This study aims to identify the onset and progression of muscle fatigue during gripping exercises using surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. This research differs from previous studies in that it considers static and dynamic conditions, analyzing signals from three forearm muscles across a range of force levels. A novel approach combines dynamic and static data to comprehensively view muscle behavior. Muscle fatigue was assessed through feature extraction, including zero crossings (ZC), mean frequency (MNF), root mean square (RMS), and median frequency (MDF), with the MDF/RMS ratio introduced as a sensitive indicator of fatigue, especially at higher loads. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of sEMG in monitoring fatigue and optimizing muscle performance, providing insights that inform the development of more effective training and rehabilitation strategies. © 2024 IEEE.

Carbon is a well-known material for its properties, versatility, availability, and wide range of applications. Screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) have several attractive properties like mass production, price effectiveness, and technical properties. However, SPCEs performance usually needs to be enhanced with several approaches, such as modifying with nanocomposite materials, electrochemical activation, or doping. In this work, an investigation focused on the effect of 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic-acid (MES) - electrochemical activation of SPCEs was conducted. Electrochemical methods, i.e., cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy, were utilized as characterization techniques. This study utilizes the concept of charge transfer resistance Ret and its drop as a measure to assess the enhancement in conductivity. The results show a significant enhancement in charge transfer resistance (Rct). For graphite electrodes, Ret was reduced by 52% after pretreatment. Meanwhile, the Rct dropped by 54% for the carbon nanotube-modified graphite electrodes. © 2022 IEEE.

Electromagnetic energy harvesting (EMEH) is an interesting way of extracting energy from vibrational sources, providing a viable power source for autonomous wireless sensor systems. Their implementation involves the elaboration of energy management circuits, which are specifically designed to enhance the voltage generated by the EMEH converter, bringing it to a level that meets the requirements for an efficient level of energy storage elements. In this paper, an EMEH converter with a dual-coil for different configurations as well as a study of phase-shifts from 0° to 180°, and input voltages between different harvesters output for parallel and series configurations using single and two rectifiers are presented. The output voltage for series configuration is higher than using single rectifier is higher than the parallel configuration until phase shift of 100 ∘ . For different input voltages the single rectifier is higher than the two rectifiers for series configuration. The simulation and experimental investigation of series configuration show that the error between them is 4.4 %, and 9.6 % for single rectifier, and two rectifers, respectively.

When using a set of data collected under real conditions for machine learning applications, it is very important to consider all the circumstances that may affect the quality of the acquired signals. The influence of fasting, caffeine, and large meal consumption on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals collected from healthy subjects is investigated in this paper. Four Myoware sensors are used to collect sEMG signals from a healthy male subject while performing four groups of hand rehabilitation exercises. In this paper, three classification algorithms specified as k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are tested and compared. The hand gesture classification comparison results prove that the SVM approach achieves the best classification accuracy equal to 91.66% while using the signals collected when the subject is fasting.

Agile production lines call for an effective and intuitive way of programming robots. However, traditional approaches rely on providing low-level instructions using either a script-based language or a graphical user interface to export low-level instructions. This, however, can be tedious for assembly tasks. In this work, we present an approach that generates low-level robot control commands from highly abstract communicative hand gestures. In contrast to other works, we use several abstraction layers to generate such commands with as little user input as possible. For this, we use a body-attached multi-sensor setup consisting of a pressure band, a smart glove, EMG and IMU units. Their combined signals define a multi-dimensional vector per time step. We use a Recurrent Neural Network to infer the gesture class from the pre-processed data stream. From these user inputs we generate a set of symbolic spatial relations describing the assembly process. This formal description is then used to select and execute robot skills such as grasping. Hence, we reduce the ambiguity of abstract instructions in several steps and allow for effective gesture-based robot programming. In our work we give insights in defining and detecting such gestures. In addition, we illustrate the functionality of the whole system at real-world examples.

Helicobacter Pylori Bacteria is very widely spread pathogenic bacteria that can be very dangerous bacteria that attacks human gastrointestinal tract. Electrochemical methods in combination with immunosensing (antibody-antigen interaction) is promising to provide unique solutions for biosensing. Thus, electrochemical detection of bacteria is getting more attention. Therefore, this contribution summarizes recent advances in electrochemical immune-detection of Helicobacter Pylori without the need for polymerase chain reaction amplification step. In addition, it discusses the challenges of detection of the bacteria in complex samples. Finally, it discusses the future perspective regarding Helicobacter pylori immunosensing.

Endocrine Disturbing Chemicals (EDC's) are rising class of environmental pollutants that disturb the human body functions. One of the main EDC's is the estrogen and estrogen-like chemicals especially the 178-estradiol (E2). Elevated levels of E2 may develop severe effects on humans and the wild life even in Pico molar level. Therefore, there is an increased demand to sensitively, precisely and affordably detect E2 in an easy and compatible with Point-Of-Care (POC) devices. In this work, sensitive electrochemical immunosensor was developed in pg/ml range with LOD = 1 pg/mL. The screen-printed working electrode surface of the electrochemical sensor was modified with carboxylated Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to amplify the electrical signal by simple drop casting in layer by layer manner. The anti-17β-estradiol antibody, supplied as ascites fluid, dilution was optimized to achieve higher sensitivity using covalent immobilization with the carboxyl group of the MWCNTs. The electrochemical characterization of the sensor has revealed that the sensor is able to linearly detect 17β-E2 in the pg/ml range from 1 - 1000 pg/mL. The prepared sensor is simply fabricated, has low cost, sensitive and compatible with point-of-care devices.

Dimethoate (DMT) is an organophosphate pesticide (OP), which is widely used against insects and mites and their control in agriculture. As other OPs, DMT is also an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, which is responsible for the disabling of cholinesterase required for the functioning of the central nervous system. This pesticide can invade living cells of the human body through contact or ingestion. We report an electrochemical sensor based on a layer by layer deposition of PDAC/GO on silver electrodes. The sensor fabrication, physical characterization i.e. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy of PDAC/GO based films, and its electrochemical characterization are discussed. The detection of DMT by analyzing electrochemical measurements including cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy shows that functionalization using layer by layer deposition improves electrochemical response and presents a basis for detection of DMT. The highest response is observed in the case of only one PDAC/GO layer which is attributed to the properly balanced interaction between DMT and PDAC/GO layer, and the increase of electrical resistivity of the PDAC/GO layer with its thickness.

This contribution presents a flexible, thin shoe insole of less than 1 mm thickness, which can be used to monitor pressure at a human foot. On this insole, six single sensors based on a multi-walled carbon nanotube-polydimethylsiloxane composite are placed on distinct positions to measure the pressure at the forefoot, midfoot, hallux and heel. Within this work the fabrication of the composite as well as the functionalized insole and the data acquisition under pressure is shown. With such an insole foot ulceration can be prevented or gait analysis can be carried out by pressure monitoring.
