Cooking as Pedagogy: Engaging the Senses through Experiential Learning

Research faculty member in nutrition and food science at the University of Vermont who focuses on cooking as a strategy to teach about sustainability. She also studies the cuisine of Mexico particularly in Oaxaca and is the director of Vtrim the University of Vermont's evidenced-based behavior weight loss management program for the public. Belliveau and Trubek thank David Sutton for his comments on earlier drafts of this essay.

EFFECTIVENESS OF DRUG TREATMENT COURTS: EVIDENCE FROM A RANDOMIZED TRIAL*

作者： DENISE C. GOTTFREDSON STACY S. NAJAKA BROOK KEARLEY Denise C. Gottfredson is a Professor at the University of Maryland Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. She received a Ph.D. in Social Relations from The Johns Hopkins University. Gottfredson's research interests include delinquency and delinquency prevention and particularly the effects of school environments on youth behavior. She currently directs evaluations of Baltimore City's Drug Treatment Court and Maryland After School Opportunity Grant Fund Program both of which address important policy questions for the state of Maryland. She is Co-PI on an evaluation of the Strengthening Washington D.C. Families Program and directs a grant to work with the prevention community in the State of Maryland to increase the use of research-based prevention practices Stacy S. Najaka is a Research Associate at the University of Maryland Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. Her research interests include crime and delinquency prevention program evaluation and research methods. Currently she is managing a follow-up study of the Baltimore City Drug Treatment Court as well as a meta-analytic study of prevention programs and activities throughout the state of Maryland. Recent publications include a meta-analysis of the literature on school-based prevention to assess the relationship between selected risk factors and problem behavior (Prevention Science 2001) Brook Kearley is a graduate student in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. She currently works on a follow up study of the Baltimore City Drug Treatment Court. Kearley's primary research interests include drug policy and treatment program evaluation and research methods. She has recently co-authored papers in the areas of follow-up difficulty validity of self-reported drug use and criminal history and the relationship between client services and client outcomes

Research Summary: Study randomly assigned 235 offenders to drug treatment court (DTC) or “treatment as usual.” Analyses of official records collected over a two-year follow-up period show that DTC is reducing crime in a population of drug-addicted offenders. DTC subjects who participated in treatment were significantly less likely to recidivate than were both untreated drug court subjects and control subjects. Policy Implications: Continued enthusiasm for DTCs is warranted. Both sanctions and treatment are important elements of the DTC model. However, DTCs will not necessarily result in cost reductions because DTC and control cases are incarcerated for approximately equal numbers of days. Implementation fidelity is important, and DTCs can be strengthened if they engage a higher percentage of their clients in drug treatment.

As a teacher of biomedical ethics, I have constantly sought a method to motivate my students to engage in meaningful moral debate on the controversial issues of abortion and euthanasia, without risking a shouting match (as happened on one occasion). The moral views are so personalized and polarized that silence often displaces discourse. Ronald Dworkin's masterful Life's Dominion offers an innovative and insightful way through this impasse by identifying moral commitments shared by persons with different conclusions. His argument begins with "conservative" premises and winds up with "liberal" conclusions. It is a philosophical and constitutional analysis of the meaning of life and death that draws on substantive religious values. In so doing, Dworkin suggests an approach that could alter the adversarial and even violent nature of our cultural debate about the ending of life towards a more dialogic and tolerant, but not indifferent, mode....

Many were led to believe that this period of history was relatively free of problems, but declassified documents show that there was a great amount of tension during this period. A PROPOSAL TO USE CHLORINE-36 FOR MONITORING THE MOVEMENT OF RADIONUCLIDES FROM NUCLEAR-EXPLOSIONS

作者： PHILLIPS, FM DAVIS, SN KUBIK, P Fred Phillips is associate professor of Hydrology at New Mexico Tech in Socorro (Geoscience Department New Mexico Tech Socorro NM 87801). He obtained bachelor's degrees in earth science and history from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1976 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in hydrology from the University of Arizona in 1979 and 1981. He has performed research on radiometric dating of ground water application of stable isotopes to Quaternary paleohydrology surface exposure dating using the accumulation of cosmogenic radionuclides and geological controls on solute transport in ground water. In 1988 he was awarded the Clarke Medal by the Geochemical Society in recognition of his work in developing hydrogeologic applications of36C1. Peter W. Kubik (Nuclear Structure Research Laboratory University of Rochester Rochester NY 14627) received his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Munich. He has been with the Nuclear Structure Research Laboratory since 1985 and is now in charge of its accelerator mass spectrometry program.

Chlorine-36 has been produced in large amounts by hundreds of nuclear explosions on the Nevada Test Site as well as 12 off-site explosions at eight locations in five states. Continued monitoring of the redistribution of radionuclides by subsurface water is of concern in most of the areas affected by the detonations. Chlorine-36 has the following advantages as a built-in tracer for this redistribution: its mobility is equal to or greater than water, its long half-life assures its continued usefulness over long periods, collection and storage of samples is simple, it is not subject to vapor transport at ordinary temperatures, its natural background is very low, and it does not form insoluble precipitates. Chlorine-36 from the Gnome event near Carlsbad, New Mexico, illustrates how 36 C1 can be used to help study the redistribution of radionuclides in the soil profile. Chlorine-36 is also potentially useful as a tracer to study movement of contaminants around large nuclear reactor complexes and near respositories for radioactive waste.
