Advanced air mobility (AAM) is being developed to address complex transportation challenges in urban environments. In this study, a scaled model of a boxed-wing tiltrotor AAM has been designed and implemented through simulation and flight testing, establishing a foundation for the future commercialization of AAM. All structural and aerodynamic factors involved in the design of the Boxed-wing were considered during the initial stage of development, and its aerodynamic performance was analyzed. A software-in-the-loop simulation was conducted by integrating the Gazebo simulator and PX4 to verify the performance of the simulation model. The model successfully followed the predefined waypoints during the simulation, and the control parameters derived from the simulation were then applied to the flight test. The key parameters among them were validated through the flight test, confirming their effectiveness in ensuring a stable flight. © ICROS 2025.

Salter's duck,an asymmetrical wave energy converter(WEC)device,showed high efficiency in extracting energy from 2D regular waves in the past;yet,challenges remain for fluctuating wave *** can potentially be addressed by adopting a negative stiffness mechanism(NSM)in WEC devices to enhance system efficiency,even in highly nonlinear and steep 3D waves.A weakly nonlinear model was developed which incorporated a nonlinear restoring moment and NSM into the linear formulations and was applied to an asymmetric WEC using a time domain potential flow *** model was initially validated by comparing it with published experimental and numerical computational fluid dynamics *** current results were in good agreement with the published *** was found that the energy extraction increased in the range of 6%to 17%during the evaluation of the effectiveness of the NSM in regular *** irregular wave conditions,specifically at the design wave conditions for the selected test site,the energy extraction increased by 2.4%,with annual energy production increments of approximately *** findings highlight the potential of NSM in enhancing the performance of asymmetric WEC devices,indicating more efficient energy extraction under various wave conditions.

In modern wireless communication systems using multiple antenna elements, accurately identifying the signals contained in the received signal is very important. Conventional signal number estimation algorithms operate for the entire set of antenna elements, resulting in high computational complexity. In order to enhance this high computational complexity problem, this paper proposes beamspace based Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Minimum Description Length (MDL) algorithms based on a concentric circular array (CCA) antenna for efficient signal number estimation. In addition, computer simulation results are presented to evaluate the signal-number estimation performance of the proposed algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

Purpose: The primary objective of this study is to present, analyze, and quantitatively characterize the electrical signals obtained from neuronal cultures coupled to micro-electrode arrays (MEAs). Special attention is given to the temporal evolution of electrical activity across distinct geometric regions of the MEA devices. Methods: The proposed methodology involves signal acquisition, classical analysis based on spike and burst detection, and, critically, the characterization of the probability density structure of the signals. This is achieved through the quantification of Gaussianity—expressed as the percentage of segments non-Gaussian (PSNG)—and stationarity— expressed as the percentage of segments non-stationary (PSNE). Results: Initial analyses showed that first-order power spectral density quantifiers lacked the statistical robustness required to effectively describe the complex components of MEA signals. In contrast, PSNG and PSNE demonstrated strong potential in capturing the different stages of neuronal culture development. Cluster analysis further supported the discriminative capacity of these quantifiers. Conclusion: The phase corresponding to decreased neuronal activity and onset of cell death—a biologically critical stage—exhibited the strongest correlation among the studied variables. These results suggest a discernible biological organization and highlight the relevance of PSNG and PSNE as promising tools for assessing neuronal culture dynamics. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering 2025.

In this paper, a control system based on Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Kalman Filter has been designed to stabilize the quadcopter in the takeoff and hover phases as well as at the expected altitude. The control system is needed to support the performance of the quadcopter in carrying out the mission that has been given. The designed control system begins with the creation of a system model equation and is implemented in a real quadcopter simulation. The resulting response in terms of the results of the resulting control signal is stable, meets the trajectory as expected, and can produce a real quadcopter simulation taking off vertically and flying stably. Even though there was an unstable response for about 15 to 20 seconds at the beginning of the resulting response, after that the system showed stability. Tracking the resulting trajectory in accordance with the desired trajectory. Real quadcopter simulation results show that the takeoff phase can be carried out vertically and that the resulting trajectory stability can be stable during takeoff and flight. The height of the quadcopter has reached 100%, namely with a height of 1.5 meters as expected, and the average error value obtained at the x position is 2.93e^-07, the y position is 2.96e^-07, and the z position is 1.80e^-03. The proposed SMC-Kalman filter control system is expected to be implemented in a conventional quadcopter that has been developed. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a Dead-reckoning (DR) method for vehicles using Lie theory. This approach treats the pose (position and attitude) and velocity of the vehicle as elements of the Lie group SE2(3) and follows computations based on Lie theory. Previously widely used DR methods suffer from cumulative errors over time due to inaccuracies in the calculated changes from velocity during the motion of the vehicle or small errors in modeling assumptions. By treating the pose and velocity of the vehicle as elements of the Lie group, the proposed method allows for accurate solutions without errors introduced by linearization. Experimental results confirm that the proposed method improves the accuracy of DR, particularly as the motion prediction time interval of the vehicle increases. © 2024 ICROS.

