Mud volcanoes are dynamic geological features releasing methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrocarbons, harboring diverse methane and hydrocarbon-degrading microbes. However, the potential application of these microbial communities in chlorinated hydrocarbons bioremediation purposes such as trichloroethylene (TCe) has not yet been explored. Hence, this study investigated the mud volcano's microbial diversity functional potentiality in TCe degradation as well as their eco-physiological profiling using metabolic activity. Geochemical analysis of the mud volcano samples revealed variations in pH, temperature, and oxidation-reduction potential, indicating diverse environmental conditions. The Biolog ecoplate™ carbon substrates utilization pattern showed that the Tween 80 was highly consumed by mud volcanic microbial community. Similarly, MicroResp® analysis results demonstrated that presence of additive C-substrates condition might enhanced the cellular respiration process within mud-volcanic microbial community. Full-length 16 S rRNA sequencing identified Proteobacteria as the dominant phylum, with genera like Pseudomonas and Hydrogenophaga associated with chloroalkane degradation, and methanotrophic bacteria such as Methylomicrobium and Methylophaga linked to methane oxidation. Functional analysis uncovered diverse metabolic functions, including sulfur and methane metabolism and hydrocarbon degradation, with specific genes involved in methane oxidation and sulfur metabolism. These findings provide insights into the microbial diversity and metabolic capabilities of mud volcano ecosystems, which could facilitate their effective application in the bioremediation of chlorinated compounds. © 2024

Battery system design and development is prioritizing environmentally friendly recycling processes to ensure a sustainable future for our planet. The reuse of active materials in Li-ion batteries is critical for this goal. Herein, we investigated the electrochemical performance of Li3VO4 (LVO) anode with pectin as a binder. Our Li-ion half-cells showed stable capacity of 230 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.02 A g−1 after 100 cycles. In addition, we observed a novel enhanced specific capacity of 400 mAh g−1 during delithiation at a high current density of 1 A g−1, which did not occur during lithiation. This higher capacity was can be attributed to the pseudocapacitive lithium storage behavior in the LVO-pectin electrode, as identified by CV and eIS analyses. The heterostructure of LVO-pectin resulted in an interfacial surface charge that contributed to the capacity, as demonstrated by impedance spectroscopy in conjunction with the distribution of relaxation times. The utilization of pectin as an eco-friendly binder demonstrated nearly 90 % material recovery and 100 % capability for subsequent re-lithiation, indicating recyclability. Furthermore, the pseudocapacitive effect becomes increasingly dominant in regenerated LVO-pectin cells. These results exemplify a promising approach towards the development of environmentally friendly Li-ion batteries with high energy and power density. © 2023 elsevier Ltd

Respiratory auscultation can help healthcare professionals detect abnormal respiratory conditions if adventitious lung sounds are heard. The state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technologies based on deep learning show great potential in the development of automated respiratory sound analysis. To train a deep learning-based model, a huge number of accurate labels of normal breath sounds and adventitious sounds are needed. In this paper, we demonstrate the work of developing a respiratory sound labeling software to help annotators identify and label the inhalation, exhalation, and adventitious respiratory sound more accurately and quickly. Our labeling software integrates six features from MATLAB Audio Labeler, and one commercial audio editor, RX7. As of October, 2019, we have labeled 9,765 15- second-long audio files of breathing lung sounds, and accrued 34,095 inhalation labels,18,349 exhalation labels, 13,883 continuous adventitious sounds (CASs) labels and 15,606 discontinuous adventitious sounds (DASs) labels, which are significantly larger than previously published studies. The trained convolutional recurrent neural networks based on these labels showed good performance with F1-scores of 86.0% on inhalation event detection, 51.6% on CASs event detection and 71.4% on DASs event detection. In conclusion, our results show that our proposed respiratory sound labeling software could easily pre-define a label, perform one-click labeling, and overall facilitate the process of accurately labeling. This software helps develop deep learning-based models that require a huge amount of labeled acoustic data. © 2021 SPIe.

Artificial intelligence (AI) training courses often require prerequisites such as calculus or statistics. It is hence challenging to design and develop an introductory AI course for students of secondary education. This research intends to develop a medical AI course, provide high school students with an overview of deep learning applications in medical image analysis, and inspire them to pursue careers in the field of medical AI. We designed a 20-hour course, including lectures and two hands-on projects based on medical image classification. The proposed courses provided medical AI disciplines and built up their knowledge from basic to advanced levels. During the ten-day online courses, all the students were fully engaged and gave us positive feedback. The students endeavored to complete the experimental study in training, testing, and hypothesis of medical images application in the course. Their performance exceeded all expectations, for they did further analysis by tuning different hyperparameters. We designed a course evaluation form, which suggested that the students found it essential and expected to interact with the instructors. The results indicate that combining lectures with hands-on sessions would lead to evidently better achievement in terms of high school students' medical AI knowledge and positive attitudes while addressing real-world problems in the projects. Through this innovative education model, high school students regained their enthusiasm and were encouraged to cultivate their medical AI skills through self-learning while finishing the project. We conclude that this course could be successfully applied to interdisciplinary education in high school. © 2021 SPIe.

