Iterative learning control (ILC) applies to situations when a system performs a tracking maneuver repeatedly. The error in each run is used to adjust the command in the next run, aiming to converge to zero error. Spacecraft applications include making fine pointing equipment follow a precise scan pattern in spite of flexibility effects. Very effective and general ILC design methods have been developed for linear systems. This paper shows how internal numerical differentiation can be used to very easily obtain the needed model information from the nonlinear system differential equations so that these ILC laws can be applied in the neighborhood of the desired nonlinear system output. This allows one to transfer from the linear context to the nonlinear context, the methods that have been developed to keep the control input history well behaved, methods to robustify to model parameter uncertainty, and to robustify to parasitic poles or residual modes.

During 1976–1977 academic years he taught as assistant professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering University of Iowa. Then Dr. Bien joined Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology summer 1977 and is now Professor of Control Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science KAIST. Dr. Bien was the president of the Korea Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Society during 1990–1995 and also the general chair of IFSA World Congress 1993 and for FUZZ-IEEE99 respectively. He is currently co-Editor-in-Chief for International Journal of Fuzzy Systems (IJFS) Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and a regional editor for the International Journal of Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing. He has been serving as Vice President for IFSA since 1997 and is now Chief Chairman of Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea and Director of Humanfriendly Welfare Robot System Research Center. His current research interests include intelligent control methods with emphasis on fuzzy logic systems service robotics and rehabilitation engineering and large-scale industrial control systems. Kwang-Hyun Park:received the B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from KAIST Korea in 1994 19997 and 2001 respectively. He is now a researcher at Human-friendly Welfare Robot System Research Center. His research interests include learning control machine learning human-friendly interfaces and service robotics.

It has been found that some huge overshoot in the sense of sup-norm may be observed when typical iterative learning control (ILC) algorithms are applied to LTI systems, even though monotone convergence in the sense of λ-norm is guaranteed. In this paper, a new ILC algorithm with adjustment of learning interval is proposed to resolve such an undesirable phenomenon, and it is shown that the output error can be monotonically converged to zero in the sense of sup-norm when the proposed ILC algorithm is applied. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

NONLINEAR NETWORK STRUCTURES FOR FEEDBACK CONTROL

He obtained the Bachelor's Degree in Physics/Electrical Engineering and the Master's of Electrical Engineering Degree at Rice University in 1971. He spent six years in the U.S. navy serving as Navigator aboard the frigate USS Trippe (FF-1075) and Executive Officer and Acting Commanding Officer aboard USS Salinan (ATF-161). In 1977 he received the Master's of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of West Florida. In 1981 he obtained the Ph.D. degree at The Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta where he was employed as a professor from 1981 to 1990 and is currently an Adjunct Professor. He is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington where he was awarded the Moncrief-O'Donnell Endowed Chair in 1990 at the Automation and Robotics Research Institute. Dr. Lewis has studied the geometric analytic and structural properties of dynamical systems and feedback control automation. His current interests include robotics intelligent control neural and fuzzy systes nonlinear systems and manufacturing process control. He is the author/co-author of 2 U.S. patents 124 journal papers 20 chapters and encyclopedia articles 210 refereed conference papers seven books: Optimal Control Optimal Estimation Applied Optimal Control and Estimation Aircraft Control and Simulation Control of Robot Manipulators Neural Network Control High-Level Feedback Control with Neural Networks and the IEEE reprint volume Robot Control. Dr. Lewis is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and was selected to the Editorial Boards of International Journal of Control Neural Computing and Applications and Int. J. A framework is given for controller design using Nonlinear Network Structures, which include both neural networks and fuzzy logic systems. These structures possess a universal approximation property that allows them to be used in feedback control of unknown systems without requirements for linearity in the system parameters or finding a regression matrix. Nonlinear nets can be linear or nonlinear in the tunable weight parameters. In the latter case weight tuning algorithms are not straightforward to obtain. Feedback control topologies and weight tuning algorithms are given here that guarantee closed-loop stability and bounded weights. Extensions are discussed to force control, backstepping control, and output feedback control, where dynamic nonlinear nets are required.

The emerging concept of hybrid networks and the 4th Network Generation raise several issues of network interconnection and Quality of Service. As this next generation networks consider different types of access technologies, such as GSM, Wi-Max or DVB, some very important aspects must be explored in make possible to deliver services through these networks with end-to-end QoS. A particular aspect of convergent environment is the massive presence of mobile terminals as the main equipments for accessing services. This work aims to present some discussion about Quality of Service in a heterogeneous network (or convergent environment), taking into consideration the concepts of QoS Broker and Vertical Handover in order to introduce a framework for convergent environments with mobile terminals.

The MDA (Model Driven Architecture) is an approach for software development that has the ability to produce applications for virtually every middleware platform from the same base model. All the MDA development projects start with the creation of a Platform Independent Model (PIM), which expresses only business functionality and behavior, abstracting away platform-specific details. This paper focuses on defin ing recommendations to help reducing the necessary effort to represent the PIM model, by the adoption of predefined solutions for the software to be generated. The paper also presents a taxonomy for these predefined solutions and the consequences of their use, pertaining to modeling effort.

This article demonstrates results and experiences gained in the area of multilayer internetworking, with emphasis on bandwidth on-demand provisioning as well as resource and restoration management. Behavioral characteristics and numerical results were obtained from a management system prototype implemented and tested in an appropriately adapted commercial WDM environment enhanced with multivendor gigabit IP routers. The management solution, the testbed environment, and a representative evaluation scenario are presented as a means of explaining in detail the results that finally allow a global system assessment.

Channel evolution refers to boundary changes of rivers affected by fluvial actions. This paper provides an analysis of the development and formation of stream patterns in the lower Yellow River and presents intensive studies of several critical problems relating to channel evolution, including thresholds of channel gradient and longitudinal profile adjustment, channel surface morphology, response of channel pattern to boundary conditions, critical discrimination of cross sections and the discrimination of channel pattern changes using hydrologic parameters.

Most educators are familiar with copyright and fair use practices. However, there are new considerations for copyright and fair use on the web. Copyright includes seven different categories, many of which are applicable to presentations and papers on the web. The seven categories are: 1) literary works; 2) musical works, including words; 3) dramatic works, including music; 4) pantomimes and choreographic works; 5) pictorial, graphic and sculptural works; 6) motion pictures and audiovisual works; and 7) sound recordings. Educators need to become aware of the implications of using any of these seven categories on the web. Other issues pertaining to law are patents, trademarks and trade *** educators need to become aware of the new laws pertaining to copyright. The 1996 Telecommunications Act and the 1998 Digital Millenium Act are important for their implications for copyright. The newest TEACH act has implications for on-line and web courses. Some of the newest information concerning both of these acts shows that there may be some contradiction between the two. In addition, computing educators need to be aware of laws pertaining to access, privacy and accessibility when providing course material on the web. These issues are extremely important for not only copyright issues, but also for personal privacy issues. How the emerging technologies affect how we teach and what we are doing with our materials is important for all educators to *** workshop will examine the various copyright, law and ethical considerations, particularly as they pertain to the internet. Particular examples will be given using classroom scenarios. On-line documents, labs and other materials will be examined for use on the web pertaining to law, ethics and copyright issues. Autonomous decentralised systems must be dependable or they will be unhelpful, at best, and may cause serious harm. Despite major advances in theoretical computer science and software engineering, industrial practice has not kept pace and most software intensive system development projects fail. If we are to achieve the benefits promised by new system architectures, industry will have to adopt much more rigorous software engineering practices, and universities will have to extend the amount of software engineering they teach, and to use such methods routinely on their own projects.
