Robustness or fault-tolerance capability of a network is an important design parameter in both wired and wireless networks. Connectivity of a network is traditionally considered to be the primary metric for evaluation of its fault-tolerance capability. However, connectivity (G) (for random faults) or region-based connectivity R(G) (for spatially correlated or region-based faults, where the faults are confined to a region R) of a network G, does not provide any information about the network state, (i.e., whether the network is connected or not) once the number of faults exceeds (G) or R(G). If the number of faults exceeds (G) or R(G), one would like to know, (i) the number of connected components into which G decomposes, (ii) the size of the largest connected component, (iii) the size of the smallest connected component. In this paper, we introduce a set of new metrics that computes these values. We focus on one particular metric called region-based component decomposition number (RBCDN), that measures the number of connected components in which the network decomposes once all the nodes of a region fail. We study the computational complexity of finding RBCDN of a network. In addition, we study the problem of least cost design of a network with a target value of RBCDN. We show that the optimal design problem is NP-complete and present an approximation algorithm with a performance bound of O(log K + 4log n), where n denotes the number of nodes in the graph and K denotes a target value of RBCDN. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm by comparing it with the performance of the optimal solution. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm produces near optimal solution in a fraction of time needed to find an optimal solution. © 2011 IEEE.

Developing safe and reliable software is not a luxury but a necessity given our staggering level of dependency on it. Indeed, we have handed over our ability to function day to day to an electronic array or zeros and ones and we expect, demand and rely on these invisible bits to work without error or fault. However, the process of building such reliable software is far from simple. This paper will examine the practical aspects of the problem as well as solutions that are either used or in the process of being evaluated and/or adopted by an NYC based financial institution to produce safe and reliable software.

IT/OT convergence in the form of a Cyber-Physical system (CPS) presents an opportunity to apply recent Information Technology (IT) advancements to Operational Technology (OT). The IT/OT convergence introduces cyber security threats for OT. The OT communication protocols, for example, have limited or no security capabilities for securing data exchange beyond basic authentication. The RNG (Random Number Generator) function is crucial in PLC for producing the encryption keys or the initial seed for security algorithms. The software-based PRNG (Pseudo RNG) is the most common approach for RNG in OT, instead of hardware-based RNG. This study provides a systematic literature review of the most recent evidence in digital transformation to secure data exchange in smart factories, within OT, or across OT and IT settings. It does this by looking at the PRNG on PLC and identifying the most recent trends and best practices. The findings include up-to-date data on author countries' distribution, published journals, research trends, industries, and industry types. The findings also address whether data flow is encrypted or shared in plaintext to ensure secure data transfer between IT and legacy OT environments. This paper concludes that while there is known RNG implementation in the actual embedded system in ICS, there is no evidence in the literature for using RNG in ICS networks for PLC implementation to secure data transfer with encryption. © 2024 IEEE.

The lungs are one of the organs of the body that are responsible for the human respiratory process and are very susceptible to dangerous diseases. For this reason, early detection and diagnosis of lung organs is needed, one of which is through examination of Chest X-Ray (CXR) images. Examination of the results of CXR images is still done manually by doctors and radiologists, this requires time and high accuracy. To facilitate the examination, it is necessary to image quality enhancement in order to get better image quality results so as to produce an accurate diagnosis. The initial stage in this research is to apply the contour improvement technique to the image using Morphology Opening, and followed by noise reduction using Median Filter and Gaussian filter. The results of the two methods of noise reduction are compared with the results of image quality in order to find out the best method that can be applied. The implementation of image quality enhancement results was measured quantitatively using Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Mean Square Error (MSE), and Structural Similarity Index Metrics (SSIM). In the Morphology Opening and Median Filter methods, the values obtained are 39.187, 22.252, and 0.952, respectively. Meanwhile, the Morphology Opening and Gaussian Filter methods obtained values of 38.717, 23.917 and 0.956. Based on these results, it can be concluded that both methods are able to improve image quality well. © 2022 IEEE.

