Advances in technology have resulted in Internet-scale deployment of storage systems such as peer-to-peer storage and cloud storage, where data is distributed over multiple storage nodes in a networked environment. In these environments the storage nodes are often commodity machines and are susceptible to failure. The notion of fault domain, introduced by Microsoft Azure, captures the fault-tolerance aspects of a data center. A fault domain is defined as a set of servers all of which become inaccessible when a single fault (such as the failure of a switch or a router) occurs in the data center. As such a fault domain can be viewed as a spatially correlated or region based failure. In order to enhance reliability through redundancy, maximum distance separable (MDS) codes such as Reed-Solomon codes and (N, K) codings are utilized. In this paper we present analytical results demonstrating that the choice of the coding parameters N and K may have significant impact on storage that will be necessary to achieve reliability. We present a polynomial time algorithm for optimal storage allocation in a mesh network and we conduct extensive experimentation to evaluate the impact of the coding parameters N and K on the storage requirement to provide all region fault tolerance with varying size of the mesh and the fault region.

Studies on communication network robustness, though extensive, have primarily focused on standalone networks. However, real world communication networks do not operate in isolation, but instead are part of complex interdependent ecosystems that function together as a comprehensive symbiotic unit. For instance, communication networks of today are highly dependent on the power infrastructure and hence, any efforts to improve the robustness of communication networks must necessarily take into account the vulnerabilities of the power infrastructure and their shared interdependencies. For example, event-induced failures (failures caused by natural disasters or terrorist attacks), on any of these two infrastructures can trigger further failures (triggered failures) into the system through a cascading process due to the interdependencies between the networks. In such an interdependent system where an event induced failure can cascade and result in a much larger combined (event-induced plus triggered) failure, it may be imperative to identify the original event-induced failure for the purpose of post fault diagnostics, or for pre-cascade network strengthening. This ascertainment of event-induced original failure, or the Root Cause of Failure, from combined failures in interdependent Power-Communication networks is the main focus of this paper. We model interdependencies between the two infrastructures using the recently proposed Implicative Interdependency Model. We introduce the Root Cause of Failure problem, and prove it to be NP-Complete. We also provide optimal solutions using ILP, and provide an O(ln(n)) approximation algorithm. Finally, we validate our analytical results through experiments in the power communication network of Maricopa County, Arizona.

Wireless communication via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has drawn a great deal of attention due to its flexibility in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) communications. However, in complex urban and dynamic environments, the movement of UAVs can be blocked by trees and high-rise buildings that obstruct directional paths. This problem can be effectively addressed by employing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). To achieve this goal, accurate channel estimation in RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications is crucial. This paper proposes an accurate channel estimation model using long short-term memory (LSTM) for a multi-user RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications system. Simulation results showed that LSTM can effectively improve the channel estimation performance of RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

Indonesia had been suffered by earthquake and tsunami for many centuries. Since many lives have taken by tsunami strikes, alert and response system are very important as important part of Disaster Risk Reduction, especially in area with high population density. This research conducted in Kangkung fishing village in Bandar Lampung coastal area which is an earthquake and tsunami prone area. The aim of the research is to study alert and response of Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction. The research conducted by qualitative method and purposive-descriptive approach. There were 53 respondents which participated in the survey and interview. It is reported that "Smart Resilient City"model suitable for community needs of alert and response of earthquake and tsunami disaster. This research meets conclusion that "Smart Resilient City"model may become a great solution in Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction to cope with the hazard of earthquake and tsunami comprehensively and sustainably. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Robustness or fault-tolerance capability of a network is an important design parameter in both wired and wireless networks. Connectivity of a network is traditionally considered to be the primary metric for evaluation of its fault-tolerance capability. However, connectivity κ(G) (for random faults) or region-based connectivity κ R (G) (for spatially correlated or region-based faults, where the faults are confined to a region R) of a network G, does not provide any information about the network state, (i.e., whether the network is connected or not) once the number of faults exceeds κ(G) or κ R (G). If the number of faults exceeds κ(G) or κ R (G), one would like to know, (i) the number of connected components into which G decomposes, (ii) the size of the largest connected component, (iii) the size of the smallest connected component. In this paper, we introduce a set of new metrics that computes these values. We focus on one particular metric called region-based component decomposition number (RBCDN), that measures the number of connected components in which the network decomposes once all the nodes of a region fail. We study the computational complexity of finding RBCDN of a network. In addition, we study the problem of least cost design of a network with a target value of RBCDN. We show that the optimal design problem is NP-complete and present an approximation algorithm with a performance bound of O(log K + 4log n), where n denotes the number of nodes in the graph and K denotes a target value of RBCDN. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm by comparing it with the performance of the optimal solution. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm produces near optimal solution in a fraction of time needed to find an optimal solution.

