BPMN 2.0 is a widely used notation to model business process that has associated tools and techniques to facilitate process management, execution and monitoring. As a result using BPMN to model Software Development Process (SDP) can leverage on the BPMN's infrastructure to improve SDP quality. Nevertheless, when using BPMN to model Software Processes one can observe the lack of an important feature: means to represent process tailoring. This article introduces the BPMNt, a conservative extension to BPMN that aims at aggregating a tailoring representation mechanism as the one found at SPEM 2.0. BPMNt uses the extensibility classes already present in the BPMN meta-model. Our work also presents an example to illustrate the approach. © 2012 IEEE.

A person-computer ensemble system is one of time concerned cooperative systems, which performs the secondo in an ensemble played by a computer-controlled piano cooperating with the primo played by a person musician. For expressive performances, it is necessary to prepare very expressive secondo data before the actual cooperative performance, since the system is modified its expression in realtime using the agogic information calculated from the input stream of the primo. In this paper, a generating method of more expressive performance of the secondo, using the notions musical structures and structural functions, are introduced. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Considering a runtime compositional software adaptation, one important aspect about the engineering of self-adaptive systems is to decide how to reconfigure the software, that is, how to change its structure. After a desired configuration has been chosen for some context, the task is to decide how to achieve this desired state and, after that, execute this reconfiguration. Furthermore, this reconfiguration plan must be correct in relation to the programming model, the application architectural restrictions and, must leave the application in a consistent state. The plan execution must guarantee some level of reliability not to bring the system in an undesired state. In order to automate the reconfiguration, this work proposes an approach that employs Artificial Intelligence techniques to solve this issue. The reconfiguration plans are based on a model of cause and effect, which describes the set of reconfiguration actions from the underlying component model and, this component model provides a reflective support to execute the generated reconfiguration plan. Complexity and dynamism of day-to-day activities in organizations are inextricably linked, one impacting the other, increasing the challenges for constant adaptation on the way to organize work to address emerging demands. Market is demanding systems that are aware of organizations processes and able to evolve and adapt to new situations in everyday working activities. We argue that flexibility in processes could be managed in real time, by PAIS (Process-aware Information systems), using context information collected in the work environment. This paper proposes CGAdapt, a context management architecture approach that aims to improve and automate dynamic process adaptation. We explain how process adaptation may occur in real time through an existent scenario using this proposal and discuss the value of context-awareness to reason about process alternative adaptations in a goal oriented approach. © 2012 IEEE.

Networks-on-Chip (NoC) have been used as an interesting option in design of communication infrastructures for embedded systems, providing a scalable structure and balancing the communication between cores. Because several data packets can be transmitted simultaneously through the network, an efficient routing strategy must be used in order to avoid congestion delays. In this paper, ant colony algorithms were used to find and optimize routes in a mesh-based NoC, where several randomly generated applications have been mapped. The routing optimization is driven by the minimization of total latency in packets transmission between tasks. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the ant colony inspired routing by comparing it with general purpose algorithms for deadlock free routing. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Business processes modeling projects are increasingly widespread in organizations, which usually invest much in hiring expert consultants to do such job. These consultants come from various organizations, and have different experiences on how to perform the same activity. This paper analyzes how human-related capabilities influence the effort required to conduct a business process modeling project and discusses the results obtained from about 50 projects executed in a large Brazilian company. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Reservoir Computing (RC) is a computational model in which a trained readout layer interprets the dynamics of a component called a reservoir that is excited by external input stimuli. The reservoir is often constructed using homogeneous neural networks in which a neuron's in-degree distributions as well as its functions are uniform. RC lends itself to computing with physical and biological systems. However, most such systems are not homogeneous. In this paper, we use Random Boolean Networks (RBN) to build the reservoir. We explore the computational capabilities of such a RC device using the temporal parity task and the temporal density classification. We study the sufficient dynamics of RBNs using kernel quality and generalization rank measures. We verify findings by Lizier et al. (2008) that the critical connectivity of RBNs optimizes the balance between the high memory capacity of RBNs with (K) 2. We show that in a RBN-based RC system, the optimal connectivity for the parity task, a processing intensive task, and the density classification task, a memory intensive task, agree with Lizier et al.'s theoretical results. Our findings may contribute to the development of optimal selfassembled nanoelectronic computer architectures and biologically-inspired computing paradigms. © 2012 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The creation of tools, techniques and methodologies to support the manipulation of large data sets has been receiving special attention of both scientific and industrial communities, in order to discover new ways of dealing with the underlying information, including learning purposes, identification of patterns, decision making support, amongst others. However, making use of computing resources to enhance awareness and understanding of software information and the software itself is still a challenge in software/systems engineering, since it involves the identification of suitable mechanisms, adequate abstractions, and studies on stimulation of the human perceptive and cognitive abilities. This paper presents some of the challenges in this context, based on current trends of software development lifecycle, program comprehension, and software engineering education. At the end, a special focus is given on ongoing research on using and improving current mechanisms for supporting software reuse practices and software comprehension in general. © 2012 IEEE.
