Resulting from an interdisciplinary endeavor, the paper proposes an ontological model for supporting collaborative work practices in critical settings, and shows its application to a specific domain. The model is empirically-grounded, as based on ethnographic research carried out at an international airport-clearly an example of safety-critical environment, where emergency prevention and preparedness are crucial. On the other hand, the model leverages on previous ontological work on collaboration and observation in emergency response, and revises it when necessary, thus contributing to its development. Taking hand-baggage screening as an example, the paper shows how the model can be applied, and how it could be used to run model-based simulation in order to better understand collaborative work practices and analyze the impact of different techno-organizational changes on such practices and their effectiveness. This could result in suggesting guidelines for enhancing workflow, security policies and, more generally, time- and safety-critical situations management.

This paper presents a new code compression method in which we merge the Huffman algorithm with the formation of patterns of blocks and three dictionaries. We seek two consecutive blocks in two levels, one of them into compressed code and the other related to uncompressed code. We have used simulation with SimpleScalar and programs from MiBench. Our proposal has achieved a compression rate of 32.6% and 31.9%, respectively, for ARM and MIPS processor. © 2013 IEEE.

Manaus, the capital city of the state of Amazonas and the sixth Brazilian largest gross domestic product, demands highly qualified hardware and software developers for consumer electronics and telecommunication sectors of its free trading zone. However, what can be viewed as an opportunity for the youth alumni of local institutions of higher education contrasts with the low level of qualification provided by such institutions. As a consequence, most positions either remain opened or are occupied by professionals from other Brazilian regions. Moreover, the issue relies more on soft skills than on hard skills, as the local institutions are aligned with International standard academic curriculum and cover modern technologies. Soft skill is the enter barrier to the job market. English proficiency, communication skill, writing (in both Portuguese and English) skill, among others, are top listed failure reasons in the hiring processes. As one project manager highlighted: “it is much cheaper and quicker for the company to fill in some specific technological gaps, than to leverage a poor English proficiency”. This paper presents a proposal of an involving activity aiming to address several soft skills at the same time, with minimal disturbance in the student daily routine. The concept is based on the impact of immersing the student in a systematic project development experience. Clear communicated project goal, where the students have specific roles, with assigned accountable peers, everything under the umbrella of an Agile-like software development process (derived from SCRUM) are in the core of the activity. This paper details the incremental implementation methodology of the program among four research areas, and 23 projects or project activities, involving 34 students. The applications aimed at monitoring and controlling smart homes and buildings, health, industrial environments, traffic, energy consumption, resources, and so on, are being increasingly deployed due to the advantages they provide, increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. In this context Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have become a leading solution providing the appropriate mean to get and collect data and deliver it for their processing. Sensor nodes in a WSN have resource constraints, presenting low processing power and, in some cases, restrictions in power consumption. Resources availability constraints force researchers and engineers to develop proper Operating Systems (OS) aimed at low-power wireless devices, and one of the most important and in active use is the TinyOS. This paper describes an experimental analysis and evaluation which investigates relevant features and evaluates the performance (throughput, network delay, success rate, and energy consumption) of WSN under the constraint of using the low-power-consumption-aimed chosen operating system in an harsh outdoor industrial environment for with two different protocols: Active Message (AM) layer protocol and the fully 802.15.4 compliant protocol stack TKN15.4. Based on the results we conclude that TKN15.4 is better in energy consumption and success rate. On the other hand, AM protocol allows running multiple services using the same radio, but at the cost of an excessive energy consumption. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The standard IEEE 802.15.4e shows several improvements which makes it outperforming the predecessor IEEE 802.15.4 standard. A remarkable improvement is the use of multiple channels and the capability to choose the most convenient depending on the network links state. Hence, different techniques can be provisioned to dynamically select the most appropriate channel for establishing the link through an adaptive mechanism. During the contention-free periods, the Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) mode is based on channel hopping while the Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-channel Extension (DSME) mode uses either channel hopping or channel adaptation. In scenarios where channel diversity techniques are used for channel adaptation nodes links are established using the same channel as long as the channel quality (SNR) is high enough. In consequence to guarantee link best performance, its quality must be measured periodically to decide whether continue in the same channel of switch to a better performance one. Our investigation focuses on the analysis of the performance of three different approaches which pretend to take advantage of the multichannel capabilities of the new standard, based on the DSME protocol: CH-DSME which is based on a simple channel hopping mechanism, CA-DSME which employs channel adaptation, and a novel hybrid approach (H-DSME) which combines channel hopping and channel adaptation. This investigation shows that, in an industrial environment, the H-DSME outperforms both CH-DSME and CA-DSME approaches. In this work, the Castalia simulator was used to perform the simulations, using a reliable simulation model, which captures the characteristics of the wireless channel in industrial environments in long range basis. The analysis demonstrates that channel adaptation is better than channel hopping for unicast packets transmission, when links quality are continuously measured. This full paper presents the Multi-Agent Recommendation System for Recommending Accessible Learning Objects developed to attend students with disabilities and professors' computation area. The system was proposed based on the qualitative analysis of the questionnaires applied and answered by the professors of the area, to classify, organize and provide the most appropriate Learning Objects according to professors' preferences. In this way, the professor informs the type of impairment (visual, physical, hearing and/or cognitive), discipline and content, based on these requirements, receives the best recommendations of the intelligent agent. The methodology that we use is Multiagent Systems Engineering. The web page was developed using the Laravel Framework PHP, the data repository was created using the MySQL database, and to perform the implementation we used the Java Agent Development Framework. As a result of the research, we present a recommendation system of accessible learning objects using intelligent agents and communities of practice through the recommendation mechanism based on trust. The results obtained through the implementation of the system provide a new motivational practice trough accessible educational content, which contributes significantly to the teaching-learning process of the computation course and to inclusive education.