Globally, animal production has developed rapidly as a consequence of the ongoing population growth, to support food security. This has consequently led to an extensive use of antibiotics to promote growth and prevent diseases in animals. However, most antibiotics are not fully metabolized by these animals, leading to their excretion within urine and faeces, thus making these wastes a major reservoir of antibiotics residues, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in the environment. Farmers normally depend on conventional treatment methods to mitigate the environmental impact of animal waste;however, these methods are not fully efficient to remove the environmental resistome. The present study reviewed the variability of residual antibiotics, ARB, as well as ARGs in the conventionally treated waste and assessed how discharging it could increase resistome in the receiving environments. Wherein, considering the efficiency and environmental safety, an addition of pre-treatments steps with these conventional treatment methods could enhance the removal of antibiotic resistance agents from livestock waste. © 2023

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a human and animal-associated opportunistic pathogen. The bioaerosols from livestock units have been identified to spread MRSA from indoor to outdoor ambient environments and represent a significant risk to public health. Different bioaerosol sampling methods (filtration, impingement, impaction, cyclone, condensation, electrostatic precipitation etc.) have been discussed based on their merits. In this report, we conducted a literature survey approach to understand the lineages of MRSA clones in various livestock air via molecular typing classification, as well as the function of bioaerosol transmission which could impose infection risk in other clean settings. Our analysis found that globally the spa types t011, t002, t034, t127, and t899 are widespread genotype lineages in different livestock's farm air. It is noteworthy that the MRSA clones ST398 and ST9 are most commonly found in livestock settings and carry various types of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) elements. In addition, the aerosolization process in livestock units helps to increase the load of MRSA colony in ambient air, which could transmit to the downwind direction of the livestock farms. Ultimately, in the molecular classification of prevalent MRSA clones in livestock settings, the air dynamics are essential in assessing the potential risk of bioaerosol transmission towards outdoor ambient environments. A basic hygiene-driven One-Health approach is critical in mitigating the risks associated with MRSA transmission from livestock settings and promoting public health. Furthermore, to avoid outbreaks, continuous surveillance and effective infection control measures are necessary to prevent the spread of MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant bacteria in both animal and human populations. © 2024 elsevier Ltd

Purpose: This study was to investigate the association between the use of Sodium-glucose Cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) or angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI;ie, Sacubitril + valsartan, Product name eNTReSTO) and the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with coexisting diabetes and heart failure. Specifically, the study compared outcomes between patients using SGLT2i or valsartan + sacubitril and those not using these medications. Methods: This study utilized data from the national Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from 2017 to 2018. The case group consisted of 8691 patients with coexisting diabetes and heart failure who did not use SGLT2i or entresto, while the control group consisted of 8691 patients with coexisting diabetes and heart failure who used SGLT2i or entresto. The primary outcome was ASCVD, including a composite of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for worsening heart failure. Secondary outcomes included all-cause death, cause of cardiovascular death, and recurrence of heart failure, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke (including ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke) and new renal replacement therapy. Results: The study found that the use of SGLT2 inhibitors or ARNI was associated with a lower risk of ASCVD in patients with coexisting diabetes and heart failure. Conclusion: The study suggests that the use of SGLT2 inhibitors, alone or in combination with entresto, may be effective in reducing the risk of ASCVD and its associated adverse outcomes in patients with diabetes and heart failure. This finding has important implications for the management of these conditions. © The Author(s) 2024.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent and may be linked to cardiovascular disease in a bidirectional manner. The taiwan Society of Cardiology, taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine and taiwan Society of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine established a task force of experts to evaluate the evidence regarding the assessment and management of SDB in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), hypertension and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFreF). The GRADe process was used to assess the evidence associated with 15 formulated questions. The task force developed recommendations and determined strength (Strong, Weak) and direction (For, Against) based on the quality of evidence, balance of benefits and harms, patient values and preferences, and resource use. The resulting 11 recommendations are intended to guide clinicians in determining which the specific patient-care strategy should be utilized by clinicians based on the needs of individual patients. © 2023 Formosan Medical Association

The semiconductor industry is experiencing an accelerated transformation to overcome the scaling limits of the transistor and to adapt to new requirements in terms of data storage and computation, especially driven by artificial intelligence applications and the Internet of Things. In this process, new materials, devices, integration strategies and system architectures are being developed and optimized. Among them, memristive devices and circuits—memristors are two-terminal memory devices that can also mimic some basic bioelectronic functions—offer a potential approach to create more compact, energy-efficient or better-performing systems. The memristor industry is growing quickly, raising abundant capital investment, creating new jobs and placing advanced products in the market. Here we analyse the status and prospects of the memristor industry, focusing on memristor-based products that are already commercially available, prototypes with a high technological readiness level that might affect the market in the near future, and discuss obstacles and pathways to their implementation. © Springer Nature Limited 2025.