Organizations have been relying on collaboration for productivity improvement and knowledge sharing. The first step to foster collaboration in organizations is to make it explicit. With this aim, the Collaboration Maturity Model (CollabMM) was proposed and evaluated. The lessons learned during model applications in previous work pointed out the need to review both the model and its evaluation instruments. A literature review also showed some improvement opportunities. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop a roadmap to highlight the main opportunities of evolution in CollabMM. These opportunities will compose our research agenda in this topic and guide future work. © 2011 IEEE.

Short-term memory is essential for cognitive processing, yet our understanding of its neural mechanisms remains unclear. A key focus in neuroscience has been the study of sequential activity patterns, where neurons fire one after another within large networks, to explain how information is maintained. While recurrent connections were shown to drive sequential dynamics, a mechanistic understanding of this process still remains unknown. In this work, we first introduce two unique mechanisms that can subserve short-term memory: slow-point manifolds generating direct sequences or limit cycles providing temporally localized approximations. Then, through analytical models, we identify fundamental properties that govern the selection of these mechanisms, i.e., we derive theoretical scaling laws for critical learning rates as a function of the delay period length, beyond which no learning is possible. We empirically verify these observations by training and evaluating more than 35,000 recurrent neural networks (RNNs) that we will publicly release upon publication. Overall, our work provides new insights into short-term memory mechanisms and proposes experimentally testable predictions for systems neuroscience. © 2025, CC BY.

In general, public or private organizations or companies have used information-based technology as a support to improve business performance to be more effective and efficient in order to achieve a company's business goals. Given the large contribution of information technology in the application of hotel applications as a supporting information system, it is a vital system that must avoid risks that can hinder and cause harm to the hotel management business processes. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out risk management using the COBIT 5 framework to manage possible risks that may occur based on the APO12 (Manage Risk) domain. From the evaluation results of the data obtained through observation and interviews as well as the calculation of the results of the questionnaire based on 6 APO12 subdomains, the results of the risk management level capability assessment in hotel applications are still at level 3 or have reached the level of established process with the target to be achieved at level 4 resulting in a gap of 1 level. Based on the results obtained, it is necessary to propose recommendations that can be used by hotels in improving the application of information technology risk management so that in the future it can achieve the expected target level so that the APO12 level of capability can increase and become more optimal. © 2023 IEEE.

Cloud computing will play an essential role in smart power grid by providing a cost-efficient, scalable IT platform for the delivery and management of electricity. A key component in the cloud-based smart power grid is the intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), which monitor, control, and protect the power system, and collect data back into the cloud for analysis and management. To maintain proper and robust operations of the power system, the collected data must be time-stamped under a common time reference. This in turn demands that the clocks of the distributed IEDs be synchronized to the required precision. A viable approach is to equip some of the IEDs with the Global Positioning system (GPS) as the time references and use the communication links already existing between the IEDs to synchronize the clocks of those without GPS. The question is, given a set of such references nodes, how to decide whether the clocks of all the IEDs can be synchronized to the required precision. If not, how can one add fewest reference nodes to meet the requirements? This paper addresses these issues and proposes efficient algorithms to solve the problems. © 2011 IEEE.

Background: The adoption of Agile methods has grown significantly and now almost all software companies state that they are using some aspects of Agile in their software processes. However, the introduction of Agile methods into a software development environment is not a straightforward process. Thus, Agility Assessment (AA) is an important tool that supports the evaluation of how well a company has adopted the agile approach. Problem: Agility Assessment is usually a manual process and there are few automatic steps during the various phases. Part of this limitation arises because the requirements to check the agility of a project/company are still described in natural language and spread across many sources of documents such as manifestos and company policies. Aim: The aim of this paper is to organize the body of knowledge related to Agile Methods and identify a set of requirements that can be used in an Agility Assessment process. We extend the metaphor of a bad smell to an Agility Assessment context and propose the term Bad Agile Smell to describe an early warning signal that something in an agile project may need to be adjusted. Method: A literature review, as well a survey with practitioners, were conducted to identify a set of Agility Bad Smells. The resulting set of identified Agility Bad Smells is presented as a structured catalog. Result: We identified a set of 20 Bad Agile Smells for agile methods that were considered relevant according to research criteria.