This paper proposes a solution for markerless gait analysis based on point cloud data, which are three-dimensional data obtained by sensors such as LiDAR, that can capture body movements in real-time and in various environments. Gait analysis aims to evaluate the differences in symmetry between the left and right sides of the body, which can indicate diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The point cloud is a sparse matrix with N points in 3D space and the intensity of reflected light, which does not have an ordering between the points and the minimum distance between them is responsible for the density of the cloud. In the proposed method the point cloud is transformed into voxels, which are cubic units that facilitate data processing, and each set of points in the voxel is used for person detection. The points of the person are used to segment the body parts, and each part is used to estimate the joint position. The joint position is used to construct a rigid body model, where a person is represented by their segments. The rotations and translations of the segment over time are used to build the gait analysis graph. By comparing the rotation of each segment over time, it is possible to calculate the difference between the left and right sides and detect at what moment of the movement the difference is large enough to indicate the onset of pathology. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Efficient data collection in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is crucial. While traditional approaches rely on stationary data sinks, the use of mobile sinks, like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), has shown promise in enhancing data-gathering capabilities. However, existing methods often overlook the importance of trust, leaving the network susceptible to malicious or faulty nodes. To address this issue, we propose a novel trust-aware data-gathering algorithm, Variable Length Multi-Objective Whale Optimization Data Gathering (VLMOWO-DG). Our algorithm simultaneously optimizes energy consumption, delay, and trust while employing mobile sinks to collect data from sensor nodes. By considering trust as a key performance metric, we improve data reliability and security. The VLMOWO-DG algorithm introduces flexibility through variable-length solution representation and application-oriented operators, allowing for efficient exploration of the solution space. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms established benchmarks, NSGA-II and NSGA-III, in terms of domination and hypervolume. This leads to a remarkable improvement of 200% in data gathering performance. © 2015 The Authors.

The precise detection of cephalometric landmarks on two-dimensional (2D) radiographs or three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) images is a fundamental step in various medical fields, especially in research on orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery. Deep learning-based detectors have demonstrated remarkable accuracy in 2D cephalometric analysis, whereas conventional single-view approaches are limited by their reliance on information from a single perspective. This study proposes GeoRefineNet, a novel multistage framework that leverages information from multiple CT scans acquired at various angles. By incorporating geometric knowledge through a 3D heatmap reconstruction process, GeoRefineNet improves robustness, accuracy, and adaptability to various cephalometric configurations. The proposed framework predicts 3D landmark positions on CT images, effectively addressing challenges associated with high-dimensional input data and limited training examples. GeoRefineNet surpasses the existing state-of-the-art models in the 2D and 3D domains, as demonstrated by its superior performance on numerical and clinical datasets. These findings indicate that GeoRefineNet offers a promising avenue for improving the accuracy and reliability of cephalometric landmark detection fostering further advances in clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. Solar photovoltaic generation and energy storage are being used to power rural places. However, remote users are burdened by private energy storage devices. Remoteness limits the economic viability of cooperative energy storage. Our work proposes a shared energy storage model considering battery degradation. To test the model, we compared Individual, Neighbor, and Communal scenarios. The system was built as a mixed integer linear programming model to investigate optimal operating methods. Compared to the other situations, the Neighbor scenario saves operational expenses by 4.97%. Finally, the self-consumption rate shows optimal penetration of renewable energy parameters. © 2024 IEEE.
