Phase field modeling of fracture in nonlinearly elastic solids via energy decomposition

Phase-field models for fracture problems have attracted considerable attention in recent years, which are capable of tracking the discontinuities numerically, and also produce complex crack patterns in many applications. In this paper, a phase-field model for a general nonlinearly elastic material is proposed using a novel additive decomposition of strain energy. This decomposition has two parts: one is principal stretch related and the other solely composed of volumetric deformation, which accounts for different behaviors of fracture in tension and compression. We construct the Lagrangian by integrating the split energies and the separation energy from phase-field approximation for discrete cracks. A coupled system of equations is also derived that governs the deformation of the body and the evolution of phase field. The capability and performance of the proposed model are demonstrated in several representative examples. Our results show that the predicted fracture surfaces are in good agreement with experimental observations. Compared with the previous models in which the energy is simply split into the isochoric and volumetric parts, the present model is numerically more robust and effective in simulating sharp cracks. The present model can also aid researchers to control the degree of tension–compression asymmetry in the nonlinear regime of deformation, which can be naturally extended to simulate the fracture of the rubber-like materials with tension–compression asymmetry.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

Blended learning can be considered an approach that combines face-to-face and online periods in education through the integration of some technological resources, such as media centers. The present research sought to investigate the panorama of scientific production on blended learning and identify evidence of how media centers are used to support this type of teaching. This is a bibliometric study carried out based on the principles of the Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Although the results indicate an increase in production, a high rate of authors with only one published work was identified, which can be interpreted as an expanding topic. The United States stood out as the country that contributed the most with research and the areas of Computer Science and Education among the fields of research with the highest number of articles. © 2024 The Author(s)

A symmetric seven–stages multistep perfect in phase family of pairs is introduced in this paper. The basis for the development of the specific embedded pair is the disappearance of the phase–lag and its derivatives of order which is the maximum possible. We note that on this newly introduced family the phase–lag is considered on the whole multistage *** analyze the newly introduced family of methods by (a) studying the phase–lag and its derivatives, (b) investigating the the local truncation error (LTE) of the family and (c) considering the conditions for non empty interval of periodicity and the conditions for maximum stability *** test the effectiveness of the newly introduced family of pairs by applying it to several periodic initial and/or boundary-value problems.

Student profile describes the best way a student prefers to learn. It includes information on student’s characteristics such as background knowledge, learning preference, styles, interest, goals etc. The major challenge that the students face in learning system is that they are unable to retrieve relevant information based on their requirements. One of the methods used to obtain the requirement of the students is to construct an efficient student profile which would reflect the true student needs. The proposed work is to develop an intelligent ontology-based dynamic student profile that provides semantic retrieval using fuzzy concepts. The approach starts with the collection of both static and dynamic data of students. The dynamic dataof students particularly student interest and learning style are obtained by weblog analysis using algorithms such as semantic based representation using WordNet and decision tree classifier algorithm based on Felder-Silverman learning style model (FSLSM). The retrieved data is then used to construct student profile using ontology in which automatic student profile updating is obtained using ontology -based semantic similarity algorithm using WordNet. Finally, semantic retrieval of student information from ontology is achieved by integrating fuzzy concepts using fuzzy linguistic variable and ‘fuzzy IF THEN’ rules. Fuzzy linguistic variable is used to make precise representation on the existing ontology concepts which facilitate more specific classification and semantic retrieval of information. The predictive model of student profile is designed with the implementation of ‘fuzzy IF THEN’ rules using forward chaining reasoning process in the existing ontology model. The inference engine predicts the preference of a new student based on the reasoning process done for specific conditions particularly on student interest and learning style. The web has significantly affected all parts of every one of our students. As our students depend increasingly on the web, the constancy of web applications has turned out to be progressively critical. To make these applications more tried and true, we will make a web application with respect to placement training. In general we have Indiabix and placement season are providing a wide range of both technical and aptitude questions in order to prepare a student for the placement. But somehow those questions are repeatedly asked are the standard questions are given. To improve this situation, in this paper, we propose a model of a web application. This structure utilizes the offline application capacity with all the questions are put away in the database and the questions will be refreshed progressively on a period premise with the assistance of the placement coordinator in the college. Every student can sign up and practice all the questions that are provided with respect to the subjects.

A science department on the campus of the University of Illinois has received numerous national awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The secret to their success? For nearly two decades, they have collaboratively used evidence-based instructional practices (EBIP) in their introductory level courses. Despite these successes and efforts to spread their EBIP, no other departments followed this department's lead. Then, suddenly six years ago, many instructors from other departments began adopting EBIP in their classrooms. This article asks what was the catalyst for this change? Why had previous attempts at institutional change failed? The authors answer these questions by analyzing their efforts to transform the teaching practices in large-enrollment science and engineering introductory courses on their campus.

Interoperability is commonly referred as a software quality sub-characteristic. Some proposals for formalizing interoperability include sets of concepts linked to this phenomenon. Such concepts differ among the proposals, resulting in a different terminology for referring to the same thing. Non-unified terminology of interoperability concepts exhibits three main problems: homonymy, synonymy and missing concepts. Due to such problems, crucial aspects of the interoperability process could be either misunderstood or just omitted, resulting in an ambiguous and incomplete description of interoperability. To solve these problems, we propose a terminology unification of interoperability concepts. This unification is based on published studies about the interoperability formalization. Results lead us to recognize six main concepts useful to unify the interoperability vocabulary.
