The WATeRS Network (WATer and environmental Research Systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATeRS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATeRS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the education Plan of WATeRS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATeRS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATeRS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. In the treasure hunting process, the hunters could only get few hints with simple words, therefore they must think over with the experience they learned before. The goal of this paper is to propose a treasure hunting learning model and implement a system based on the model. Within the treasure hunting learning model students will become a treasure hunter when they are learning in the field. The learning model makes learning more fun by asking students some questions according to their learning records and physical position. In order to make the system portable and treasure hunting liked, we implement the treasure hunting learning model with the most simple and common cellphone, that is the text-mode cellphone. To verify the learning model is working, a traditional history and culture course in college was taken as the experiment. © 2006 Ieee.

This paper designs a personalized navigation service based on the student cognitive levels. The personalized navigation service takes the interpretive structural modeling to generate concept navigation matrix by using the student cognitive background matrix (retrieved from tests and questionnaire) and the concept relation matrix (retrieved from textbooks). According to the knowledge structure and the concept navigation matrix, the service can provide different students their own knowledge navigation maps. © 2006 Ieee.

This paper designs a learning notification express delivery service for providing students information about their learning status, their next learning activities, and even reminder notes. The learning notification express delivery service uses Petri-net for modeling learning activities. In order to make students knowing what status they are and what activities they need to do during the learning process, a learning planner is also developed to make teachers feel more comfortable in planning their teaching schedule. © 2006 Ieee.

The neural networks are successfully applied to many applications in different domains. However, due to the results made by the neural networks are difficult to explain the decision process of neural networks is supposed as a black box. The explanation of reasoning is important to some applications such like credit approval application and medical diagnosing software. Therefore, the rule extraction algorithm is becoming more and more important in explaining the extracted rules from the neural networks. In this paper, a decompositional algorithm is analyzed and designed to extract rules from neural networks. The algorithm is simple but efficient;can reduce the extracted rules but improve the efficiency of the algorithm at the same time. Moreover, the algorithm is compared to the other two algorithms, M-of-N and Garcez, by solving the MONK's problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Teachers always want to know how much their students had learned in classes. The most convenient way to discover learning status is `test'. each item on a test sheet always contains one or more concepts used to check whether a student really understands or not. Teachers can also find a student's misconceptions out via the concept relations stored in a test sheet. In order to make the diagnosis process simple, teachers always take concept maps as their test development and learning diagnosis tools. This paper implements a SCORM/IMS compliance online test and diagnosis system base on concept maps. In the system, it has more than 5000 members and generates real-time learning report for misconception diagnosis over 500 times monthly. The members are the third-year student at junior high school and come from different counties and cities all over the country. Currently, the system covers 11 courses such as Chinese, english, Physics, History, and earth science. It's obviously the system is useful for both teachers and students

Students in the web-based e-learning environment might have their own learning paths due to the structure of the world-wide web. Students can choose suitable learning materials according to their different learning style. There are many researches about learning diagnosis in distance education and the main objective of these researches is to improve the learning effects of students. This research proposes a diagnosis mechanism based on the Knowledge Map and implements a feedback system in order to provide the remedy teaching materials in sequence.

Many teachers and researchers put their teaching materials on the Internet for students to read in recent years. This sort of teaching materials could be seen as static because students can only follow the learning sequence made by teachers in advance. The goal of this paper is trying to develop a tool, K-Navi toolbar, to parse and rebuild teaching materials' hypermedia structures according to the concept relations and extracted rules automatically. K-Navi toolbar first uses the formal concept analysis (FCA) to parse the whole set of teaching materials and gets the embedded concept relations between each of two instructional documents; then uses the association rule methodology (ARM) to extract the rules from the concept lattices; and, finally rebuilds the hypermedia structure of the instructional document read by the student automatically. K-Navi toolbar adds related concept hyperlinks (or says links to other knowledge pieces) into the specific position on the instructional hypermedia document automatically when a student asks the document resource. A student then will be able to dig related knowledge pieces via these relevant hyperlinks.

There are many different terms when learner surf on web. When learner is reading an instructional material, he/she may not understand the meaning of specific term/keyword in a moment easily. At this time, the learner will need to find out the definitions or references about the keyword. However, unfortunately, the learner will not be able to find out what he/ she is looking for in the most of time. It is because of the instruction designers of the learning materials who had never thought that would be a problem for learners. Therefore, it will be excellent, if the associated documents with the keyword which is the learner looking for could be retrieved automatically, and furthermore, the original document structure could be reconstructed to a more suitable for learning and reading in real-time. In this paper, the graph theorem and the data mining technique are applying to produce an association lattice of keywords and design a searching algorithm of reconstructing the necessary instructional materials on the website automatically.

One-on-one educational computing refers to I student I computing device, which means every student in a group uses a digital learning device. In this paper, we present a model of student question generation called AGQ, which stands for "asking a good question," supported by one-on-one educational computing in the classroom settings. AGQ is designed for engaging students in a challenging learning activity that potentially involves higher-level cognitive processing operations. We shall describe the general design of AGQ, called Product evolution, and that the current version is a variation of it.