Distributed storage of data files in different nodes of a network enhances the reliability of the data by offering protection against node failure. In the (N,K),N ≥ K file distribution scheme, from a file F of size |F|, N segments of size |F|/K are created in such a way that it is possible to reconstruct the entire file, just by accessing any K segments. For the reconstruction scheme to work it is essential that the K segments of the file are stored in nodes that are connected in the network. However in case of node failures the network might become disconnected (i.e., split into several connected components). We focus on node failures that are spatially-correlated or region-based. Such failures are often encountered in disaster situations or natural calamities where only the nodes in the disaster zone are affected. The goal of this research is to devise a file segment distribution scheme so that, even if the network becomes disconnected due to any region fault, at least one of the largest connected components will have at least K distinct file segments with which to reconstruct the entire file. The distribution scheme will also ensure that the total storage requirement is minimized. We provide an optimal solution through Integer Linear programming and an approximation solution with a guaranteed performance bound of O(ln n) to solve the problem for any arbitrary network. The performance of the approximation algorithm is evaluated by simulation on two real networks.

In the context of smart cities where green infras-tructure is incentived, besides important benefits like regulating temperatures and absorbing pollutants among others, tour by urban forests is a way to experience closer contact with nature near of big urban centers. Eventually, visitors get lost, and helping these people with velocity is important to avoid severe incidents. Normally, rescue operations mobilize firefighters, ex-pensive equipment like helicopters and public resources. Following that idea of reducing search time in rescue operations, this paper considers the Data Mule Routing Problem with Limited Autonomy (DMRP-wLA). To find high-quality solutions, this paper proposes an Ant Colony Optimization algorithm enhanced with Reinforcement Learning to create an adaptive decision-making algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

The test activities performed during the life cycle of the telecommunication service development ensure the service quality and stability so necessary to achieve the maximum availability and reliability. The paper presents authors' contribution to remote and distributed testing for mobile communications services based on cloud computing assets and paradigms. The access solutions to the test methods were implemented for the GSM and GSM-R (Global system for Mobile - Railways) related Intelligent Networks services. The scalability and flexibility of the architecture allows to the proposed solution to be used, for both the production and the educational environments, to access the resources located on the different sites for the tests purpose. The concept of the remote test solution and the practical examples based on the remote tests with real equipments are presented in this paper.

Indonesia has entered a period of demographic bonus. Human resources must be optimized. The number of children who do not in employment, education or training (NEET) in each province needs attention. Several factors that could contribute to the decline in the NEET percentage are literacy rates and the number of adolescents with computer skills. Increasing these two factors is believed to be able to reduce the percentage of NEET in every province in Indonesia. To find out the relationship between these two factors and how much influence they have on the percentage of NEET, this research is modeled by Cauchy regression and includes spatial effects. The results of the analysis show that the best model is when the spatial effect is modeled by Fernandez Steel Skew Normal conditionally autoregressive (FSSN CAR). This result is seen from the smallest value of the Watanabe Akaike Information Criterion (WAIC) in this model, which is 190.5. The parameter estimated shows that the higher the literacy rate and the number of adolescents with computer skills, the lower the percentage of NEET in each province in Indonesia. The results of this research can be useful for the Indonesian government to increase the number of educational facilities related to these two factors. © (2024), (International Association of Engineers). IT/OT convergence in the form of a Cyber-Physical system (CPS) presents an opportunity to apply recent Information Technology (IT) advancements to Operational Technology (OT). The IT/OT convergence introduces cyber security threats for OT. The OT communication protocols, for example, have limited or no security capabilities for securing data exchange beyond basic authentication. The RNG (Random Number Generator) function is crucial in PLC for producing the encryption keys or the initial seed for security algorithms. The software-based PRNG (Pseudo RNG) is the most common approach for RNG in OT, instead of hardware-based RNG. This study provides a systematic literature review of the most recent evidence in digital transformation to secure data exchange in smart factories, within OT, or across OT and IT settings. It does this by looking at the PRNG on PLC and identifying the most recent trends and best practices. The findings include up-to-date data on author countries' distribution, published journals, research trends, industries, and industry types. The findings also address whether data flow is encrypted or shared in plaintext to ensure secure data transfer between IT and legacy OT environments. This paper concludes that while there is known RNG implementation in the actual embedded system in ICS, there is no evidence in the literature for using RNG in ICS networks for PLC implementation to secure data transfer with encryption.
