In this article we consider likelihood-based estimation of static parameters for a class of partially observed McKean-Vlasov (POMV) diffusion process with discrete-time observations over a fixed time interval. In particular, using the framework of [5] we develop a new randomized multilevel Monte Carlo method for estimating the parameters, based upon Markovian stochastic approximation methodology. New Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for the POMV model are introduced facilitating the application of [5]. We prove, under assumptions, that the expectation of our estimator is biased, but with expected small and controllable bias. Our approach is implemented on several examples. We develop a model describing long-range atom-atom interactions in a two-dimensional periodic or a-periodic lattice of optical centers inside a solid-state host material. We consider realistic environmental and technical conditions such as frequency and position broadening. Even when considering a significant frequency broadening in the ensemble (∼300 GHz), we observe up to a three-fold increase in directional scattering from the resonant lattice in a system. The model can be used to scalably design quantum optical elements, e.g. a quantum lens, harnessing atomistic engineering (e.g. via ion implantation) of collective interactions in materials to enhance quantum properties. © 2024, CC BY.

Nowadays, recommendation systems are widely used to help users locate the items they want. Collaborative filtering (CF) is a commonly used method for the recommendation. CF techniques use user-item ratings for prediction but suffer from the problems of data sparsity, cold start, and scalability. Though the Matrix Factorization (MF) techniques like Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) or Principal Component Analysis (PCA) overcome the above-mentioned problems, these methods are possible to deliver unmeaningful results in the condition of a low ranked approximation and denser singular vectors. In this paper, we review strategies of collaborative filtering recommendation mechanisms and propose an approach based on an autoencoder of convolutional neural network. Autoencoders are unsupervised learning methods in which neural networks are supported for the task of representation learning. We identify the user's features through learning, and then use these features to combine the collaborative filtering algorithm to recommend items. The experimental results show that the convolutional autoencoder can effectively reduce the computations when the amount of data is huge and benefited from the performance of its convolutional neural network. © 2021 IEEE.

The COVID-19 epidemic has had a huge impact on the educational landscape, prompting the adoption of online and remote learning as viable alternatives to conventional in-person instruction. In order to create effective educational methods as institutions prepare for the post-pandemic period, it is essential to understand students' preferences for various learning modes. With the aid of machine learning techniques, this study seeks to forecast preferences for learning styles in post-pandemic higher education. The study made use of a dataset compiled from a wide range of college students, which included information on the institution type (public or private), program type (bachelor's or diploma), academic discipline (science or humanities), gender, year of study, internet use, communication costs, comorbidity status, vaccination history, gadget and laptop ownership, and preferred learning mode (online, in-person, or both). For the aim of prediction, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used. Its kernel functions included linear, polynomial, radial basis function (RBF), and sigmoid. Performance criteria like accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were used to assess the models after the dataset was randomly partitioned into training and testing sets. The findings showed that for identifying the preferred mode of learning, SVM with the RBF kernel had the highest prediction accuracy (91.67%). Further proving the RBF kernel's efficacy, the confusion matrix analysis showed that high values in the diagonal represented accurate predictions for each of the three classes (both online and onsite). The results imply that machine learning approaches, in particular SVM with the RBF kernel, may accurately forecast students' preferences for learning modes in the post-pandemic situation. In a post-pandemic society, the findings provide insightful information that may be used to build adaptable and inclusive learning models and put them into practice.

The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system plays a crucial role in clinical planning, offering valuable insights for effectively managing hepatocellular carcinoma. Accurate prediction of BCLC stages can significantly ease the workload on radiologists. However, few datasets are explicitly designed for discerning BCLC stages. Despite the common practice of appending BCLC labels to clinical data within datasets, the inherent imbalance in BCLC distribution is further amplified by the diverse purposes for which datasets are curated. In this study, we aim to develop a BCLC staging system using the advanced Swin Transformer model. Additionally, we explore the integration of two datasets, each originally intended for separate objectives, highlighting the critical challenge of preserving class distribution in practical study designs. This exploration is pivotal for ensuring the applicability of our developed staging system in the designed clinical settings. Our resulting BCLC staging system demonstrates an accuracy of 55.81% (±7.8%), contributing to advancing medical image-based research for predicting BCLC stages. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep learning has revolutionized medical imaging, offering advanced methods for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. The BCLC staging system is crucial for staging Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), a high-mortality cancer. An automated BCLC staging system could significantly enhance diagnosis and treatment planning efficiency. However, we found that BCLC staging, which is directly related to the size and number of liver tumors, aligns well with the principles of the Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) framework. To effectively achieve this, we proposed a new preprocessing technique called Masked Cropping and Padding(MCP), which addresses the variability in liver volumes and ensures consistent input sizes. This technique preserves the structural integrity of the liver, facilitating more effective learning. Furthermore, we introduced Re ViT, a novel hybrid model that integrates the local feature extraction capabilities of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with the global context modeling of Vision Transformers (ViTs). Re ViT leverages the strengths of both architectures within the MIL framework, enabling a robust and accurate approach for BCLC staging. We will further explore the trade-off between performance and interpretability by employing TopK Pooling strategies, as our model focuses on the most informative instances within each bag. © 2024 IEEE.

Combinatorial optimization problems are ubiquitous in various disciplines and applications. Many heuristic algorithms have been devoted to solve these types of problems. In order to increase the efficiency for finding the optimal solutions, an application–specific hardware, called digital annealer (DA) has been developed for solving combinatorial optimization problems using quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) formulations. In this study, we formulated the number partitioning problem and the graph partitioning problem into QUBO forms and solved such problems with the DA developed by Fujitsu Ltd. The QUBO formulation of the number partitioning problem was fully connected. The DA found the overall runtime for the optimal solution to be less than 30 seconds for 6500 binary variables. For the graph partitioning problem, we adopted modularity as the metric for determining the quality of the partitions. For Zachary’s Karate Club graph, the modularity obtained was 0.445, a 6% increase against D–wave Quantum Annealer and Simulated Annealing. Moreover, to explore the DA’s potential applications to real–world problems, we used the search for communities or virtual microgrids in a power distribution network as an example. The problem was formulated into graph partitioning. It is shown that the DA effectively identified community structures in the IEEE 33–bus and IEEE 118–bus network. © 2023, CC BY.

Bayesian Parameter Inference for Partially Observed SDEs driven by Fractional Brownian Motion

In this paper we consider Bayesian parameter inference for partially observed fractional Brownian motion (fBM) models. The approach we follow is to time-discretize the hidden process and then to design Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms to sample from the posterior density on the parameters given data. We rely on a novel representation of the time discretization, which seeks to sample from an approximation of the posterior and then corrects via importance sampling;the approximation reduces the time (in terms of total observation time T) by O(T). This method is extended by using a multilevel MCMC method which can reduce the computational cost to achieve a given mean square error (MSE) versus using a single time discretization.
