This article shares our experience designing and deploying writing assessment in English Composition I: Achieving Expertise, the first-ever first-year writing Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). We argue that writing assessment can be effectively adapted to the MOOC environment, and that doing so reaffirms the importance of mixed-methods approaches to writing assessment and drives writing assessment toward a more individualized, learner-driven, and learner autonomous paradigm.

This work is an effort to evaluate the student awareness, knowledge, and interest concerning recent technological advancements, and also to foster interest toward the emerging technologies in the field related to their conventional courses. Senior level undergraduate students who are taking the Semiconductor Devices course participated in the study. We introduce one of the recent advancements in the semiconductor device field, “Intel 45 nm transistor and high-k dielectric,” through a brief one-lecture Knowledge Module (KM). Our knowledge module consists of a lecture, pre- and post-module assessments and evaluations containing a technical questionnaire and feedback surveys to measure knowledge acquisition and effectiveness of the module. The outcomes indicate a significant increase of interest about the technology and positive feedback on the module. Our future effort would measure retention, sample diversity and quantification for increased interest through statistical analysis.
This work is an effort to introduce short knowledge modules targeting new application or emerging devices in conventional "core" courses. In this knowledge module, we report introduction of two emerging devi...

Frontline youth workers' ability to form strong, positive relationships with program youth is a key element in maximizing the benefits of program participation. A recent National Collaboration of Youth (2006) report identified six elements associated with youth workers' competency to complete their professional roles: compensation, training opportunities, supportive work environment, clear work roles, sense that work is valued, and networking opportunities. The current study investigated whether having these elements predicted 459 youth workers' self-reported job competency in forming positive relationships with youth. Regression analyses revealed that job efficacy, clarity of work roles, and benefits significantly predicted competency in forming strong relationships with program youth. Findings are discussed in relation to practice implications for the youth work field.
