design. This is particularly pertinent for the newer generations of smart imagers required for high-end applications and/or requiring ultra-high image capture, on-chip image correction, scene interpretation, high dynamic range capture, etc. All these features demand architectural and circuital innovations and pose significant challenges to designers. Also, the increased interest on sensors capable of capturing 3-D scenes raise new challenges at circuit level related to the necessity to interface pixels different from those employed for 2-D capture, on the one hand, and to extract and convert to digital domain time information, on the other hand. This tutorial addresses the design of smart CMOS imagers by following a comprehensive and complete top-down approach where each subsystem is contemplated and described as a part of a whole. Starting the formulation of the performance metrics used to specify and characterize imagers, the tutorial explains how the subsystem behavior and non-idealities impact on the global imager metrics, thereby setting the basis to specify the subsystems for given global image sensor specs. Such methodology is illustrated in the tutorial via a dedicated, MATLAB-based modeling tool which will be employed to allow the attendees gaining insight on the impact of non-ideal sub-systems behaviors. Simulation of everyday situations from real life can be a very useful tool in entertainment applications and training systems. Such applications, as games or computer animated movies usually need to provide virtual environments populated with virtual autonomous agents. Commonly, the agents need to be able to evolve in their environment, avoiding collision with each other and obstacles, besides interacting with other characters in order to provide realistic simulations. We present a model to simulate coherent group behaviors based on procedural modeling and semantic environments. Our main focus is virtual environments and agents, present in the background of games or movies generated with few/without user intervention. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The generation of “virtual twins” of patients (Avatars) through integration of multiscale data gained from both the clinical profile of the patient and - omics tools, could create an appropriate environment for stratification of patients in fitting cohorts of “virtual populations”. Physiologically based pharmacokinetic & pharmacodynamic (PB/PK/PD) models as in silico clinical trial tools can estimate the PK/PD profiles in specific populations. In this work we discuss examples of how patient Avatars could be exploited in the context of in silico clinical trials and help in identifying novel biomarkers for personalized diagnosis. The PB/PK/PD models, neuroimaging and - omics data, may be fused together to further advance current decision making processes in clinical practice.

Failure bitmaps of manufactured memory arrays may contain the information associated to some systematic defects and have hence been used to monitor the process and improve the memory yield. It is very important to develop a method to extract and classify the fault signatures in the failure bitmaps. The fault signatures can be classified into two categories: local fault signatures and global fault signatures. Focusing on the local fault signatures, this paper introduces a supervised one-layer ANN method to solve the signature classification problem. The method is efficient for recognizing the local fault signatures in the failure bitmaps, and more importantly, it has the ability to find new signatures unseen before. © 2012 IEEE.

Routing is a fundamental networking function in every communication system including wireless Ad hoc networks. Operation of the entire network can be affected by attacking the service .Such attacks can be performed easily in wireless networks due to the unsupervised access to the wireless medium. The malicious manipulation of routing messages results in the dissemination of incorrect routing information leading to network malfunction. Attacks on ad hoc network routing protocols disrupt network performance and reliability. In addition intermediate nodes can be corrupted and thus exhibit arbitrary behavior. The novel algorithm that detects internal attacks by using both message and route redundancy during route discovery. Route discovery messages are protected by pair wise secret keys between a source and destination .The routes are established by public key cryptographic mechanisms. We propose and analyze the performance of secure implementation of the existing routing protocols like Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Adhoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV).

A GIS-based decision support system was proposed and implemented in this study for management of hazardous chemical spill accident (DSS-HCS). It could forecast the dynamics of the pollution on the coast and warn the regions with high risk of being polluted in the early stage of the accident. Afterword, it could assist the assessment of the ecologic damages. The development of such a tool integrated various computer and computational techniques including Net programming, GIS, web, database, numerical modeling and etc. Linking with GIS, a desktop-based decision support tool was developed to provide the user interactive environment for simulating the pollutants transport, hazards mapping, and ecologic damage assessment. A web-based data portal was also implemented to publish the results of forecasting and monitoring. A study case in Hangzhou Bay, China was selected to demonstrate the applicability of the developed DSS-HCS. The study results showed that the proposed DSS-HCS could not only assist the decision making in response to the accident with awareness of the risk, but also offer technical supports for ecologic damage assessment and compensation claim. Through integration of the forecasting, monitoring and assessment of marine pollution into a GIS environment, various types of results (e.g. hazardous maps, reports, queries and etc) could be obtained and thus the efficiency of the management process were improved.

The present work evaluates four medical image retrieval approaches based on features derived from image miniatures. We argue that due to the restricted domain of medical image data, the standardized acquisition protocols and the absence of a potentially cluttered background a holistic image description is sufficient to capture high-level image similarities. We compare four different miniature 2D and 3D descriptors and corresponding metrics, in terms of their retrieval performance: (A) plain miniatures together with euclidean distances in a k Nearest Neighbor based retrieval backed by kD-trees;(B) correlations of rigidly aligned miniatures, initialized using the kD-tree;(C) distribution fields together with the l1-norm;(D) SIFT-like histogram of gradients using the χ2-distance. We evaluate the approaches on two data sets: the ImageClef 2009 benchmark of 2D radiographs with the aim to categorize the images and a large set of 3D-CTs representing a realistic sample in a hospital PACS with the objective to estimate the location of the query volume. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The research on facial animation has grown very fast and become more realistic in term of 3D facial data since the laser scan and advance 3D tools can support creating complex facial model. However, that approaches still lacking in term of facial expression based on emotional condition. Facial skin color is one parameter that is contributing on augmenting the realism of facial expression, because it's closely related to the emotion which happens inside the human. This paper provides a new technique for facial animation to change the colour of facial skin based on linear interpolation. © 2012 ACM.

3D Object Retrieval is an important field of research with many application possibilities. One of the main goals in this research is the development of discriminative methods for similarity search. The descriptor-based approach to date has seen a lot of research attention, with many different extraction algorithms proposed. In previous work, we have introduced a simple but effective scheme for 3D model retrieval based on a spatially fixed combination of 3D object fragment descriptors. In this work, we propose a novel flexible combination scheme based on finding the best matching fragment descriptors to use in the combination. By an exhaustive experimental evaluation on established benchmark data we show the capability of the new combination scheme to provide improved retrieval effectiveness. The method is proposed as a versatile and inexpensive method to enhance the effectiveness of a given global 3D descriptor approach. © 2012 ACM.