This Research Full Paper presents a pedagogical approach to evaluate a virtual platform for teaching robotics at a distance. The virtual environment was developed using the principles of Collaborative Learning. This virtual platform, called groupware, should facilitate interaction between those involved in the teaching and learning process, whether the student or the teacher. In this research, we will use Educational Robotics as a mediating tool in the teaching and learning process, because it has become a powerful tool that has stimulated the acquisition of knowledge in computing. In the groupware used in this research, Multi-Agent Systems were used to collaborate with teachers in the management of activities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functionality and usability of this virtual environment. A qualitative, exploratory research was used and to assess the usability of this virtual environment, the usability evaluation techniques were used with the Syetem Usabily Scale metric, and the technique of evaluation of feelings through EmoCards. Ten computer teachers participated in this research, with training and specializations in the areas of computing. Collaborative Learning was used as a focus for solving the tasks proposed for this research. The results showed that the participants evaluated the groupware with great potential to collaborate in robotics teaching and with content appropriate to the students' initial level of learning. The teachers' perceptions regarding the usability of the evaluated groupware revealed that it is favorable in the teaching of robotics and allowed an analysis of the importance of collaborative learning in the educational environment, directly impacting their ways of conducting learning.

This Research Full paper presents a Systematic Mapping Study of actions that are being carried out in the academic environment, aiming at teaching robotics and programming through collaborative procedures at a distance. Recent studies point to an increasing utilization of collaborative activities in teaching-learning process of robotics and programming, favoring the STEM fields, with encouraging results regarding the improvement of student's skills and better use of educational institutions infrastructure. Our goal is to collect information about state of the art on collaborative learning, employed through Groupware. To carry out this investigation, goals were defined by the Systematic Mapping Process, with the purpose of providing a better process understanding. The Research Questions were stipulated to be answered after the results analysis and the Search Strings, which allowed to select publications that satisfy the objective of this research articles in main digital repositories, all carried out in the last 5 years. After applying filters, 22 articles were considered more relevant according to the research objective. The results show the activities, modalities, methodologies, accomplished pedagogical concepts and the conclusions obtained. This work aims to assist researchers who seek information on referred topic.

This study aimed to study the influences of the pedagogical use of audio and video media by students in the production of educational content, using Internet research, reflections on the information and the recording of audio and video by secondary school students themselves in a public school in Rio Grande do Sul. The main question sought to answer how to use multisemiotic literacies of reading, writing, pictures, photos, audio and video production of school content to obtain meaningful learning. Preliminary results indicate a gradual increase in motivation and reflection of students by research, reading and writing the information in the teaching of the Portuguese language and literature. The experience has also shown the need for teacher training for the pedagogical use of communication, interaction and collaboration environments in social networks and technical training in the use of audio and video media in the classroom. The positive points observed in the research are the improvement of the capacity for reflection, motivation for contextual research, use of social networks as a communication and collaboration environment in group work, production of educational materials in audio and video media, improved self-criti- cism due to physical exposure of the students in the videos, speaking in public and 360? assessment performed by the students.

Applying MGAP Modeling to the Hard Real-time Task Allocation on Multiple Heterogeneous Processors Problem

The usage of heterogeneous multicore platforms is appealing for applications, e.g. hard real-time systems, due to the potential reduced energy consumption offered by such platforms. However, the power wall is still a barrier to improving the processor design process due to the power consumption of components. Hard real-time systems are part of life critical environments and reducing the energy consumption on such systems is an onerous and complex process. This paper reassesses the problem of finding assignments of hard real-time tasks among heterogeneous processors taking into account timing constraints and targeting low power consumption. We also propose models based on a well-established literature formulation of the Multilevel Generalized Assignment Problem (MGAP). We tackle the problem from the perspective of different integer programming mathematical formulations and their interplay on the search for optimal solutions. Experimentation shows that using strict schedulability tests as constraints of 0/1 integer linear programming results in faster solvers capable of finding optimum solutions with lower power consumption.
